The FBS application and The Master Plan…two things that go great together

Georgia State fans got two pieces of good news on Friday:

1. GSU mailed to the NCAA its application to reclassify from FCS to FBS. (The packet is thinner than a mortgage application and, after reading it, not nearly as convoluted).

2. GSU hopes to post on its website next week its master plan for athletics facilities. More on that below.

The FBS packet includes the invitation from the Sun Belt Conference, which GSU hopes to join next year, the actual application, a copy of the strategic plan, the strategic plan checklist responses, the diversity strategic plan, and a check for $5,000, which is required by the NCAA. Its dry reading.

An NCAA reclassification committee will meet in July to review the application. Georgia State hopes to receive approval by the end of July. Once it is approved, a conference call will be set up in which the NCAA will go over FBS orientation, which will explain the differences in rules and regulations between FCS and FBS. That’s also when GSU should learn when the scholarship increases for football will go into effect.

Perhaps the most interesting items in the packet are the projected recruiting budgets, revenues and expenses for the next three years.

Highlighting the revenue sports:

  • Football’s recruiting budget is projected to increase from $140,000 in 2012-13 to $160,000 by 2014-15.
  • Men’s basketball’s recruiting budget is projected to increase from $75,000 to $79,000 during the same span.
  • Women’s basketball’s recruiting budget will increase from $69,000 to $73,000.

As for revenues and expenses:

  • Georgia State projects revenues to increase from $25.1 million in 2012-13 to $29.4 million by 2014-15. Most of the increase will be funded by what Georgia State expects will be more NCAA money ($500,000 to $1.1 million) and game guarantees ($500,000 to $1.76 million).
  • Expenses are projected to increase from $25.1 million to $28 million during that same three-year span. The increases are mostly pushed by scholarships ($5.3 million to $6.5 million).

So, it appears that Georgia State projects that will lose a few thousand in the 2012-13 (which is before they began to realize more NCAA money from the Sun Belt), and will make $1.3 million by 2014-15.

Now, onto the master plan, something many of you have asked me about quite often during the past year.

Georgia State hopes to put the presentation on its website next week. It won’t include how much money the new facilities will cost because they reason that posting something in today’s dollars may not be accurate by the time construction is finished. But they do hope that by making this available to the public, it will begin the process of marketing which will lead to the possibility of increased donations (which have grown by $2.4 million since the 2009 fiscal year) and naming-rights opportunities.

The plan will include the renovation for the Sports Arena, the volleyball complex, a baseball stadium, a softball stadium and a soccer arena. You will be to view the plan in total, or separately by project. I haven’t seen it yet. I saw hard copies last year, but I’m guessing they have changed.

It’s wrong to assume that there will be a new Panthersville, the site where baseball, softball and soccer currently play. Depending upon land availability and price, it’s reasonable to assume that some of these pieces will be broken up. It will take around 15 acres to build everything.

I’m sure many of you have questions. Please post them below and I’ll try to answer.

Figured this would have been sent out weeks ago. Glad it’s done now let’s see how many additional scholarships we can add.

Question 1: GSU is searching for land. Finding the right spot at the right price is key.
Question 2: I don’t know. I assume that it will.
Question 3. The packet didn’t have to be sent until today. I don’t understand the angst.

Some panther “fans” have it in for CL. Many an unhappy fan when it would be far easier to be happy about how far the athletic program has come in the 6 years. Some people will always be malcontents.

If GSU had the 12 acres for an on-campus stadium, they’d probably build dorms there instead. The land would be too valuable for a building used only 7 times a year at most. I don’t see an on-campus stadium for GSU for a very long time if ever. If GSU wants their own stadium, they’d have to build another campus in the suburbs.

The old Braves / Falcons Stadium site and surrounding parking lots could be used – have the Braves build some parking decks for more parking to offset the loss of the parking space.

The reason that site is not considered for the new “Blank Dome” is supposed to be an agreement with the neighborhood to not build another stadium there. A new Panthersville there would be better for the area than the way it is being used now, and might bring more opportunites for businesses in the area to serve students (with money).

What about the old hotel building at 70 Dobbs Ave – possible dorm ?

Well I sure like the direction GSU is headed. $$$ will dictate how much and how fast this is completed. I was surprised about the low figure for football recruiting. But I must admit I have nothing to compare it to. It may very well be in line with other start up Div 1 programs. Doug, do you have info on this topic?

GSUAlumBaseball81…………….sports don’t make your Diploma more valuable. Sports tend to find and admit lesser qualified students and that is not a PLUS. The teachers and the research grants are what make your diploma more valuable. Please tell me you don’t think a Tech or Stanford Diploma are more valuable to the holder because of any sports the college plays.

Sports ultimately lead to more alumni donations, which fund some university programs and capital purchases. Not to mention that some students won’t even consider attending a university without certain sports teams. Sports add to the overall brand value of universities, and the more that students and alumni identify with the school, the more they’re likely to support the school financially and hire people that graduated from their alma mater. Follow the money.

@A person SMART enough to know……

Athletics obviously doesn’t make up for weak academics. But GSU doesn’t have weak academics. What athletics can do is give much larger presence in the publics eyes. While GSU competes academically, a lot of people only know schools with FBS football. Some of GSU’s degrees rank higher than UGA’s, but would anyone know it? I know people who go to Tech for degrees which GSU ranks higher in (non engineering degrees). Why would you go to a lower ranked degree program when a higher ranked one is literally minutes down the street? The answer is that Tech has a much higher profile, and that is strongly due to the athletics program.

A person SMART enough to know......

May 29th, 2012
5:45 pm

panther………Tech is KNOW WORLD WIDE and not because of anything remotely having to do with Athletic teams. People pick Tech because GaState is still viewed as a non-traditional student commuter college and FBS Sports will not change the image.

A person SMART enough to know......

panther……and in case you don’t know TECH can’t fill Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field because the STUDENTS don’t fill the student section. Your reasoning is Flawed. UGa is having issues with students going to games as well. Harvard, MIT, & Cal Poly don’t play Big Time FOOTBALL and it doesn’t hurt their enrollment or image. West Virginia plays FBS football but their academics SUCK and football doesn’t make that Diploma more valuable than a Ga State.

A successful athletic program does increase national awareness… see National Champions Auburn & Alabama. Although it’s not the single defining factor, athletics does play a huge role in a school’s national recognition. You would be silly to think otherwise. Applications to GSU increased dramatically when we started playing football.

Anyone that says that athletics doesn’t facilitate the academics, AND money, AND research doesn’t have a clue why the administration of the university is pursuing all these actions. It seems that “a person smart enough to know” – don’t know nothing. I teach at GSU and grad students always tell me that they give to their undergrad schools because of the sports identity as a major factor!

@ an idiot Dumb enough to know….. Two words…Auburn University. Ever been there? It’s in a cow pasture and used to be called Alabama A&M. Without football no one world be able to tell the difference between it and say Shorter University.

Alum and you think playing football is going to make Ga State AUBURN?
How many Dorms rooms does GSU have? Where is Fraternity/ Sorority Row located?
Football is going to Change the non-traditional student commuter college image?

Alums giving more money is to support the SPORTS teams and not the Academic side. you morons sound like Special Education Conference fans. COLLEGE is about Academics not sports. The VALUE of your Diploma increases with BETTER teachers, research grants, and smarter students. NOT FOOTBALL.

Alum,

Compared to Atlanta (Ghettoville), Auburn is a cow pasture. The murder and on-campus robbery rates are lower, too.

Alabama A&M is a different school located in Montgomery. Auburn was API (Alabama Polytechnic Institute) before changing to Auburn.

@ “A person SMART enough to know…” OK – there are two options at this point about you. Either you are just ignorant or just a hater because all the data collected over the last two decades says that you are wrong about the importance of athletics to the exposure of universities. I suspect that you are just some hater because you can not be so stupid to think that they are following this plan just to play football.

A person SMART enough to know......

May 30th, 2012
12:15 pm

Atl Mafia…..”two Options”?

Don’t you meant OPINIONS? You TEACH at GaState?

Football doesn’t generate that much money for the COLLEGE. It generates money for more sports that LOSE money. HOW MANY BIG CITY college have Football? Of the Big Cities that do how many play Big Time football? Now, of those how many were there and the City was built around the college and not the other way around?

Kennesaw State has a better situation to Start football and have it HELP grow the school than GSU.
The original point was that Football will make a GSU Diploma more Valuable in the future. That is not true. Sports add some value but the Universities rankings in the the Degrees offered is where EDUCATIONAL VALUE is found in your DIPLOMA.

EXPOSURE can be good and BAD. In case you haven’t seen the Sports page it is full of PLAYERS in serous trouble. Is that the Type of EXPOSURE you want and think will make your Diploma more Valuable?

A person smart enough to know: GSU has housing for 4k students not to mention there are dozens of apt complexes and condos with a 10 min walk of campus. And Fraternity row is on Edgewood and Piedmont. Learn something about a university before you criticize it.
