Alvin martin brought Paul Walsh down in the box and referee George Tyson decided upon a penalty. Jan Molby struck the spot kick home for the Reds. Alvin Martin was still moaning at the ref after this and was booked. Worse was to come though as Ray Stewart threw at the linesman and he received a red card for his trouble.
The Reds took full advantage of the extra man and ten minutes later Rush doubled the lead., Paul Walsh scored three minutes later and it was game over really although Dickens bagged a Consolation eight minutes from time for the Hammers
West Ham boss John Lyall later said that the red card proved decisive and that his side had to learn to control their anger better. Reds manager Dalghsh did accept that the penalty was generous.
