Telos

Aegean island, one of the Dodecanese, which was formerly part of the Ottoman Empire and used stamps of Turkey to 1912 when it was seized by Italy during the Italo-Turkish War of 1911–12, becoming an Italian colony. The island belonged to Italy until 1943 and used general issues of Aegean Islands, overprinted EGEO, throughout that period. On 1 December 1912, Italian stamps were issued with the overprint PISCOPI, which is the Italian name of the island. From January 1916, Italian stamps without overprint were in use. There were further issues for the individual Dodecanese islands in 1930 and 1932 but, for most of the period from 1930 to 1945, a general issue prevailed with the overprint ISOLE ITALIANE DELL' EGEO. The island was occupied by German forces after the Italian armisitice in 1943 but this had no impact on postage. The Dodecanese issue remained in use until the British occupation in 1945 when Middle East Forces (MEF) stamps were introduced. The island was ceded to Greece in September 1947, whereupon there was an initial issue of Greek stamps overprinted SDD (Dodecanese Military Occupation) before issues of general Greek stamps began in the same year. The island formally became a constituent part of Greece on 7 March 1948. Dates: 1912 – 1932 Capital: Megalo Khorio Currency: 100 centesimi = 1 lira Album: Aegean Islands (Dodecanese)
