Today NBC News reported that a Salvador Dali painting worth $150,000 was stolen on Tuesday night from Venus Over Manhattan gallery on Madison Avenue in New York. Founded by collector and art writer Adam Lindemann, the gallery just opened this past May.

The 1949 painting, called "Cartel des Don Juan Tenorio," is far more free-flowing than Dali's usual style. With wiggly lines and rich washes of color Dali portrays a skull on a platter, surrounded by black blood and ants. It was part of the inaugural exhibition "A Rebours," depicting strange objects 19th century to present day exploring the notion of being "against the grain." We clearly don't know who was behind the caper, but we are very suspicious of whomever was second in line to buy Dali's bronze horse that sold for $450,000 on Tuesday.

According to the police report, surveillance cameras show "a man wearing a dark shirt with white polka dots enter the gallery with a black cloth bag." (Of course a Dali thief is wearing polka dots.) "He is later seen on cameras leaving the gallery with the painting." If you know anything about the theft, please contact the police. Bring Dali home!
