News are ongoing...

The Special Reserve of Andranomena is in the Southwest. Among the endemic species sheltered by its forest, we can see Pyxis planicauda turtle, classified vulnerable and in danger of disappearance. Its center is located at 20°10 Sud and 44°3East.

The Special Reserve of Andranomena covers 6 420 ha and is located in the Region Menabe, 30 km north of the town of Morondava. The average temperature is around 25°C. The vegetation is composed of dense dry deciduous forest of the West with 3 remarkable species of baobab tree. It shelters a large number of endemic species of local, regional and national fauna.

The fauna

11 species of reptiles and a species of amphibian have been counted in Andranomena. 48 species of birds, 10 species of mammals and 7 species of lemurs also live in the Reserve. Among these lemurs, 7 species of them are diurnal and five nocturnal. Three (3) of them are classified by the International Union for the Conservation of the Nature (IUCN) as rare species and two (2) as vulnerable species.

The best fauna of Andranomena

1. Propithecus verreauxi, more commonly known as Sifaka, an endemic lemur. This lemur can be easily seen between 7 and 9 a.m when it is very active but can be observed throughout the day.

2. Lepilemur ruficaudatus or Boenga, a dark redhead fur lemur. It is nocturnal and can only be seen when the sun goes down.

3. Phaner pallescens or Tanta as its local name, is a lemur that fur is redish grey. Its back is ornate with a black strip, as well as its eyes. Nocturnal, it only appears after 6 p.m.

4. Microcebus sp or Tilitilivahy is a small lemur that is only visible after 6 p.m.

The flora

Some species of the family of Burseraceaes, Euphorbiaceaes and Bombacaceaes dominate the Special Reserve of Andranomena. Burseraceaes are represented by the Malagasy endemic species of the Commiphora kind. The Euphorbia antso species represents 63.3% of the families of the Euphorbiaceaes. The majority of the species of the family of Bombacaceae is constituted by the species of Adansonia fony.

Travel shrewd...

For a comfortable stay in Andranomena, it is preferable to protect yourselves from the the very generous sun in this region! Have good walking shoes, light dresses, packs of mineral water and a raincoat for your crossing the sea. Prefer cold meals.

The nearest banks are in Morondava. Belos sur Mer, Ambararata and Morondava, have a center of health. Andranomena is covered by the telephone networks of Telma, Zain and Orange. The Reserve is contactable by BLU.

Andranomena spreads on a little flat land. Its particularity in the Network of Madagascar National Parks is the meaningful representativeness of the biodiversity of the Menabe. The biodiversity is precious because it is threatened and endangered. The flora there is endemic to more than 80%.

The reserve shelters several Malagasy endemic species, typical of dense dry  decidious forest . Three varieties of baobabs, Adansonia fony, and Adansonia grandidieri, as well as the species of Commiphora are concentrated in the reserves. As for fauna, two species of animals are endemic to the region: Hypogeomys antimena and the turtle Pyxis planicauda that are both endangered species.

A threatened endemic biodiversity

The human activities generally have the most threatening for the reserve of Andranomena. It is very often victim of illicit cut of precious wood, fires, poaching, raving of herd of cattles and the collection of its secondary products.

Several species at risk are then in danger, besides they are the priorities in the conservation of the Special Reserve of Andranomena. As for the fauna, there are the local endemic terrestrial flat-tailed turtle, Pyxis planicauda and the carnivorous Mungotictis decemlineata decemlineata, the habitats of which are very reduced; the jumping rat Hypogeomys antimena that is ion its way to disappearance. The threatened lemurs due to poaching are highly supervised; they are verreauxi verreauxi, Eulemur fulvus rufus and Lepilemur ruficaudatus.
The conservation of the caducifolious dense dry forest and the temporary lakes is privileged also. This forest and these lakes are precious habitats for the biodiversity. The lakes that dry up during dry seasons shelter the aquatic birds, endemic to Madagascar or the Menabe. Among the plant species victims of a wild exploitation, there are Commiphora guillaumini, Hazomalania voyroni, Cedrelopsis grevei, and Securinega seyrigii.

Several generating activities of incomes have been created to limit the recourse of the villagers to the forest resources and to attenuate the pressures on the Reserve. Raising of ducks, culture of pea of the cape, beans, yam and peanut, establishment of nurseries of autochthonous trees and fruit trees are part of the projects achieved with and for the population.
