Arab League supports Morocco's territorial integrity
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 1/8/1999

Secretary general of the Arab League, Esmat Abdul Meguid, said the organization supports Morocco's territorial integrity in the Sahara issue.

Abdul Meguid's special advisor, Talaat Hamed, told MAP's office in Cairo that the statement made last week by the chief of the Arab League to the Egyptian "Al Ahram" daily on the Sahara issue was as follows: "The Sahara issue is within the competence of the United Nations Organization, which has asked James Baker, former US secretary of state and currently UN secretary general's special envoy for the Sahara, to follow up the issue through the holding of the UN-sponsored referendum. The position of the Arab League is in favor of Morocco's territorial integrity."

The daily had misquoted Esmat's statement, saying that he stressed "the need for settling the Sahara issue through the holding of a UN-sponsored referendum, a solution that will satisfy all parties."

Moroccan papers had described these statements as "unclear" and wondered on "the solution proposed by Esmat Abdul Meguid and on the parties he cited."
