Officials praise wrestlers, pass resolution for state champions

April 20, 2011 - It's not very often Oxford's officials are in complete agreement, but they were last week when the township board unanimously approved a resolution honoring the high school varsity wrestling team for winning its first-ever Division I state championship back in February.
"That had to be so sweet," said Supervisor Bill Dunn. "I know what it takes to accomplish what you've done, to beat a powerhouse like (Detroit) Catholic Central."
Oxford's grapplers beat Catholic Central 26-25 to win the championship in what "ranks as one of the most thrilling finishes in Michigan high school state competition history," according to the resolution.
Speaking as an OHS graduate, Clerk Curtis Wright said the victory "put a big shot back in Oxford athletics."
"We haven't had a (state) championship since the football team (in 1992), so I was really ecstatic when I saw that," he said. "It sent shivers down my spine."
"As a former wrestler, I'm very proud of you guys," said Trustee Mike Spisz. "I know what it takes to go through what you guys did. All I can say is great job."
Dunn was particularly proud because it's "always bugged" him that private schools like Catholic Central compete in the "same arena with public schools" because they specifically recruit athletes.
To face what essentially amounts to a stacked deck and come out on top says something special about Oxford.
