LIBYA is to be represented by two athletes at the London 2012 Summer Paralympic Games that start this coming Wednesday, August 29, with what is once again expected to be a spectacular opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium in the Olympic Park that a few weeks ago hosted the London 2012 Olympic Games. This latest event will last until September 9.

So, just over two weeks from the Greatest Sports Show on Earth London will once again be the focus of the sport fraternity for yet another important event and this time welcome the world's best Paralympic athletes who despite their handicaps will be given the chance to prove themselves to the world of their skills.

The Libyan Paralympic Committee has chosen 38-year-old Abdulrazag Al Babaa to compete in weightlifting (75kg category), and Hamza Al Hamali, 25 in the javelin. Both managed to qualify with impressive performances for the chance to be among the 4,200 athletes for the Games.

Abdulrazag Al Babaa is the winner of a number of gold and silver medals from several international tournaments such as the 2009 Fazza International Athletics tournament in Dubai and the 2005 African Championships in Egypt. This year he also obtained12th placing in the Fazzaa tournament that earned him qualification for the London event.

Qualifying for the London 2012 Paralympics is the javelin thrower Hamza Al Hamali's latest achievements. He holds a gold medal from the 2012 Sharjah International Athletics competition is a silver medallist from this year's Fazza International Athletics tournament.

The athletes will be travelling to London Thursday to join most of the other athletes that arrived in London on Wednesday.

The general Libyan federation for the people with special needs (Libyan Paralympic Committee) was founded in 1981. It is one of the sport organisations that survives on limited resources. However, even during difficult times it has continued to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities.

The organisation encourages people in Libya with different physical or other disabilities to participate in sport and to overcome their handicaps by choosing the sports activities they feel are best suited for their disabilities.

The Paralympic Games are a multi-sport event for athletes with physical, mental and sensorial disabilities. This includes mobility disabilities, amputees, visual disabilities and those with cerebral palsy. They are held every four years, following the Olympic Games, and are governed by the International Paralympic Committee, IPC.

These will be the fourteenth Paralympics, and the second larg-est multi-sport event ever held within the United Kingdom after the 2012 Olympic Games

They will see the Paralympic Movement return to the country of its spiritual birthplace. It will be the biggest Paralympics ever, featuring 4,200 athletes from 162 countries compete in 19 sports.
