A Republican state senator from Owasso is making it official today: He’s running for governor.
Sen. Randy Brogdon is announcing his bid during today’s Oklahoma Republican Convention at the Clarion Meridian Convention Center in Oklahoma City, his campaign announced this morning.
Brogdon has made recent news in Tulsa for his work on an amended bill that would exempt state, county and nonprofit properties from the type of business development district being counted on to help pay off a $25 million bond held by the Tulsa Community Foundation.
The exemption would cut at least $200,000 a year from the debt service revenue stream for the construction of ONEOK Field in downtown Tulsa.
Brogdon later confirmed his amendment is intended, at least in part, to aid Tulsa County in its dispute with the city over new assessments for the ballpark development district.
Brogdon joins U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin, R-Oklahoma City, and Democratic Lt. Gov. Jari Askins in announcing gubernatorial bids in the 2010 election. Gov. Brad Henry, first elected in 2002, can’t seek a third term.
Others considering a possible run at governor include Democratic Attorney General Drew Edmondson, Democratic state Treasurer Scott Meacham and J.C. Watts, a former Republican congressman and Oklahoma Corporation Commission member.
Brogdon, 55, has called on Gov. Brad Henry to reject the $2.6 million in federal stimulus funds the state expects to receive.
“Give it all back to (President) Obama and Congress,” he said then. “There are too many strings attached to this plan and we can’t afford to rob our children’s future in order to take care of our needs today.”
Brogdon has been active in the so-called taxpayers' bill of rights movement and is a national spokesman for the John Birch Society. He has also been outspoken in support of state sovereignty and in opposition to national identification cards and data gathering.
A March poll by Soonerpoll.com showed Brogdon with a 4 percent favorable rating among five possible gubernatorial candidates. More than 90 percent of respondents either had no opinion or had not heard of him.

This is too funny.... Who's letting this dingbat out into the sunlight...

Isnt this the guy that keeps voting down everything Tulsa wants to do, but on the other hand cries "Oh, why cant we all get along?" when its time for Tulsa to vote for something Owasso wants? Just what we need in OKC, yet another person who is against Tulsa.

He will, if elected, drive this state back into the stone ages.
We need progress, not regress.
Lord help us.

Maybe Brogdon could hold a campaign rally down where the new ballpark is going in. We need to make sure Mr. Brogdon stays in Owasso where he belongs, we sure don't need him in the governor's chair.

Since it is a forgone conclusion that Oklahomans are going to elect some right-wing nut job as governor, we can only hope for the lesser of the evils. Mr. Brogdon is definitely the worse of the evils. I find the prospect of Mary Fallin as our governor pretty nauseating, but this guy almost makes her look progressive. He is SCARY. I find it depressing that I feel like the best hope we have is JC Watts. He seems liberal when compared with the other choices.

Brogdon is a crackpot deluxe.

Hey ttownjr, why are you so sure Oklahoman's are going to vote for a "right wing nut job?"
Oklahoma may be a "red" state but we've had Governor "Goober" running our state for 8 years.
Maybe I’m just jaded against any and all politicians!

If he's such a "dingbat", how did he get elected? (Ok, I set myself up for that one...LOL)

beatles I think at the time only a few insiders in Owasso knew any better. It doesn't matter what his party affiliation is, he's crazier than a March hare. Think of him as a cross between Jerry Fallwell and that evil scientist in Stepford Wives, with a little Dick Cheney thrown in for good measure.

Surely the Republicans have someone better to offer. Then again....guess not.

He is from the Sally Bell "wing" of the Republican Party. John Bircher, Tea baggers, secessionists, that group. How proud we are to have such enlightened people running for public office.
I can sum him up in one word: LOSER

He used to be a guest on Mr. Chris Medlock's radio show. That was the icing on the cake for me.The mostly well-fed and not-hurting folks up there in Owasso got taken in by him,too--

Randy Brogdon is the best choice to be Oklahoma's next Governor. I for one, will be doing everything I can to help him accomplish his goal of becoming Oklahoma's next Governor!

I cannot wait to cast my vote for Mr. Brogdon. He is a breath of fresh air. He will fight for the people and wont let the Obama administration tell us, as a sovereign state, what we have to do.

This is the FUNNIEST thing I have heard this month !!!!!
This paranoid Goober-Nut is commonly referred to as "the Dude from Owasso with the Aluminum-Foil-Covered Cowboy Hat" by most of the folks at the state capital. Being prepared is one thing, but his involvement with the folks at John Birch Society and the wack-bats from OK-SAFE will be his ultimate demise.
Enjoy the laughter folks because it will be loud but short lived with this cook and his followers!
Signed,
Cool Hand Luke

Senator Brogdon, dingbat, wingnut, or whatever, obviously has the ability to get elected. With that said, I hope he has to relinquish his senate seat to run for governor. If he does then maybe, just maybe, Owasso can elect someone a little more toward the middle...We'll see. I wonder what makes a guy with his political philosophy think he has statewide appeal. He's seems to be quite narrow-minded.

The John Birch Society, Brodgen's club, once called Dwight D. Eisenhower a traitor. Things that make you say, "hmmm".

Yeah, I hear he and that OK-SAFE group are tied at the hip and that they are fond of some of the John Birch Society's playbook.

What we need in Oklahoma (and nation wide for that matter), is a strong and viable third party.
As for myself, I like the movement toward libertarianism in places like New Hampshire.
It is not Dems alone or Reps alone that are the problem. It is all of them together that is the problem.
Libertarians can bridge the gap between uberliberals and ultraconservatives. They relish gun rights, low taxes and freedom from invasive government (that pleases the conservatives). They also say gay marriage, reproductive rights etc. are personal choices (that pleases the liberals).
Perhaps the easiest way to accomplish "change" is to wipe out D.C. and start over again.

With people like Randy Brogdon running this state a few generations from now Oklahoma will goverened by the American equivalant of the Teliban.

Forgive me, L.Hayes, if I don't have much faith in the "common sense" of the people of Oklahoma. Look at our Senators, Coburn & Inhofe (2 of the biggest embarrassments in the entire Congress) and our congressional delegation, 4 fascists and one democrat-in-name-only, Boren. Everyone knows that Henry only got elected the first time because the cock fighters were ticked off at Steve Largent and only got re-elected because of the power of the incumbency. Now with all of the hysteria that the right is whipping up about President Obama, and Democrats in general, leading us down the road to Socialism, getting rid of our currency and god-only-knows what else, I don't hold out much hope. Everyone knows that most Oklahomans never met a conspiracy theory they didn't like.
