• Exclusive look: Discovery's 'Yukon Men' put their lives on the line

    Discovery Channel

    Stan on "Yukon Men."

Living in the wild can be an adventure. But in remote parts of Alaska? Surviving can be a challenge. A huge one. Discovery Channel's new show "Yukon Men" takes a look at how the people of Tanana, Alaska, an isolated town with a population of about 250, survive the region's extreme winters.

According to the network, it's not just that the people of Tanana must struggle to find food and warmth in the harsh climate. (Weather.com lists a record January low of -76F, with the average low for that month being -17F.) They also have to fight off a lot of wolves to survive. But that's not all that threatens the people.

An exclusive clip of the "Yukon Men" premiere Discovery is sharing with The Clicker shows just how dangerous living in Tanana can be. Stan, one of the series' subjects, has been in the wilds of Alaska for 40 years and knows what it takes to survive.

On a journey with his 21-year-old son Joey, Stan shows the young man how to walk across the deadly Tozitna River in the winter. During the frigid season, the river is mostly frozen solid, but its current in the middle of the channel is so fast that it doesn't always freeze. So one misplaced step and you could be swimming with the fishes.

"If you go through where that channel is ... you're gone. It's all over," Stan tells the cameras. Watch the clip and see how he makes the treacherous trip across the river:

Will Stan survive crossing the river? Check out the "Yukon Men" premiere at 10 p.m. on Aug. 24 on Discovery to find out.

  • Angelina Jolie's daughter cast in 'Maleficent'

Jackson Lee / Splash News / Jackson Lee / Splash News

Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, get ready for your close-up.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's 4-year-old daughter has landed a role in her mom's upcoming live-action fairy tale, "Maleficent," E! News has learned.

Disney confirmed the news, announcing that Viv will play the child version of Elle Fanning's character Princess Aurora in the flick, a 3-D reworking of 1959's "Sleeping Beauty" that explores the origins of the Mouse House's iconic villain, Maleficent.

    See Angelina Jolie as Maleficent!

Jolie plays the titular sorceress who casts a spell on Aurora, so the probability that Angie and Vivienne will act in the same scene together is pretty high, if not a fate accompli, while the fantasy continues shooting in the U.K.

Regarding the casting, a source close to the 37-year-old Oscar winner told Britain's The Sun that "Ange thought it would be a fun experience for her and Viv to share, and Viv is a natural."

Perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise then if Viv's twin brother, Knox, clamors for a part as well, not to mention big sibs Shiloh, Pax, Zahara and Maddox.

Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie hit the beach with their brood

Though Shiloh doesn't have much to complain about, as she had a cameo as Pitt's big-screen daughter in 2008's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

Maleficent hits theaters on March 14, 2014.

  • 'True Blood' finale sneak peek: Is Sam Merlotte a dead man?

Trouble has been brewing all season for the humans of "True Blood" as the Sanguinista vampires rise up and feed freely on their "cattle," but it looks like at least one beloved show regular also could meet his end this Sunday.

A new clip from the finale of the HBO drama hints at a possible death for shifter Sam Merlotte as he comes face to face with Vampire Bill at the Authority's secret headquarters. Sure, the two men were once pals, but new Evil Bill doesn't let that stop him from baring his fangs to tear into his former-buddy-turned-meal. Check it out:

But Sam's death isn't quite certain. HBO's episode description notes that Sam and girlfriend Luna, who snuck into the Authority's headquarters to rescue her daughter Emma last week, test their limits trying to escape the Lilith worshiping fangers. Viewers have seen the pair shift into animals, insects and even humans ... could vampires be next?

Though Sam's death is a question mark, it looks like there could be one emotional death. A photo released by HBO from the season finale shows both Sookie and Eric with a look of shock on their faces, but that's not all. Eric is splattered with blood as a tear runs down the half-faerie's cheek.

    John P. Johnson / HBO

Eric and Sookie don't look too pleased on the season finale.

The "True Blood" season five finale, "Save Yourself," airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO.

  • I can paint that! Wait, no I can't! Amateur artist messes up century-old artwork

Would you think to match your home-grown painting skills against a classical artist? Probably not, but that's just what a well-intentioned woman in her 80s did recently in Spain.

Centro De Estudios Borjanos via EPA

The picture on the left shows the original work, the one in the middle the pre-renovated fresco and the one on the right shows the damaged painting.

The three photos above tell the tale. The image on the left is the original work, a century-old oil painting of Christ called "Ecce Homo (Behold the Man)" that was painted on a column inside a church near Zaragoza, Spain, by artist Elias Garcia Martinez.

Over the years, the work began to deteriorate, as shown in the second image. According to the Centre de Estudios Borjanos, the unnamed amateur artist (without permission from the church, needless to say) thought she could improve the work and set to work with paints and brushes. The third picture is the result.

The BBC reports that the woman realized her mistake and contacted Juan Maria Ojeda, a city council member in charge of cultural affairs for the area. "I think she had good intentions," Ojeda told the BBC.

A team of art restoration experts is reportedly examining the painting, will quiz the woman on what materials she used in her attempt, and will figure out how best to proceed.

"If we can't fix it, we will probably cover the wall with a photo of the painting," Ojeda told the BBC.

The BBC Europe correspondent described the painting's current state as resembling "a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic."

While Martinez's work was not considered especially valuable, the BBC reports that the painter's granddaughter had just donated a sum of money to restore the peeling image. Apparently the helpful would-be artist took it upon herself to get involved without knowing that, but if she had just waited, the work would have been fixed properly.

What do you think of the resulting artwork? Do you feel sorry for the woman, or should she have known better? Tell us on Facebook.

  • 'Dirty Dancing' turns 25, Baby still not in a corner

Did you have the time of your life when your hungry eyes first saw "Dirty Dancing"? Can you believe the classic 1987 film is now 25 years old?

Jennifer Grey and daughter Stella arrive at the 25th anniversary screening of "Dirty Dancing."

Sadly, Patrick Swayze, who so memorably played Catskills resort dance instructor Johnny Castle, died of pancreatic cancer in 2009. But at the film's anniversary celebration Tuesday, his co-star, Jennifer Grey, found the best possible replacement dance partner in her own daughter, 11-year-old Stella. (Grey's husband, Clark Gregg, was recently seen as Special Agent Coulson in "The Avengers.")

The film shouldn't have succeeded as it did. It was a low-budget picture from a new studio with no major stars -- yes, back in the day, even Swayze wasn't the household name he became. It had a retro setting (1963) and the drama was quiet.

    Vestorn

Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in 1987's "Dirty Dancing."

But the leads' chemistry was incredible, and every young girl in the theater seats could envision herself in Grey's place. And the soundtrack exploded, with such hits as "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," "Hungry Eyes," and "She's Like the Wind." And the line "Nobody puts Baby in a corner!" is still one of the most-quoted movie lines of all time.

Although there's been much talk about a movie remake (and Swayze had a cameo in 2004's "Dirty Dancing" Havana Nights"), true fans believe the original can't be touched. You only have the time of your life once, that's kind of the point.

  • REDRUM! NHL goalie wears scenes from 'The Shining' on mask

Few movies are as terrifying as 1980's "The Shining."

Jack Nicholson's murderous face. Shelley Duvall screaming in terror. Danny's Big Wheel making the rounds of the Overlook Hotel hallways. The spooky twin girls. REDRUM.

    daveart.com

Richard Bachman's goalie mask features scenes from "The Shining."

Dallas Stars goaltender Richard Bachman has the same name "Shining" author Stephen King used as a pen name, and he decided to play up the connection in a creepy yet cool way, having his goalie mask designed with scenes from the famed film.

Yes, the scary twins are there, plus Nicholson, Duvall and other references, some of which it would take a real "Shining" fan to figure out.  Artist David Gunnarsson even included a snippet of the pattern from the Overlook's carpet.

"This may be one of the most scary (masks) I've ever created," Gunnarsson writes on Facebook. "We wanted the mask to have the same uncomfortable feeling you have when you just wake up after a nightmare."

Gunnarsson has designed other creative goalie masks, including  one for a Swedish player that includes an image of Heath Ledger as The Joker from 2008's "The Dark Knight."

  • 'Honest' trailer for 'Hunger Games' pokes fun at film and stars

"The Hunger Games" has sold nearly 4 million DVDs and Blu-ray discs since hitting stories last week, but not everyone thinks the film lives up to the hype.

A video from Honest Trailers, which purports to advertise films as they really are, takes issue with Katniss’ (Jennifer Lawrence) ability to outwit other tributes by hanging out in trees and Peeta’s (Josh Hutcherson) ridiculously detailed cake decorating skills, and asks why the "much hotter" Gale (Liam Hemsworth) is not Katniss’ first choice.

  • Whoops! 'Avengers' bloopers reel shows superhero super goofs

After cracking up during a romantic scene with Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts, Robert Downey Jr. snarks to the "Avengers" camera crew, "You gonna have a gag reel on this like 'Smokey and the Bandit'?"

Yes indeedy. As the famed "Bandit" theme music rolls, a four-minute "Avengers" blooper reel ensues, offering up some very un-superhero-like goofs from the blockbuster hit.

Original Video - More videos at TinyPic

It seems that even if you're Captain America, you might have some trouble putting on a parachute. Or land flat on your back when swinging from a tree limb.

And it's really not that easy for Iron Man to don his helmet. Or for Thor to juggle his famed hammer.

Cobie Smulders gets to chew some scenery in a very "Khaaaaan!"-like way as she mourns a lost character, uttering the classic line, "You will be avenged! I will get the Avengers, and you will be avenged!"

Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye muses a little about "Star Trek," only to find his memories of that show are perhaps not as fresh as he thought.

Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner gets to play the opposite of his raging Hulk character and run away in fright.

But it's Downey Jr. who repeatedly steals the show, with the cocky charm of an improv comic, once snapping, "Jarvis, don't ever speak to me once I'm off-camera."

The gag reel will be included on the "Avengers" DVD and Blu-ray, which will be out Sept. 25.

  • Natalie Wood's death certificate amended by coroner

Natalie Wood's death certificate has been changed to reflect some of the uncertainties and lingering questions surrounding the actress' drowning more than 30 years ago in the Pacific Ocean off Southern California.

The document was amended earlier this month and shifts Wood's death from an accidental drowning to "drowning and other undetermined factors," according to a copy of the certificate obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press.

The amended document also now states that the circumstances of how Wood ended up in the waters off Catalina Island in November 1981 are "not clearly established."

The changes occurred nine months after sheriff's homicide investigators renewed their inquiry into Wood's death shortly before its 30th anniversary.

Chief of Detectives William McSweeney said the decision to amend the death certificate was ultimately made by the coroner's office, which has been instructed by detectives not to discuss the case. "I would just say undetermined is descriptive," he said.

    AP

Natalie Wood's death certificate, which was amended on Aug. 1, 2012.

McSweeney said detectives still have work to do on the case, but that doesn't necessarily mean that a major shift is coming.

"We don't close these cases," he said. "These cases have active periods and more passive periods. We're moving toward the end of an active period."

The changes to the death certificate were approved by Los Angeles County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Lakshmanan Sathyavagiswaran in late June, but they were not formally recorded until Aug. 1. The certificate wasn't made public until just recently.

Conflicting versions of what happened on the yacht shared by Wood, her actor-husband Robert Wagner and their friend, actor Christopher Walken, have contributed to the mystery of how the actress died on Thanksgiving weekend in 1981. Authorities have said Wagner is not a suspect in his wife's death.

Investigators re-opened the case last November but have released few details about its progress. They traveled to Hawaii to inspect the Splendour, the yacht the trio was aboard on the night of Wood's disappearance.

The renewed inquiry came after the boat's captain, Dennis Davern, told "48 Hours Mystery" and the TODAY show that he heard Wagner and Wood arguing the night of her disappearance and believed Wagner was to blame for her death.

Wagner wrote in a 2008 memoir that he and Walken argued that night. He wrote that Walken went to bed and he stayed up for a while, but when he went to bed, he noticed that his wife and a dinghy attached to the yacht were missing.

Wagner has said through a spokesman that he expects the sheriff's department to conduct a fair investigation. An email seeking comment Tuesday was not returned.

Wood was nominated for three Academy Awards during her lifetime. Her death stunned the world and has remained one of Hollywood's most enduring mysteries. The original detective on the case, Wagner, Walken and until recently, the coroner's office, have all said they considered her death an accident.

This will be Lavigne's second marriage and Kroeger's first. Lavigne was previously married to Sum 41 frontman and guitarist Deryck Whibley. She filed for divorce in 2009 after three years of marriage.

Lavigne was most recently linked to "The Hills" star Brody Jenner, son of Olympian Bruce Jenner and ex-wife Linda Thompson.
