It’s not only Norwegians who can do 21st century cosmic disco epics; Birmingham duo Free School seem hell-bent on rivalling Lindstrøm and co for lengthy, levitating grooves. And to a degree they succeed. These tracks, some near 10 minutes long, build and build, beautifully harmonised elements piling on in layers to thoroughly ecstatic effect, and more often than not they manage to achieve take-off. But where Lindstrøm’s tracks are airy and open, Free School specialise in dense, intense drones, and across a whole album it can get a little claustrophobic. There are some truly magic moments here, but after a while you can find yourself craving breathing space.
