Mumbai: In a tragic incident in Mumbai, at least one person died and 10 others got injured when a pillar of an under-construction metro bridge collapsed. Several others were feared to be trapped in the accident.

The concrete pillar collapsed in front of the Leela Hotel in Marol in Andheri East area.

The pillar that collapsed was a part of the Andheri-Kurla metro route.

A total of four rescue vans, two ambulances and five fire engines were rushed to the spot.

The authorities expressed regret over the accident and assured that providing rescue and relief services were the topmost priority for them.

MMOPL, the joint venture between MMRDA and Reliance, has issued a statement saying, "We deeply regret the accident that has happened at the Airport Station Metro site, which is being constructed by our contractor HCC. Our emergency response team along with HCC staff is at the site to provide rescue and relief services, which is the top most and immediate priority for us."

The company also clarified that the length of the bridge that collapsed is 15 meters and not 50 meters as was being reported.

The victim, believed to be a construction worker employed at the site, was declared dead on arrival at the Seven Hills Hospital.

According to sources, another man is admitted in the Seven Hills Hospital in a critical condition with serious chest injuries.

Five others admitted to Seven Hills Hospital and as many at Cooper Hospital are stable, sources said.

Meanwhile, cranes and other heavy machinery were been deployed to clear the huge debris.

Notably, the island city and suburbs received heavy downpour on Monday and early Tuesday morning.

This part of the overhead Metro bridge is on the crowded Andheri-Kurla road that leads to the airport. The collapsed bridge is part of the much-delayed 12-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor of the Mumbai Metro.
