Jeff R. Tucker, or "Tucker" to those who know him, is the CEO and founder of Global Sports Xtreme (GSX CrossFit) in Fort Worth, Texas, and he has a passion for teaching gymnastics, tumbling and gymnastics strength theory.

At the CrossFit Gymnastics Trainer Course, Coach Tucker or one of his Tier One coaches will delve into basic, intermediate and advanced gymnastics forms in a lecture setting followed by practical application. Skills will be repeated until the student has a full grasp and understanding of how to learn, spot and teach instructed methods safely. Instruction will include how to scale and spot all demonstrated movements for beginners and accomplished athletes.

This is a 2-day interactive course with Q-and-A-style lecture and video presentations, where you and coaches will perform all movements. You will learn how to combine applied forms with gymnastics applications toward basic and advanced static forms. You will develop confidence in the forms and learn to push such fundamentals for personal achievement, as well as how to program such moves for the CrossFit methodology and WODs within CrossFit boxes. Repeated progressions performed by each student will allow you to gain body-weight control and begin your path in gymnastics movement.

Our goal in this course is to aid CrossFitters in using gymnastics for strength development, core control, spatial awareness and WOD progressions. The desired result is that the CrossFit community will become more engaged in using one of the foundational blocks for CrossFit workouts: gymnastics. Handouts and other material will be e-mailed to you prior to the course date.

You will be taught a wide variety of foundational movements and techniques, including these and others:

  • Basic strength: development for disadvantaged leverage and basic strength prowess for gymnastics movement.
  • Parallette work: handstands, L-sits, stretching, core control, handstand push-ups, scalability of basic and intermediate movements, spotting, range-of-motion/extreme range of motion training.
  • Rings: core-training exercises, support work, proper hand placement, L-sits, iron-cross progressions, dislocates, presses, muscle-ups and muscle-up drills, self-spotting techniques, kips, handstands, and conditioning.
  • Bar variations: handstands, back levers, skin the cats, L-sit pull-up variations, stretching, kipping swings, spotting techniques, bar muscle-ups, scalability of all movements.
  • Handstands: handstand push-ups, handstand forward rolls, balance work, presses to handstands, L-sits to handstands. You will be taught how to spot and scale these foundational elements for WODs and newbies, and you will learn hand placement, core control, strength development, planches (progressions on floor, rings and paralettes).

You only need to bring athletic attire and an adventurous attitude! We look forward to teaching all comers of all skill levels how these foundational gymnastic elements will increase your strength, flexibility and understanding of how gymnastics programming is part of Greg Glassman's vision.

CrossFit Gymnastics Advanced Trainer Course

This is an extension of the CrossFit Gymnastics Trainer Course that bridges the gap from training to sport. It is grounded in prerequisite strength, safe coaching and technique to produce powerful movement and efficiency in skill work. Attendees are given a global understanding of human movement based in the advanced application of gymnastics training, not only in other areas of CrossFit training but also in human movement in sport and in life.

The GSX facility (located in Fort Worth, Texas) features a wide array of equipment and the required safety nets for training the advanced movements requested by the CrossFit community: in-ground trampolines, overhead suspension gear, ring trainers, matting, ropes, spring floors, rod floors, a tumbling pit, an air track, and indoor and outdoor CrossFit training facilities. The now-legendary Hell's Half Acre will allow for both indoor and outdoor CrossFit activities.

Staff will include USGA coaches, acrobatic specialists and award-winning gymnastic coaches who have competed within the NCAA/USA/British National Teams in the sport of gymnastics. The coaching ratio will be 5:1, giving athletes a chance for a great deal of personal instruction.

This course has been custom developed to allow you to learn the following:

  • Acrobatic skills: spatial awareness, body control with dynamic movements.
  • Strap work: this is a silk style acrobatic work.
  • Balance work: planche, hand balancing, stunting, walking on hands.
  • Mushroom work: bucket work and mushroom progressions.
  • Tumbling: basic forward rolls to front flips, back flips, back handsprings.
  • Trampoline work: fun stuff!
  • Gymnastics ring work: performed on a set of USGA rings.
  • Bar variations: bar muscle-ups, kipping work, pull-overs.
  • Gymnastic pit work: tumbling into the pit, front punches and double front flips (mini-tramp).

Whether you are a novice or accomplished CrossFit athlete, our coaching staff will teach you the necessary skills and drills for applying gymnastics elements to your own workouts and personal goals, but you will also walk away with the knowledge needed to be a better coach. Lectures will cover our current curriculum, with practical sessions as a complement.

All the GSX coaches and head coach Jeff Tucker himself wish to offer you a true Texas welcome as they host a complimentary Saturday-night cowboy brisket and barbecue with all the fixin's!

Prerequisites: You must have completed the CrossFit Level 1 Trainer Course and the CrossFit Gymnastics Trainer Course.

CrossFit Kettlebell Trainers Course

Developed by Jeff Martone, owner of Tactical Athlete Training Systems. Jeff was one of the first certified senior kettlebell instructors in the United States. Jeff has achieved the rank of CMS (Candidate Master of Sports) in Kettlebell Sport, and is the North American record holder in the Long Cycle event. He is best known as the creator of "Hand-to-Hand" Kettlebell Juggling, SHOT training, and the T.A.P.S. pull-up system. He is also the author of seven training DVDs and best selling book Kettlebell Rx. He was the first to implement kettlebell training in a federal law enforcement agency and has offered instructor-level certifications since 2004. He has over 20 years of experience as a defensive tactics, firearms, and special response-team instructor.

#9: What happens if I fail the performance test?
The student is graded on a pass/fail basis on their ability to correctly perform the physical techniques. The demonstrated techniques are done at the appropriate speed and amount of weight with the emphasis on precise form. This evaluation is conducted on the last day of the course. Students will test one at a time or as a group and will perform the exercises called out by the instructor.
If a student fails to perform an exercise to standard, the instructor will note it and continue the evaluation. At the end of the evaluation, the student will be informed on which exercise(s) failed to meet the standard. If time allows, the instructor may offer remedial training, and the student may receive the opportunity to retest. The retest consists of only the exercises that were identified, not the entire list of exercises. If the student corrects the technical deficiencies, then he will receive a passing score. If he fails the retest, he will not receive an Instructor Certificate.

#10: What happens if I fail to meet the standard during the retest?
You will be required to submit a videotape of yourself correctly demonstrating the identified techniques within two months after the date of your Course. Upon review of the video, the Chief Instructors will either issue your Instructor Course certificate or suggest that you to retake the course.

#11: When will I receive my certificate?
You will receive your certificate at the completion of the seminar.

Striking

CrossFit Striking Trainer Course
Graham CrossFit
Puyallup, WA

Fighters are some of the most well-conditioned and powerful athletes in the world. This is due, in part, to their striking training since punching and kicking with true power, speed and accuracy requires people to utilize their entire body from the ground up. As a consequence, striking is one of the most rudimentary and functional movements that involve the core.

Developed by Martial Arts Masters Hall-of-Fame inductee and SWAT team member, George Ryan, CrossFit Striking is designed to take both the skills and the benefits from a fighter's striking training program and integrate them into CrossFit workouts. It is a program that is grounded in success since it has grown out of George's system of striking and self-protection that he has been teaching to tactical operators and law enforcement personnel around the country for over twelve years.

After becoming CrossFit Level 1 and Kettlebell Level 1 Certified, George saw that adding striking techniques to CrossFit workouts is a natural fit - not only for tactical operators and law enforcement personnel training in CrossFit, but for all athletes as well. This is because striking workouts can provide all athletes with four major benefits:

  1. You can achieve a fighter's fitness level
  2. You can increase your core strength, rotational speed and power
  3. You can develop a sport specific movement and
  4. You can learn a real self-protection skill-set.
These benefits can make striking a valuable addition to every person's CrossFit program.

With this in mind, the CrossFit Striking Trainer Course is designed to give participants the essential skills that will allow them to instruct athletes in the basic striking concepts of mixed martial arts, boxing and self-protection. Participants will be taught how to incorporate striking drills into CrossFit workouts so that overall fitness, core strength, rotational speed and power can be increased. In addition, the CrossFit Striking Trainer Course will teach participants to:

  • Achieve a fighter's fitness level
  • Add variety to CrossFit workouts
  • Be able to throw proper strikes and combinations, i.e. punch & kick
  • Understand the role of the kinetic chain and the posterior chain that support athletic performance and fighting
  • Increase the speed and power of strikes, regardless of experience
  • Be able to teach proper striking mechanics to clients
  • Safely run a training session involving striking skills and drills
  • Teach an essential self-protection skill-set to athletes
  • Effectively use shadow boxing, focus mitts and a heavy bag

Strongman

strongman.jpg

CrossFit Strongman is the integration of strongman movements and energy systems into the constantly varied CrossFit model. Think of it as "old-school movements with new-school programming."

The typical strongman competition consists of five events in one day. Each event is less than 60 seconds, so athletes never tap into anything but the ATP/CP system. Consider what would happen if you trained yourself to have that kind of output during a longer workout like, for example, a seven-minute AMRAP of farmer's carries mixed with gymnastics. This is a perfect expression of old movements implemented with new programming, and the results are staggering.

We believe CrossFit Strongman is the best - and most fun - way to increase strength while still increasing work capacity across broad time and modal domains. In CrossFit, we want a stimulus that is constantly varied so we never stop progressing in our fitness. Strongman movements provide plenty of variation in a toy-filled playground where athletes can test and improve their brute strength and overall fitness level.

Because of the often-awkward size, shape and consistency of the objects we use in strongman, the lifts tend to have less efficiency than those done with a barbell. Case in point: a water-filled keg. This represents a dynamic load that challenges the neuromuscular system in a way a barbell can't. For this reason, as athletes, we need to develop efficient movement patterns with inefficient loads. That response is at the heart of being a great athlete, and it also applies to the real world, where few objects have handles and perfect balance.

In this one-day seminar, athletes are presented with a constantly changing field of play, and a better athlete will learn to make quicker adjustments and respond more favorably to an unfavorable stimuli.

Why CrossFitters Should Do CrossFit Strongman
  • CrossFit Strongman increases real-world strength, because in daily life we are required to move odd objects such as a grocery bag or a child as efficiently as possible. Barbells exist only in a gym setting.
  • These movements are great for posterior-chain development, a necessity for someone striving to become a good CrossFitter.
  • CrossFit Strongman programming provides CrossFitters with a variety of different stimuli, all aimed at achieving an increase in work capacity - which translates to an increase in your CrossFit ability.
  • CrossFit Strongman, like CrossFit itself, simultaneously integrates metabolic conditioning and strength training.
  • CrossFit movements are designed to move "large loads long distances quickly." Those words are drilled into the mind of anyone who's ever attended a Level 1 Trainer Course. There is no better expression of that key CrossFit principle than moving a yoke that is three times your body weight across a football field in 30 seconds. How about carrying 1.25 times body weight in each hand the same distance in less than 30 seconds or flipping a 700-lb. tire for max reps in 60 seconds? They all equate to large loads moved long distances very quickly.
Scalable? Infinitely.

One of the misconceptions about strongman is that you have to look like a behemoth to take part in the action. Nothing could be further from the truth. At the CrossFit Strongman Seminar, we will illustrate just how scalable these movements are and how quickly they can be adopted into almost any program. These movements are open to people of all abilities, genders and strength levels.

Goals
  • To teach you safe, proper and efficient movement using these objects.
  • To teach you how to coach these movements.
  • To introduce you to the CrossFit Strongman training methodology and programming.

Rob Orlando has been an amateur strongman competitor since 2005. Over the last six years he has participated in more than 15 contests and set North American records in multiple lifts. He began CrossFitting in 2008, just a few months prior to the CrossFit Games regional qualifier in Albany, NY, where he took fifth place. He competed in the CrossFit Games in 2009 and 2010 and finished 22d and 15th, respectively. Over the past three years, he has launched Hybrid Athletics, a CrossFit affiliate in Stamford, CT, started Strongmanwod.com, and created a line of strongman products including yokes, axles, atlas-stone molds, farmer's handles, and logs. His goal is to introduce the CrossFit community to strongman movements and implements through this seminar.
