    1. Costs

      • LEDs and CF lightbulbs cost more to purchase than traditional incandescent bulbs, but these costs are recovered over the life of the bulb. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can lower the energy used in your home for lighting by up to 75 percent by using these new technologies.

      Function

      • LEDs consume at least 1/3 of the energy that CF lightbulbs require. LEDs and CF lightbulbs also give off less heat, which reduces the amount of money you spend cooling your home.

      Lifespan

      • CF lights can last up to 10 times as long as traditional incandescent bulbs. LED lights can last up to 10 times as long as CF lights. Both types of lightbulbs cut down on replacement costs and maintenance.

      Color

      • LED lights are as effective as CF bulbs at producing any color except white. LEDs produce a cooler white than the warm white produced by CF bulbs and incandescent bulbs.

      Enviromental Concerns

      • CF bulbs contain mercury, which is toxic; they cannot be thrown out with regular garbage because the mercury will be released if the bulb breaks. LEDs do not pose this danger.
