About Commissioner Garcia

Buddy Garcia was appointed to the Railroad Commission of Texas by Governor Rick Perry on April 12, 2012. Having devoted his life to state service at an early age, Buddy has worked over 21 consecutive years for the great state of Texas.

Prior to becoming Railroad Commissioner, Garcia served as Commissioner at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality from 2007 – 2012, where he was Chairman for two years. Motivated by producing results for the state, Commissioner Garcia previously served as Texas’ deputy secretary of state and border commerce coordinator. He is a former senior advisor to Governor Perry and legislative director for State Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr.

Garcia serves on the following: the Border Security Council, the Texas Coastal Land Advisory Board, and the Gulf of Mexico Alliance. Garcia is also an ex officio advisory member for the Texas Water Foundation and serves as co-chair for the Blue Ribbon Resilient Communities effort created by America's Energy Coast, an initiative of the America's WETLAND Foundation.

A native of Brownsville, Garcia graduated from St. Joseph Academy and received his B.A. in political science from Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State University. He and his wife live in Austin and have two sons. In his spare time, Garcia enjoys coaching baseball and spending time outdoors with his family.
