BOSTON — A federal judge has ordered the brother-in-law of U.S. Rep. John Tierney to forfeit $7.7 million in assets for his role in an illegal offshore sports betting scheme that also involved the Democrat's wife.
The Boston Globe (http://b.globe.com/LINrUA ) reports that U.S. District Court Judge Patti Saris wrote in a ruling filed Monday that 62-year-old Daniel Eremian of Boca Raton, Fla., must forfeit the money because of his actions on behalf of Sports Offshore, the Antigua-based gambling website that authorities say he operated with his brother, Robert.
Robert Eremian was also charged in the scheme but remains a fugitive.
A lawyer for Daniel Eremian did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
He and another man were convicted in December of racketeering and other charges, but were acquitted of multiple counts of money laundering.
