1851 - On this day in 1851, a tall, older, black woman stood and asked to speak to an important gathering in Akron. But the topic on the former slave's mind wasn't abolition. Sojourner Truth stirred the audience at the second Woman's Rights Convention as she compared her physical and mental attributes to those of a man. None could argue when she recounted the work she did as a slave, and, according to lore, reinforced her experiences by repeating, " . . . and ain't I a woman?"
