Famous Leonardo self portrait in critical condition

ROME (Reuters) - Leonardo da Vinci is sick and no one really knows if he ever will be able to receive visitors again.

Art conservation and restoration experts recently concluded weeks of tests on the famous self portrait of one of history's greatest geniuses, sketched in the early 1500s when he was in his 60s.

And the diagnosis is decidedly grim.

The non-invasive studies confirmed art experts' worst fears: the drawing is seriously damaged and deteriorating and any restoration would be delicate and risky to say the least.

"I think we need to think very hard before we do anything to this very familiar face," said Jane Roberts, Royal Librarian and Curator of the Print Room at Windsor Castle.

"But we can tell quite a lot more about it by continuing to ask questions," she told a news conference in Rome.

The small drawing of the Renaissance master, which measures 33.5 by 21.6 centimeters (13.2 by 8.5 inches), shows Leonardo with pensive, baggy eyes, bushy eyebrows and a flowing beard.

The self portrait, done with red chalk on paper, is suffering from what the art restoration world calls "foxing," a generic term for blotches, spots and stains -- marks that should not be there.

Foxing can be caused by oxidation of the pigmentation Leonardo used as well as fungi on the paper, made of hemp, flax and wool, or rust from the iron in the pigments.

Leonardo's forehead, aquiline nose and puffy cheeks look like he has a bad case of the measles.

"Because this is a masterpiece, prudence has prevailed," said Maria Cristina Misiti, head of Italy's Central Institute for Restoration and Conservation of Archival and Book Patrimony.

"It scary to deal with a work of art of this magnitude and uniqueness," she said.

The decision on whether to restore the drawing would be a difficult one to make, and would be taken by the Royal Library of Turin, the restoration institute, and scientists, she said.

The drawing was acquired by King Carlo Alberto of Savoy in 1839 and was well preserved in the Royal Library for nearly 100 years. But in 1929 it was framed and put on a wall, exposing it to sunlight.

"We will continue to study it, to diagnose it. Everyone agrees on that," Misiti said.

The drawing, which is kept in a vault in Turin, was shown in an extremely rare exhibit for two months last year in connection with celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy.

But art experts say that any other exhibition would be for short periods of time and with a limited number of visitors, because, like any sick old man, Leonardo will need what art experts call "long periods of rest".

Best to protect the piece for future generations of artists, scholars and those who appreciate art. Hopefully restoration technologies will catch up before it's lost.

interesting too all the efforts and care put into saving a drawing Leonardo himself would likely not considered worth saving. if he cared that his likeness would survive why did he not do a frescoed self-portrait or a silver point drawing in one of his many sketchbooks or even an oil paintiing. no instead we get a chalk drawing, a sketch that is impermanent to say the least and as evidenced by all the "conservation" necessary to a man long dust.

A time to live and let live; a time to die or let die. Like aromatic blossoms, our works will soon be forgotten. Only the soul lives forever.

Can't they simply seal it in an air-tight container to prevent further degradation?

Sad to hear that such a great work of art is in such fragile condition. Hopefully they will be able to restore it.

        Use Photoshop. No problem.

A genius is a genius of a renaissance, or a renaissance genius. To acknowledge a genius is to acknowledge the renaissance. The two are one of the same.
      • Julian 2 days 10 hrs ago
Uh, Kenneth, you kind of lost me there. Did you actually say anything? Perhaps a renaissance requires some presence of genius, but a genius or genii certainly require no ongoing period of enlightenment, nor do they necessarily cause same.

A man that's intellect will never be matched. Painter, botanist, architect, musician, inventor, mathematician, engineer, scientist, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, sculptor, and writer.

It's a shame that his self-portrait is fading, but Leonardo's genius will never fade away.

Like the man said , glass case filled with inert gas out of the light. Maybe freeze the deterioration and wait 200 years to see what they can do then that cannot be done now.
      • Jonny 2 days 11 hrs ago
I'm sure the experts have already thought of that option and probably many more.

I doubt it.It's too simple for the self important.

Yes you could make a copy of it and show it but that's NOT the point, this great piece of work was not just done by anyone, it was done by one of the GREATEST Masters in man's history. While it might come down to showing a copy ultimately, all steps should be taken to try to keep the original from being destroyed as long as possible because you just don't get the same appreciation for the artwork if it is just a copy. I can't only imagine the love and care this great man took in creating his self portrait and I hope every step can be taken to save this artwork for as long as humanly possible because it was people like Leonardo that kept me from abandoning my own dreams of being an artist.

I agree Blindartist. However, for the sake of preservation, it would be wiser to protect the original and allow people to view a copy (or at least a reproduction by another artist).

The fact that this is not an article about Leonardo DiCaprio upsets me...

Many great works of art are falling apart because of pigment quality or surface and support medium. The paintings on cardboard with oil and/or pastel at the end of the 19th century are a prime example. Da Vinci was also a scientist and would never draw or paint on an inferior material. Someone put it in the sun and the rest is history.

Deep freeze it and put it away. We can all look at pictures on the internet. No need to display it and cause more harm. Wait until we have the tech to restore it without harming it.

Leonardo Da Vinci's drawings are usually created in silver point, and not the sanguine pastel like crayon on this drawing. Da Vinci drew so much and so often he developed carpel tunnel syndrome in his right hand. He then was forced to use left hand to continue drawing. (The self portrait is one of his left hand drawings.)
      • Deeda 2 days 10 hrs ago
Thank you for sharing that info. I didn't know that he was right handed. I wonder at what point in his work did he switch hands. Which works of art and science did he do primarily with his non-dominant hand, I wonder.
      • Shawn S 2 days 9 hrs ago
Leonardo was always left handed. Later in life, possibly the result of a stroke, he lost the function of his right hand/side. This did affect his ability to sketch, but not until later in life. Also, FYI, most scholars don't accept that the work in this article was done by da Vinci. More likely it was made by Salai or Melzi.

All things in life, including art, are impermanent. Enjoy it while it lasts. Leonardo could have told you that.

That was one of the first of several Da Vinci works that they made us "copy" in Art school Life Drawing 101....learned from the Masters.

Do you think they could fit a couple Presidential candidates in one of those vaults in Turin? Both are in dire need of limited exposure to the public. A "long period of rest" is just what Obama needs.
    • Michael  •  2 days 9 hrs ago
Get a digital copy that can be "restored" and then put the original in storage so that art restoration experts in the 22nd century can fix it.

It seems to me that if they stored it an absolute vaccuum with detailed photos for posterity then maybe in 100 years there might be a way to restore it...why not preserve it until it can be retored, whenever that might be.

Rare paper articles recovered from Titanic are sealed in airtight cases to keep oxygen out, and are on display, but out of sunlight in dim lighting, and flash cameras are not allowed, because any bright light would degrade the things. They could do something like that for the portrait, so people could still see it, but without causing any further damage. Pretty dumb to ever have it exposed to sunlight, apparently they never put a piece of news paper on a window sill in sunlight for a long period of time and saw how the material degraded.

      Freeze it in Carbonite!
