June 27 - Qatar will field a fourth female athlete, table tennis player Aya Majdi, at the London Games.

Aya, who won three gold medals — singles, doubles and team — at the 2010 GCC Championship in Doha, will join sprinter Noor Al Malki, swimmer Nada Mohammad Wafa Arakji and shooter Bahiya Mansour Al Hamad for the quadrennial Games.

Qatar Olympic Committee Secretary General Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani confirmed the development last week.

“Qatar will field 12 athletes, eight men and four women, in London. This is one of the biggest contingents we’ve ever had and we’re hopeful of some medal performances from them,” he said.

Aya was thrilled with the turn of events and promised to do her best.

“The invitation to London was so unexpected and surprising. It hasn’t fully sunk in yet. I promise to do my best there,” the 18-year-old told Doha Stadium Plus.

“I’ll attend a camp in China and also take part in the Asian Junior Championship in Jiangyin, from July 11 to 16. It’ll be a good preparation for the Games,” she added.

Qatar women’s table tennis team manager Nada Al Amri was pleased with her ward’s recognition.

“This is a historic moment for women’s table tennis and there’s none better than Aya to be a part of Olympics,” Nada said.

“She’s the best woman paddler the country has ever produced. Even if she doesn’t win a game in London, the mere experience of being there will give her a lot of confidence,” she added.
