OTHER NEWS:
The Canadian Television Fund has cut $25 million in funding but
Degrassi: The Next Generation has managed to get their funding for
season 3. Read their press release below.  Epitome Pictures has also
wrote a letter to Prime Minister Jean Chretien asking him to find $25
million dollars to give back to compensate the loss in funding.  Many
Canadian TV productions are at loss without this funding.  Based on
this press release, I found Epitome Pictures to be quite arrogant "We
got our funding for our award winning TV program, but you did
not"...Maybe I'm misreading it....Here is the press release below:

Mixed Emotions from Degrassi Producers Call on Prime Minister for
federal legacy gift to assist troubled industry- Wednesday, April 16,
2003

Epitome Pictures Inc. is pleased to announce that its hit series
Degrassi: The Next Generation has received funding from the Canadian
Television Fund, which will assist in the production of 22 new
episodes for broadcast on CTV. "We are ratcheting up the drama for
third season," says Degrassi creator Linda Schuyler, "and the entire
writing team is having a blast developing the new storylines." At the
same time, Schuyler and her partner Stephen Stohn (Executive Producer
of both Degrassi and The Juno Awards) express deep concern about the
funding crisis which looms for other Canadian drama producers. "While
our project is one of the lucky ones to receive funding, there are a
shocking number of other well-deserving projects which did not
receive funding," says Schuyler.

"Excellent projects at CBC and CTV have been particularly decimated,"
says Stohn. "When the Canadian Television Fund introduced its new
rules for priority ranking, it was unaware that $25 million in
federal funding would be withdrawn. The unintended result is the
disqualification of hugely popular series and movies-of-the-week,
mostly at CBC and CTV—the two networks which are by far the leaders
in original Canadian primetime drama." "We believe that Canadian
storytelling is as important to the health of our collective Canadian
soul as medicare is to our bodies."

Schuyler and Stohn make the following call for action: "We ask the
Prime Minister to consider a legacy gift to Canada, by reinstating at
least some of the withdrawn $25 million so that Canadian audiences
can continue to enjoy acclaimed shows such as This Hour Has 22
Minutes, The Red Green Show and The Eleventh Hour, in addition to a
potential slate of CBC and CTV movies of the-week and mini-series
which have traditionally been the highest rated of all drama
productions." Concludes Schuyler, "Such a legacy gift would give time
to the various industry sectors to formulate a coordinated long-term
strategy, addressing not just CTF funding issues but also other
serious problems facing tv drama in general, and primetime dramatic
series in particular." Adds Stohn, "Three studies are already
underway for different government bodies, with the results expected
within the coming months. These can form the cornerstone of the long-
term tv strategy."

Good news for Aussie Degrassi fans!

I have just finished watching "Kiss Me Steph" (Episode
1, season 1 of Degrassi Junior High) on Nickelodeon,
available through Foxtel & Austar. I took a look at the

scheduled for 8pm every day!

Mark,

You are supposedly a Degrassi Guru, but you spelled one of the
character's names wrong!
It's not Yjoti, it's JYOTI! Considering she was practically the only
brown person on the show, you could at least spell her name right and
have more informaton  on her and maybe even some pictures. Jyoti has
had her moments on Degrassi. For example, her stint on "Stage
Fright", "He loves me..", "It's late", and many more. If you need any
information about Jyoti, email me.. I know alot about her and Mahmoud
and there is this other brown girl named Srinka. Have you heard of
her?
Thanks for the Jyoti (Sabrina Dias) information and really hope you
add some and pay credit to Sabrina Dias (Jyoti) and Samer Kamal
(Mahmoud)

Thanks again, Sunjay Mathuria
*Mark* I corrected it, thank you.

Hi There Mark,

I am a HUGE drgrassi fan too- I have most of the episodes from both
series on tape.
I found your site VERY interesting.

I found some information on another site- but can't sem to confirm it
by cross checking.
Is it true that Neve Campbell was an extra on Degrassi Juniour High??

I think I would've spotted her.
Also, I read that the characher Maya did really not use a wheel
chair . I wonder why they didn't use a person who really uses a wheel
chair??

I wish my kids shared my enthusiasm for the show that I do. They see
it as really dated (there's one show that Joey is showing Snake a car
he wants to buy and Joey says "It's got a tape deck and
everything!!". And when they use the term "Narvo" in a couple of
episodes.  Classic 80's.   :)
Anyway, PLEASE e-mail me when you get a chance ......not being able
to spot Neve is really bothering me.......

Sheri, Peterborough, Ont
*Mark* I know her brother was on Degrassi and School's Out, but I do
not think Never was an extra or I am not sure if she appeared on
Degrassi at all.  I read that Pat dated her, but I'm not sure...

Dear
Mark,

I was wondering if you ever got any solid information on who
Neil Hope was at odds with amongst the Degrassi cast, that prevented
him from attending the reunion
on  Jonovision?  It seems to me that he made many enemies if he had
to set up an interview on a rooftop, rather than sit with former
castmates within a studio. There is a rumor that one castmate refused
to appear if he showed up,  which is information  I found out from
your site. I just started to find out information about his
childhood, and growing up around parents that have problems with the
bottle, which might explain if he came to the Degrassi set everyday
stressed out,  lashing out at other people or any other behavorial
problems.  I just wondered if you knew anything more about this?
 Take Care!

*Mark* There was a fallout between Neil and another actor from the TV
show and this is why he was not on Jonovision and he only had a one
minute appearance on the reunion episode of Degrassi: The Next
Generation.

This link system will help both of our sites to increase Google rank

Please let me know either way if you are interested in the link

Hello, Mr. Polger,

I was wondering if you could help me with a few Degrassi related
questions.
My first question is about a special that aired back during the run of
Degrassi High where Pat Mastroianni had an apperance talking about
Aids
this special was an hour and also featured Megan Follows do you know
what it was called?

Second there was show that featured Stacie Mistysyn playing the
girlfiend of a gang of street youths, this show was an hour and also
aired around the time of Degrassi High. I recently was able to send
Stacie Mistysyn a fan letter through e-mail but I forgot to ask her
about it.

And concerning Liberty street I know the movie X-rated was the pilot
to
the sereis, but I remember The first Liberty Street show that had
aired
had both Pat and Stacie in it, I even remember the t.v. guide with
story. Am I correct?

None of my friends can remember any of this stuff and I have been
trying
to find it on the net with no luck, If any of these questions appear
on
your site my computer is very old and cannot navigate to well.

About your site and Pat Mastroianni website I do not seem to be able
to
join your Degrassi webring and when I look at Pat's site alot of the
stuff such as FAQ etc do not appear on my screen, as I say my computer
is an old Macintosh but is there any way I could join the webring with
this.

I really want to thank you for any help you could give me with these
questions I have looked everywhere for the info. Kepp up the great in
providing fans with such a great site! Thanks again

*Mark* I am not sure of the TV Show with Pat and Megan...I think I
heard of it, but I am not sure of its name, was it a documentary??? X-
Rated was the pilot movie for Liberty Street, a real life
neighbourhood in Toronto's west end factory/Tv production studio
district...off King street West...Pat and Stacie were only featured
together on X-Rated.

Hey there,

I think I am one of the biggest fans of Degrassi in America.
Unfortunatly, in the U.S., not everything airs like in Canada.

I was lucky enough to acquire every episode of Degrassi Junior High,
Degrassi High and School's Out on the WGBH videos.  My first question
is, besides the ending scene on A New Start Part 2, which was very
controversial, do those videos edit out anything else that was seen
in Canada?

Very soon I want to acquire the episodes of The Kids of Degrassi
Street from WGBH.  If there was 26 episodes of the series, why is
WGBH selling 25 of them, and not the other episode?

Is there anywhere where I can acquire the Degrassi Talks videos?  I
saw them on ebay a while ago, but didn't buy them.

Also, the one thing that I haven't seen everywhere, but am the most
interested in, is Degrassi Between Takes.  Where I can get it?

Adam

*Mark* The U.S. versions were uncut and contained the full episode
except "A New Start Part Two"
The Canards Move Out was not bundled into that package for Kids of

Hi Mark:

I am wondering if you know anyone I can contact regarding the
whereabouts of the original Degrassi-ites: Zoe Newman, Dawn Harrison
and Allan Melusi? I'm intensely curious as to what they're doing
these days, and haven't been able to find any info on the Net. When
Degrassi reunions happen (on TV, for example), it's as if the
original 'Kids of Degrassi' series never happened. Perhaps I should
try Epitome Productions? Or maybe Kevin Smith (perhaps he'd be
interested in casting them in his next movie)? Thanks.

Gregory Lawrence
*Mark* Sorry, contact Epitome Pictures for more information.

Hey Mark,

My name is Kathy I am from Winnipeg. I have been getting your digest
for awhile now, a few years anyway.

Anyway I am going to be in the T.O. next month and I really wanna
have a Degrassi sighting. I really, really wanna go to where the Next
Generation is filmed and see if I can run into Stefan, Amanda or Pat.
I am going to the T.O. cause my friend is doing her end of the year
theatre production at Ryerson. Anyway she will be doing the play and
I will have time on my hands so, I thought I might make this my
mission. I really want to get my picture taken with at least one of
them. Could you please possibly email me back and tell me where Next
Generation is filmed or where there is always a regular sighting,
like someones work or something.

It would be totally wicked if I came home with a good sighting story.
I was there a few years ago and I was able to visit the schools
(thanks to your directions) and it was great.

Anyway, totally thanks.

Kathy C
*Mark* Sorry, sightings occur all over Toronto, maybe hang around
Queen Street west, many sightings happen there, or Kensington Market
or maybe my neighbourhood, the Danforth, I know some of the cast live
here....Sorry i am not of any help....

Hi!
I really like the song they played at the end of the White Wedding
Episode when Emma and Sean kiss. I tried looking at the name of the
song when the credits were rolling, but it went so fast I missed it.
Do
you know who sang this song and what the title is?

Thanks!

*Mark* Tape the episode, check the credits, it may be listed..I do
not know the song title or the artist who sang the song...BUT it was
most likely a Canadian singer/songwriter...for sure....

Hello Mark,
My name is jenna, I work in a university health clinic and I educate
students about various health topics.

One of my assignments this year is to present to a class of third

are piecing together a fun interactive presentation. One of the
suggestions we had was to include a clip from a memorable Degrassi
Junior High epidsode #11 (It's Late). We wanted to incorporate the
first scenes of this video. We are all children of the 80's and
sometimes educational messages are more meaningful when we can relate.

I realize you are a dedicated fan and I was wondering if you would be

I look forward to your reply,

Hello,

I am not a reporter or a journalist, but I am an avid
fan of
Degrassi, and I have been ever since I was in Junior High myself.
There were
a lot of themes that gave me some guidance for my own personal life.

I am now 27 years old, and when I heard that Degrassi:
the
Next Generation was hosting the wedding of Snake and Spike, a few of
my
truly favourite characters, I had to watch it. My husband had to
laugh when I
turned off the ringer to the phone so that I didn't miss a thing.

I just have a few questions regarding this episode. I
had
noticed that the character Lucy was walking with a cane. Did she
recently
develop an illness that I may have missed? Is it MS? Also, my other
two
favorite characters, Joey and Caitlin, I was watching them very
closely, and
I am wondering if we will hear wedding bells for them in the near
future? I
think that back then, Joey really hadn't grown up (matured) and he
needed to
do that, and I think that NOW would be a great way to get all the old
die
hard fans from the first years back into Degrassi.

I also wanted to thank you for this show. Not only did
it help
me in life choices, but a lot of my friends were watching this show
too. I
also have a few of the books that were published long ago.

Congratulations on such a wonderful program with great
topics
and messages for today's (and yesterday's) youth. To have such
characters
deal with heavy stories like teen pregnancy, loosing both parents to
a drunk
driver, and then to face alcoholism, date rape, Leukemia (JD's
character),
and abortion, those are topics that all youth face and I think that
you are
a great medium to help them, as they don't usually go to their
parents for
advice.

Again keep up the great work, and I would look forward to
any of
the old characters coming back for a reunion show? Great job, and
kudos to
you all!

Always a fan,

Nicole Nogue (Edmonton, AB)
*Mark* Lucy had permanent injuries from her car accident with Wheels
from School's Out.  Don;t thank me for the program, I was not
involved in its production.  I'm sure there will be wedding bells for
Joey and Caitlin, can you see the allusion to it in White Wedding???
There is a lot of projection and foreshadowing happening, it seems so
obvious....that Joey and Caitlin will be together.....

I have a question about Degrassi that I have been trying to find the
answer to for several years.  I was wondering if an episode of
Degrassi was ever filmed at Fredericton High School in Fredericton,
New Brunswick. It would have been sometime between 1990-1992.  If so,
what episode was it.  The reason I am asking is because that is my
old high school and when my brother went there he said that an
episode was being taped there but we never could find the episode.  I
really hope you can help me because I am a HUGE fan of the show and
have been watching it since it was Kids of Degrassi Street.
Thanks,
April

*Mark* I do not think so, not that I know of...Probably Degrassi
Talks, which was a cross country documentary across Canada in summer
1991 and was broadcast on CBC in summer 1992 (I think those were the
dates...)

Hello Mark

It's been ages since I last posted to the Digest but I'm a regular
reader and
I enjoy reading posts from fellow Degrassi fans.  I was just thinking
that
it's been about 12 or so years ago that I first watched Degrassi
Junior High
in Australia.  You, David Nashtir and Kim Gilmour are to be credited
for
establishing fan websites which undoubtedly did much to keep interest
in the
series alive (am I asking too much of Linda Schuyler to express
formal thanks

Anyway, congratulations on 5 years with the Digest...I'm sure there
will be
many more years of Digests to come.

stuff i've thought about recently:

1. It was groovy how Dwayne was only known as "bully" in the

This response is for Kimya:
I just bought the DHS tapes from Amazon, and I'm pretty sure they are
the censored American version.  For example, the abortion episode
ended
with a still of Heather and Erica, rather than a still of the old lady
holding up the plastic fetus saying, "This is your baby".  The one
benefit to having the American version is that the episodes are a
little
longer because there were no commercial breaks when they originally
aired (I think).
It's been great watching all the episiodes again.   I've only gone
through three tapes though just in case I get stuck in my apartment
during an impending transit strike and need entertainment.
I had forgotten what a sassy dresser Melanie is, and how much I'm
annoyed by the character of Luke, mainly because it is such an
accurate
portrayal of an apathetic high school boy.  I'm also getting nervous
knowing that the Claude suicide episode is coming up...it was all so
nice in the beginning; with the earring and everything.
Anyhow, hope this helps.

Bettina

Hey all,

Long time since I posted.

Anyway, I wanted to quickly address the issue of
Noggin censoring the D:TNG episodes.  Sad to say, but
I'm not surprised.  A few years ago, ABC Family (then
Fox Family) reran the first half of My So-Called Life
and cut a few scenes out episodes here and there (I
don't know if it was for syndication or time purposes
or what, but they seemed to be the more "explicit"
scenes ...); the same happened when Fox/ABC Family
picked up "Freaks and Geeks" and ran those for a while
during 2001.  Although they did air some of the
episodes that NBC never aired in the States (all 19
eps actually did run in New Zealand).  Sad fact of
life that they do this, but like I said, I'm not
surprised.

I don't get Noggin as it is (I'm too cheap to pay for
digital cable), so I don't get ANY Degrassi except for
what little I have on tape.

Oh well, c'est la vie, n'est-ce pas?

-Tom ;)

Greetings! I'm so happy that I found this group. I loved watching
Degrassi Junior High, and am the exact age as the kids were on the
show, so it was cool to see kids my own age being normal.

I recently started watching The Next Generation of Degrassi on "The
N", whenever I can.  I must say, that as a die hard Degrassi fan, I'm
a little disappointed in how mild the show is.  I am watching it in
America, so it seems to be edited quite a bit, but I'm surprised that
so far nothing really has been mentioned about teen pregnancy
(although I heard there is a story coming up with Paige), racial
dating (save for the episode with Hazel's ethnicity and the crack
Jimmy made to Spinner about not being able to dance [because he is
white]).   When I see those episodes of talk shows where "my teen
daughter dresses like a whore", I'm reminded of Stephanie Kaye, and
wonder why no one is like that on Degrassi now!?

I must also admit that I love watching the show for the reunion bits,
and am happy that there are more of them coming. I just wish the show
could get some of that edge back.

On a final note, I heard somewhere that Beverly Hills 90210 was
created by Spelling when he could not buy Degrassi.  I find it odd
that Noggin is censoring Degrassi now (I understand the
explanations), yet that 90210 is running non stop in syndication.
That show had more bed hopping, drug use, etc, and it was glamorized
in most causes (or spotlighted in a fleeting "very special episode").

I'm still a big Degrassi fan and am looking forward to reading the
digests.

Sorry for the long post!
