Maurice Jones-Drew ends holdout; returns to Jacksonville Jaguars

On Sunday morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew will return to his team after a 38-day holdout. The report was confirmed by NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, and seriously confirmed by Jags running back Rashad Jennings.

Jones-Drew, who led the NFL in rushing in 2011 with 1,606 yards, has held out through the entire preseason because he wants a re-structured contract. In a recent conference call with local reporters, Jags head coach Mike Mularkey said that he was hearing "rumors" that MJD might return sooner than later — and in time for the Jags' regular-season opener against the Minnesota Vikings next Sunday.

"I have not heard from Maurice,'' Mularkey said in a recent conference call with local reporters. "I've heard those same things just like you have, but nothing from the people that need to tell its firm.''

But how, Mularkey was asked, does a head coach get those rumors when he spends so much time at the team facility?

"I get out," he said. "Today, I'm actually off to catch up with my wife to see what is going on in her life. I've heard things out on the street just like you guys do. It wasn't on Twitter.''

When the Jaguars cut their roster to the final 53 on Saturday, they placed Jones-Drew on the Reserve/Did Not Report list, so they would receive a roster exemption when the running back returned to the team. Jones-Drew would thus be available to start Week 1, but Mularkey has said that Jennings would most likely be the main man until Jones-Drew was sure to be in game shape. Jennings rushed for 209 yards on 47 carries in the preseason, finishing second to Arizona's William Powell in preseason rushing yards.

"That's hasn't come up, that discussion. We've got to get him in first. He's got to come in. We'll go from there. That has not been addressed yet,'' Mularkey said.

Jones-Drew, who signed a five-year, $31 million contract in 2009, has collected $21.8 million in the first three seasons, but wants to be paid in line with other elite backs. That would include the contacts recently given to Adrian Peterson (seven years, $100 million, $30 million guaranteed), Chris Johnson (four years, $53.5 million, $30 million guaranteed), LeSean McCoy (five years, $45.6 million, $20.8 million guaranteed), Arian Foster (five years, $43.5 million, $20.8 million guaranteed), and Matt Forte (four years, $32 million, $18 million guaranteed).

Jones-Drew could be fined up to $1.2 million by the team for off-season time should the Jaguars choose that option, but it's more likely that both sides will forgive and forget. Jones-Drew is returning now because if he doesn't, he starts losing game checks. And with a $4.45 million base salary in 2012, every week of in-season absence would have cost Jones-Drew $261,765.

In the end, the Jags are unlikely to move on Jones-Drew's requests. "There's no decision here,'' Jags owner Shad Khan told the Florida Times-Union in July. "It's his choice. There's been very little for us to do rather than wait on whatever he might choose to do ... There's more than 50 players [on the team] under contract. There are other people under contract in management, coaches. Does that mean if you do it for one, you do it for everybody.

"Where do you draw the line?''

you made thr contract live by it as we have to. i think if you sign a contract you should have to live by it,as this is how we end up with these delays, this man is all for himself forgeting his team of blockers helped in his sucess,so in thinkihg like that the linemen should be the one's to get the raise shouldn't they?

What's up, these guys think they don't have to honor their contracts, I think he has two more years at around 4 million per year.

Ya, and if he sucks this year do you think he'll let the jags restructure and pay him less???? Dude better look up the definition of "contract."

It's nice that someone "did the math", finally.
But IF they don't enforce the FINES, isn't that sending a similar message?

That's what kills me about athletes! They have a break out season and automatically feel they are "entitled" to get paid more because other "elite" players get paid more. Fine, then their contract should say that if they don't get "x" amount of yards or whatever then they get money taken away.

Then he shouldn't have signed the contract.

      He shows up 5'7" and 125 lbs...lol...

No he is not!!!! Not even close!!! The only reason he was top rusher is because Jacksonville had no other offensive option! Gimme a break. Best. Arian Foster, Adrian Peterson, Lesean Mccoy, Matt Forte??? Even Frank Gore, in my opinion. You are crazy.

I dont care who you are, you signed and agreed to a contract. You should be expected to live up to that agreement.

Why don't these teams/players just start signing 2 year contracts at a time. The players don't honor their long term contracts anyway.
When's the last time you heard of a high profile player signing a 7-8 yr deal, and then playing for the agreed amount for the length of the contract? Or NOT holding out, not sitting out claiming "injury", not using the press/twitter to whine, or not being an overall distraction to the team...because half way through the contract they are no longer satisfied with their pay. (Usually because someone else signed yesterday for more money and they think "hey...I'm better than him, I deserve more now.") NO #$%$ you don't. You deserve to be paid for the contracted amount YOU agreed to. Shut up and play. Sign a new contract when you fulfill the old one.
Long term contracts are no guarantee for owners that players will stay anyway. No loyalty and no honor on either side. Just greed. Save US the drama and yourselves the disgrace.
2 years just makes sense to me.

You know, I don't follow this stuff much but doesn't this guy belong to the player's union? If so, are they just allowed to break away and demand what they want?
At what point do the owners have to reach before they decide that it might be better to just let him go?
    • emb001981  •  23 hours ago
When these guys sign the contracts they love getting that fat money in the beginning. By the time they get near the end they dont like it so much. But who signed the contract? The terms are spelled out in black and white from the start. If you have a problem with the back end of the deal then don't sign it to begin with!!

Then the Arizona cardinals can re-negotiate Kevin Kolb,s contract from $60,000,000 to $100,000 for sitting in the bench........

How much did it cost him?
    • A Yahoo! User  •  1 day 0 hours ago
Good for Jacksonville. Make him abide by his contract. They want long term contracts for stability, but want to renegotiate when they have a stellar year. If that is the way they want it, they should just sign one year contracts.

This is America, where people with no knowledge or intelligence can talk about their opinions like they know what they are talking about(or forget about their own life mishaps). It seems most people are posting out of envy and prejudice rather than true principle. First, he is not wanting to break his contract, he is asking for a contract restructure of extension(a raise, you know what most Americans want). Every day people, who have salary receive raises and promotions that requires a restructure or amendment to their initial employment contract. On the opposite, many jobs have inquired many people to amend there contracts to do more or receive less. Happens in the NFL all the time. Second, Khan and other owners have the option to cut players and not even honor a contract, remember Donovan McNabb with the Redskins. It goes both ways. I hope the many people who are talking about honoring contract have not engaged in any mortgage, auto loan, private loan, consolidation, etc restructures or amendment, because that would make u a big hypocrite, considering 75% of the country has done such just within the last 4 years.

if i don't show up for work, ummm, i get fired! i thought it was that way for most jobs.
i guess that applies for all but cry baby premadonnas in sports. just cant imagine, all that money to play a childs game.
what happened to the old work incentive, "work or get fired?"
    • BOOGSTER  •  1 day 1 hour ago
Pardon my ignorance, but if you sign a contract and the owner cuts you, is the team still on the hook for salary you were due under that contract?
    • old steve  •  19 hours ago
rb playing life is shorter than most other players...because other (mostly younger) players make more than mjd isn't a reason to redo his contract...my thought is he is probably receiving questionable acvise from his agent...betting more than a million that a holdout would work seems shortsighted at best...btw, farrar is a #$%$..
