Having a crappy, hectic week. In order to cheer me up, have a sneak peek at the cover I did for this week’s Newcity cover.

Pam Wishbow’s work is so fun and lively. Hard to believe this illustration came from her having a bad week! Well done!

A Comic about Looper, I guess. Or something. (We haven’t seen it yet)

I’m enjoying Haiko Hörnig’s & Marius Pawlitza’s extremely funny Tumblr comic Selektive Erinnerung.

Live2D

Japanese software technology turns 2D drawing into interactive 3D content for use with touchscreen devices - via DigInfo (video embedded below):

Live2D, developed by Cybernoids, is the world’s first drawing technology to enable 3D rendering of 2D images. This technology supports a variety of portable consoles and smartphones, and Live2D is already being utilized for games that take advantage of the unique characteristics of hand drawn artwork.

“In 3D, the unique attractions of 2D art like Osamu Tezuka’s can’t be rendered properly. But with Live2D, we’ve worked to enable smooth 3D motion using entirely the original 2D drawings. So, this system makes the graphics appear exactly as the creator intended.”

“When the face turns sideways, you can show perfectly how the eyelashes and eyes move. You can also use the tools to work more easily and efficiently. This can be done in all kinds of ways, with all kinds of emphasis, depending on what the creator wants to do. This technology is an extension of drawing, so it works best if the creator has a good artistic sense.”

I don’t understand what’s going on here because I’m old and crotchety, but I suspect it’s the future and it’s leaving me further behind than I already thought I was.

Sam Hiti’s stuff is always so uncompromising and awesome and now he’s got a kids’ book out - Waga’s Big Scare (Lerner Books).

I’ve read the book - and it’s creepy and funny and it’s full of Hiti’s big bold brushstrokes and nightmarish monsters; I wish more kids’ books were like this.

Know who this is? When? Where? What? Why it matters?
There has never been a proper textbook on the history of illustration. It’s important, not just for training students but for representing the field and its legacy to the world.
In order to help get a textbook going, I have written a SURVEY to help determine the content, scope, format, and tone of a potential textbook. Whitney Sherman, an instructor at the Maryland Institute College of Art, co-authored the SURVEY, and it was checked over by a range of qualified people. We don’t have plans to write one ourselves - we just see the need for information for whoever does. The  New York Society of Illustrators is sponsoring this SURVEY.
Now it’s YOUR turn - have your say, as a teacher, student, collector, or scholar:

Oh, and it’s Arthur William Brown, circa 1945, New York, unidentified model, and it’s important because Brown was one of the biggest promoters of illustration in his day and a big influence on the evolution of sexualized beauty standards, for better and worse. Original on file at Society of Illustrators.
