Under Siege: A Syrian Diary

I am a video journalist by default.

I had never carried a camera before. I had used my mobile camera earlier only to take photos of my friends and family during special occasions.

But now, during the revolution, we carry cameras to film for the world what is happening in our country and to show them how the innocent are punished and the criminals get away with impunity.

But for activists, the camera is a double-edged sword.

Many of my friends were arrested for protesting. However they weren’t arrested from the protest sites, but rather from the checkpoints spread across the city.

The picture above is of Bluestone restaurant, once considered one of the trendiest eateries in Homs.

Named after Homs’ volcanic stones, the restaurant is located in Bustan al-Diwan (Orchard Court) neighbourhood within the Old Homs district.

Like several other neighbourhoods within Old Homs, Bustan al-Diwan was home to many historical characters. Their houses are now archaeological sites. On some of the walls there, inscriptions in ancient languages, including in Roman, could be found. (Read More...)

My flatmates and I have been waiting for the morning light so that we can go up to the roof and begin installing the Satellite Internet device that we received last night.

We have been cut off from the outside world for four consecutive days because of a missile that targeted our previous device.

In most Homs neighbourhoods, the internet is cut. In the rebellious districts, there is not even telephone service, whether mobile or fixed, for most of the time. (Read More...)

As usual, the sounds of shelling woke me up this morning. I could not sleep for more than four hours in a row during the last 10 days because the shelling on my neighbourhood did not stop. Well, sometimes it could stop for two hours and, in the best case, it may stop for three hours.

Today, the shelling began at 7:10 am. Despite the fact that the shelling on our neighbourhood started in early March, our ears did not get used to the roar of the rocket missiles. The rocket, just before it falls, makes a whistling sound that is very scary. (Read More...)
