1900 - Irish playwright and novelist Oscar Wilde died, aged 46. He was best-known for writing The Importance Of Being Earnest and The Picture Of Dorian Gray, his only novel.
1940 - Iconic comedy actress Lucille Ball wed her I Love Lucy co-star Desi Arnaz in Greenwich, Connecticut. They divorced 20 years later.
1979 - Pink Floyd released The Wall, a rock-opera concept album, written and sung by Roger Waters. It became one of the best-selling albums ever, with around 30 million copies sold.
1994 - Hip-hop rapper Tupac Shakur was shot five times in the lobby of a Manhattan recording studio in an apparent robbery by two men. He survived the attack, but was shot again in 1996 and died six days later at the age of 25.
Credited as one of the most successful rappers of all time, Tupac was a controversial figure, who was heavily embroiled in a feud between East Coast and West Coast rappers which was believed to be linked to the shootings.
2004 - Gameshow obsessive Ken Jennings finally lost the US quiz Jeopardy, after remaining champion for a record 74 episodes.
He left the show with winnings of more than 2.5 million dollars, the biggest gameshow haul in TV history.
