Sabratha, Libya-- A blood transfusion workshop is expected to become the first milestone for the development of a safe, efficient and effective blood transfusion services in Libya after decades of neglect by the former corrupt regime. The workshop, sponsored by the Libyan Ministry of Health, aims at accomplishing many objectives.
A press lease by the organizing committee obtained by The Tripoli Post states “as part of new health reforms in Libya, a workshop is being launched later on this month to establish a new blood transfusion service in Libya.”
“It is widely known that the Libyan Blood Transfusion Service has suffered from decades of negligence and ignorance under the previous corrupted regime. A recent review has shown that the current transfusion services are fragmented, inefficient, severely under resourced and perhaps dangerous for patients,” the release added.
For the time being, Libya does not comply with World Health Organization (WHO) Blood Directives produced in 2006.
It is within this framework that the ambitious “Safe Blood for All” workshop will take place at the Oncology Institute in Sabratha city, 70 kms west of Tripoli, on 22-23 August.
The workshop will feature home-based and expatriate Libyan haematologists as well as other doctors, foreign officials and representatives of regional blood transfusion units.
Among the topics that will be debated at the workshop including: Libyan BTS: present reality and promising future, Standards and Regulatory issues in transfusion, Blood transfusion – Benghazi experience, Blood transfusion – Tripoli experience and other experiences in Arab countries and the world.
The event organisers hope that the workshop will be the first milestone to developing a safe and effective blood transfusion service on a national basis. The initiative is organized by the backed by the Libyan Ministry of Health and aims at the following:
1.Highlight the importance of safe blood transfusion to the Public and make it a priority for the next Libyan Government. The national media would have an extremely important role to play.
2.Agree on a comprehensive strategy to modernize blood transfusion services in Libya in line with international standards.
3.Discuss and agree on a structural model for an independent, state-funded National Transfusion Blood Service which will be entirely responsible for blood transfusion in Libya and will be the licensing body for blood banks.
4.Formalize the minimum standards that are required for blood banks to function in the country.
5.Work with different media channels to create cultural change towards blood transfusion; to ensure that blood only be collected from safe & voluntary, unremunerated donors and discourage commercial and replacement donors, as per WHO requirement.
6.Harness the available support from international and regional organizations such as WHO and Pan Arab Organization, respectively, for blood banks to create rigorous training programs that would have serious impact on blood safety in Libya.
7.Practically create a unified spirit between home-based and expatriate Libyan Doctors as Libya is for all, by all and above all. For more information on the workshop, please contact Otman Salamat at otmansalamat@gmail.com

Saluting our 'Ladies with the Lamp' - By Prashant Bhatt
12th May is the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, who is widely regarded as one of the founders of modern Nursing. Another is from former Yugoslavia but Tripoli is home to her, a place where she lived and worked for 33 years. Still nursing is one of the key factors in determining the successful outcome of treatment. It can also be one of the weakest and neglected links in healthcare delivery. |
