Unions display their anti-marriage colors

Prop. 8 legal battleCalifornia unions have combined forces in hopes to overturn Proposition 8.

In November, voters in California passed Prop. 8, which amends the state constitution to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Now many of the state's unions have filed a brief before the California Supreme Court to overturn it. The brief, according to a Pacific Justice Institute press release, claims Prop. 8 "would strip one class of citizens of a fundamental right."

Brad Dacus, founder of the Pacific Justice Institute, notes the unions believe they have the backing to overturn the amendment. "These unions are spending the union dues of countless numbers of union members to oppose this traditional definition [of marriage]," he says.

However, he points out that union members have control of their money, so they can request that their dues go to a charity instead. Dacus believes many have been inspired to do so.

Brad Dacus PJI"Then they can expect union members to drop off like flies and follow their conscience instead of the bullying of their union," he adds.

In filing the brief opposing Prop. 8, Dacus contends union lawyers were going against the majority of rank-and-file members. "The unions have obviously not polled their members to see how they felt about Prop. 8 because if they did, they would find that the average union worker in California is in favor of Proposition 8, not against it," he concludes.

The brief identifies numerous union affiliates as party to the legal matter, including the AFL-CIO, Teamsters, SEIU, Communications Workers of America, United Steel Workers, California Nurses Association, the Screen Actors Guild, and the California and American Federations of Teachers.
