Spain Overview

Spain is colorful and playful, austere and refined. It is a place where medieval Moorish arches in Andalucía collide with wild Modernista spires in Cataluña, where classical royal paintings inspire flights of imagination by abstract artists, and where Celtic rock overlays flamenco beats. Three decades after the death of Franco and the country’s rebirth as a liberated and politically significant player, Spain is still riding out its cultural and economic renaissance with style and flair. Today, whether travelers are making their pilgrimage to the cathedrals of León or to the pulsing nightlife of Madrid, they are bound to meet their fair share of hippies, nuns, shepherds, and mullet-sporting youth; speakers of Catalan, Gallego, and Basque; recent immigrants and seasoned expatriates; and all those in between. Blessed with cultural vitality and enviable geographic diversity, Spain is a land for the old, the young, and the truly young at heart.
