Teaching Associate in History of Modern Medicine and Biology funded by the Wellcome Trust through a strategic award on Generation to Reproduction

Research interests: The history of medicine & the life sciences generally 1800–present; scientific exploration, expeditions, and extreme environments; Polar expeditions, space travel and mountaineering; the history of physiology; field and laboratory relationships; topics relating to exercise, including sports medicine, sports science, and the Olympics; eugenics; health and lifestyle; public health and social medicine (esp. for the 19thC).

Vanessa has recently published a book on the history of British sports medicine and is currently working on two projects – the use of athletes as experimental objects, and a new project on the history of scientific expeditions and exploration physiology.
