Documentary about national security whistleblower Julia Davis premiering at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on May 16, 2012

History Making Tell-All Documentary Top Priority: The Terror Within To Debut May 2012

Julia Davis Former Department of Homeland Security Whistleblower Speaks Out in Riveting Documentary

LOS ANGELES, May 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Creative visionary, John Schofield, who produced Academy Award-winning films such as Jerry Maguire, As Good As It Gets, and Ali, has produced the must-see documentary of 2012, Top Priority: The Terror Within (www.topprioritymovie.com), which is premiering at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on May 16, 2012.

Top Priority: The Terror Within, a documentary film by Fleur De Lis Film Studios, features the story of Julia Davis, a former federal officer of the Department of Homeland Security, who was falsely accused of being a domestic terrorist. Julia fought and prevailed as a whistleblower, in spite of insurmountable odds. She now untangles the web of secrets, divulging the untold series of events that were never supposed to reach media outlets.

This groundbreaking documentary investigates issues that have ignited controversy within our nation, like the USA Patriot Act, and illegal and unethical tactics that are improperly used against law-abiding Americans. The authenticity of this documentary questions our national security processes and ultimately civil and women's rights. Top Priority: The Terror Within is slated to be the most widely recognized historical documentary of the year.

On July 4, 2004, Julia Davis reported a national security breach at the largest land border crossing in the U.S. and the world, of which the Department of Homeland Security failed to act on her reports. After hearing of highly suspicious entries of aliens from terrorist countries into the U.S. on July 4th of that year, the Department of Homeland Security opened a total of 54 investigations against Julia Davis, making her their top priority.

This stunning documentary, directed by Asif Akbar, exposes the anomalous degree of abuse under the guise of the PATRIOT Act in the case of Julia Davis. It details unprecedented retaliation by the Department of Homeland Security, perpetrated at the expense of American taxpayers, including land and aerial surveillance, wiretaps, OnStar tracking and other measures implemented against Julia and her family.

Top Priority: The Terror Within contains actual footage of the Blackhawk helicopter/ Special Response Team raid of the Davis home, videotaped witness statements and extensive court records. After years of litigation, Julia Davis, vindicated, now speaks out informing the public of her epic phenomenon. She currently serves as a National Security/Anti-Terrorism Expert and legal expert witness in employment issues, alongside the most prominent truth-tellers with the National Whistleblowers Center in DC.

The premiere of Top Priority: The Terror Within will take place on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, CA.

New Documentary Explores Brittany Murphys Untimely Death

On November 10, 2011 Brittany Murphy would have celebrated her 34th birthday. Instead, this day marks yet another painful reminder of her sudden death. Britt stole our hearts in Clueless, broke our hearts in Girl, Interrupted, stunned us with her talent for drama in Dont Say a Word, entertained and dazzled us in Just Married, King of the Hill and Happy Feet. Britts life sparkled with endless potential. Her shocking death continues to be darkened by lingering questions.

This year brings a promise of unraveling the mystery of Brittanys untimely demise. Fleur De Lis Film Studios recently announced an upcoming book, Britt that is being co-written by Brittanys father, Angelo Bertolotti and Julia Davis. The book will shed the light on his daughters childhood, her meteoric rise to fame and tragic circumstances leading up to her death. Bertolotti and Davis also appear in the recently completed documentary film, The Terror Within that illuminates disturbing details of Brittanys last days.

A team of individuals involved in the project are determined to continue pursuing every lead in Brittanys story, leaving no stone unturned. Brittany never hesitated to help others and stand up for whats right. We will make sure that her memory isnt tainted by false accusations any longer. Brittany was needlessly terrorized and slandered in life, but even in death her voice wont be silenced. We wont allow that to happen, said Julia Davis.

People may think they know what happened to my daughter, but they will be shocked to learn what really happened to Britt, added Angelo Bertolotti. The official version of the events is much different from the facts that remained in the dark until now, he asserts.

One of the little-known facts about Brittany Murphy is her participation as a witness in Julia Davis litigation against the Department of Homeland Security. After Brittany bravely provided a written statement in support of Julia Davis, she was targeted by the DHS/ICE. This included helicopter surveillance, wiretaps, an arrest in the middle of the night and an unsuccessful attempt to deport Brittanys fiancée Simon Monjack, whom she later married.

Curiously, Brittany and Simon became subjects of a DEA investigation, an agency that was previously headed by Robert Bonner. As a former Commissioner of the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, Bonner was personally involved in the matter of Julia Davis v. Department of Homeland Security. The government was clearly using and abusing all the tools at their disposal to terrorize witnesses.

In her career, Brittany Murphy portrayed unusual characters and colorful lives. Her own life and death turned out to be much stranger than fiction. There is a lot to be revealed about Brittanys romances, fears, betrayals and overwhelming forces that have irreparably shattered her promising life. The Terror Within and Britt strive to fill in the blanks, pulling down the covers from the unfinished canvas of Brittany Murphys life; interrupted, but never forgotten.

Facebook for dummies

During an instant message chat with a friend, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg infamously boasted about obtaining all kinds of information because people just submitted it. They trust me dumb f***s, wrote Zuckerberg. Years later, this in your face approach continues to escalate. Facebook isnt merely content to obtain the information people are willing to divulge of their own accord. Like a budding monstrosity from The Little Shop of Horrors, information-thirsty Venus Facetrap cajoles customers into providing more data than any social network in history ever aimed to acquire.

911 troubling facts about 9/11

Part I - Saudisturbing - Whos behind 9/11

1. 15 of the 19 9/11 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia and Osama Bin Laden himself was Saudi-born.

2. In the days following 9/11, with the blessing of George W. Bush, at least six private jets and nearly two dozen commercial planes carried the Saudis and the Bin Ladens out of the U.S. In all, 142 Saudis, including 24 members of the Bin Laden family, were allowed to leave the country. At least one private plane flew to pick up Saudi nationals while private flights were still grounded. The White House denied the very existence of that flight for years, until they finally revealed some of its details in response to a request from the 9/11 Commission.

3. Former Counterterrorism Chief Richard Clarke testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 3, 2003 and stated in part: It is true that members of the Bin Laden family were among those who left. We knew that at the time. I can't say much more in open session, but it was a conscious decision with complete review at the highest levels of the State Department and the FBI and the White House.

4. In 2002, the Congress noted that Saudi links to 9/11 are not being adequately explored.

5. In 2003, Los Angeles Times reported that the classified pages were kept out of a congressional report about 9/11. They demonstrated that the Saudi government not only provided significant money and aid to the suicide hijackers, but also allowed hundreds of millions of dollars to flow to Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups through suspect charities and other fronts.

6. A U.S. official who has read the document said that it describes "very direct, very specific links" between Saudi officials, two of the San Diego-based hijackers and other potential co-conspirators "that cannot be passed off as rogue, isolated or coincidental."

Californias green company costs taxpayers lots of green, raided by the FBI

Things are not so sunny at the solar firm Solyndra in Fremont, California. On September 8, 2011, the companys headquarters were raided by the FBI with multiple search warrants. It was funded through an Energy Department loan program as one of 40 alternative energy projects that were expected to create about 60,000 jobs. After receiving over 90% of its $535 million in stimulus Obamabucks and over $1 billion dollars from private investors, Solyndra laid off 1,100 workers and filed for bankruptcy. Under the terms of the $784 million dollar bankruptcy filing, private investors would be first in line to collect the debts from the failed company, ahead of the American taxpayers. Less than two months before the company filed for bankruptcy, Solyndra's CEO, Brian Harrison met with members of the Congress, assuring them that the company was in a strong financial position and in no danger of failing.

The war over the web

Corruption hates exposure. Power prefers to go unchallenged. The Internet has become one of the most powerful tools at the disposal of truth tellers, truth seekers and whistleblowers. Print publications are losing money and shifting their content from print to digital. The Internet has become the new battleground where the government, the mainstream media and big businesses fight to re-establish their dominance. They jointly strive to control the online content and its sharing, location and usage tracking and as well as Internet commerce. To put it simply, the government wants to contain its critics, the mainstream media wants to knock out the alternatives and big enterprises would like to suffocate small online businesses. Lobbying the legislature is an expensive luxury that is infinitely more accessible to the rich and powerful. Money begets more money and power shares nothing without demand.

Hollywood Producer William Fay: The Man Behind 300 and Clash of the Titans

My interview with Bill Fay - Producer of Clash of the Titans, 300, "Independence Day" and other notable feature films.

The remake of the cult film Clash of theTitans smashed opening weekend records, bringing in an estimated $61.4 million in sales over three days. The film kept its No. 1 spot at the box office two weekends in a row, bringing in a total of $110.5 million.

Were very proud of the film and its success, domestically and worldwide, said William Fay, executive producer of Clash of the Titans and president of production at Legendary Pictures. We had the opportunity to sit down for lunch with the renowned Hollywood producer, to discuss some of the emerging technologies in Hollywood and how they are changing the landscape.

During our visit with Fay, he confirmed that there would be a sequel to Clash of the Titans. Legendary Pictures has multiple titles in various stages of production and development, he told us. Currently, a sequel is in the works for Clash Of The Titans and is planned for a release date in April 2012. Were not planning on slowing down anytime soon, he said. For Fay, success seems to come with every release hes involved with. Over the years, he has produced blockbusters such as 300, Independence Day, Superman Returns, and The Patriot, to name a few.

"Independence Day" was, without a doubt, an unforgettable experience, Fay commented. We produced it with a group of friends and colleagues, working as a team through trial and error. The film was made for $65 million and had a box office return of $815 million dollars worldwide.

We asked Fay about the advantages and disadvantages of filming using green screens. Some actors have described their use as somewhat isolating and lonely. Clash of the Titans and 300 set new trends in filmmaking. 300 was done almost exclusively in a warehouse in Montreal, with only one scenethe messengers arrival on a horsefilmed as an exterior shot outside of the warehouse. Green technology is challenging to actors. They have to create images in their mind with only a prop to suggest the presence of a figure or physical threat to react or respond to.

They have to adapt, as this is the new trend and way of the future. In the process, new ways have been developed to help actors in fully visualizing the scene on a display that shows the storyboard and its actual [and fictitious] participants. This process is making it more realistic and easier for actors to adapt to, he responded. Unlike 300, Clash of the Titans had a lot of on-location shooting on the island of Tenerife, which is part of the Canary Islands and is south of Morocco. Other locations included Ethiopia and Wales. As we continue to follow Fays projects with great interest and anticipation, we'll look forward to his continued success at the box office.

The Great Pretender

For the longest time, Robert MacLean was hailed as a national hero. He was paraded around by the Government Accountability Project (GAP) and the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) as one of the most important whistleblowers of our generation. The mainstream media published a multitude of articles about MacLean and the horrors he faced for blowing the whistle. GAP and POGO called MacLean a prime example of the federal whistleblower experience. Lawmakers rallied to join the outpouring of support, praising his heroic actions. MacLean declared that as the result of his firing by the Department of Homeland Security, he was destitute, in desperate need of a job and on the verge of bankruptcy. His case sounded like the prototype of a heartbreaking whistleblower story. Trouble is, much of it simply wasnt true.

Here Comes the Bride of Frankenstein

Throughout their travails, whistleblowers were made vulnerable to the onslaught of corruption by the monstrosity known as the Whistleblower Protection Act (WPA). According to one of WPAs key proponents, Tom Devine of the Government Accountability Project (GAP), the bill has become a disastrous trap that hurt whistleblowers, instead of helping them. Devine testified: the WPA is like my professional baby. I spent four years devoted to its unanimous passage in 1989, and another two years for unanimous 1994 amendments strengthening the lawand my baby grew up to be Frankenstein. Instead of creating safe channels, it degenerated into an efficient mechanism to finish off whistleblowers.

WPAs Mary Shelley, Tom Devine, is now laboring to breathe life into the Bride of Frankenstein. Meet the WPEA (Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act), a bill S. 743 that is now pending in Senate. While the whistleblowers desperately lack adequate protection under the law, the WPEA fails to meet that need.

Former head of OSC Scott Bloch gets off scott-free

Hundreds of whistleblowers betrayed by the disgraced former head of the Office of Special Counsel (OSC), Scott Bloch, were conflicted about his recently imposed 30-day prison sentence. It was too light of a punishment, but it seemed better than nothing. However, aided and abetted by government prosecutors and a federal judge, Bloch managed to avoid serving any part of that sentence. On August 3, 2011, Chief U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth allowed Bloch to withdraw his guilty plea.

Case Update: Former FBI Agent Edward Preciado Convicted for Murdering Kimberly Long

Hammered in Vegas
Detectives followed a trail that traversed the kitchen, then continued across the dining room and through the hallway. The bloody footprints faded noticeably with each step up the staircase. More bloody footprints led to the outside of the garage. These trails would later lead the detectives to hidden evidence.

The rising garage door revealed Jeffrey Preciados father, covered in his victims blood. Former FBI agent Edward Preciado-Nuño stood over the lifeless body of Kimberly Ann Long. The 31-year-old mother lay in a pool of blood on the cold garage floor. Two bloody claw hammers were on the floor nearby. Staring at the detectives, Preciado-Nuño said, She hit me with a hammer, so I hit her back. The smaller hammer allegedly used by Kimberly was found beside her left hand. She was right-handed.

Preciado-Nuño has been sentenced to 8 to 20 years in prison for slaying Kimberly Long. Outrageously, his attorney, Tom Pitaro, asked the judge to sentence Preciado-Nuño to probation, because of his career in the FBI.

Strange sighting over Yucca Valley puzzles locals

Unusual circular lights hovered over the city of Yucca Valley, California for 10 minutes on July 21, 2011 from 10:33 PM until 10:43 PM. In a dark desert sky, the glowing orbs remained at approximately the same altitude the entire time they were visible. It appeared as though they were slightly moving to align with each other.

These unidentified reddish-orange orbs conjured up images of the 1997 "Phoenix Lights" sighting, featured by the History Channel, although they appeared in a different configuration.

Brushfire with Julia: The Saudi States of America

Money makes the world go round. Whose money spins your planet?  In recent decades, Saudi Arabia emerged as a skillful puppeteer, pulling the strings of its expanding influence. Dare to see the big picture, out of the context of pseudo-political loyalties, free of the intoxicating opiate of the mainstream media. Look behind the mask of false pretenses to see the awful truth: riches seeking ever more money, celebrity looking for more notoriety, propaganda masquerading as the truth and the deprivation of liberties posturing as the savior in the war on terror.
To uncover who is truly in control, all you have to do is follow the money.

Brushfire with Julia: Whats Good for the Goose May Prove Disastrous for Murdoch

Mainstream media is up in arms over the latest revelations in the ever-growing Murdoch scandal. In a firestorm of outrage, reporters are screaming at the top of their lungs about stunning privacy violations. Members of Congress passionately demand that everyone responsible be investigated and prosecuted. In his letter to FBI Director Mueller, Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, had cited reports that News of the World journalists attempted to obtain phone records of victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 through bribery and unauthorized wiretapping.

He also cited reports that the reporters had solicited a New York police officer to gain access to the content of private phone records of the 9/11 victims. The NYPD does not intend to conduct an investigation into these shocking allegations. Theyre leaving it up to the federal authorities, even though accusations of bribery against one of its own would certainly be within the police departments purview. Ironically, the FBI has been aware of News Corps criminal misconduct for years, but elected not to pursue it until now.

Brushfire with Julia: Freedom to Withhold Information

In theory, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) guarantees the legal right of the American public to obtain federal agency records. Judicially enforceable, FOIA was designed to ensure public access to Executive Branch records. The U.S. Supreme Court has statedthat FOIAs purpose is to ensure an informed citizenry, vital to the functioning of a democratic society, needed to check against corruption and to hold governors accountable to the governedIn practice, FOIA morphed into a monstrosity that not only denies citizens their right to obtain information, but causes some of the requesters to become targets of investigations.

"Suddenly it all comes down, all at once. You see what you are, what you have done, or, more accurately, what you haven't done, (for that was all that was required of most of us: that we do nothing). You remember the occasions in which maybe if you had stood others would have stood too. You remember everything now, and your heart breaks. Too late. You are compromised beyond repair."

Documentary feature The Terror Within Shatters the Veil of Secrecy

4th of July marks an anniversary of a national security threat reported by Department of Homeland Security whistleblower

Julia Davis with Angelo Bertolotti and Alex Ben Block

For Immediate Release:

Friday, July 1, 2011

One of the Department of Homeland Securitys best kept secrets was publicly unveiled for the first time during the VIP screening of the documentary feature film, The Terror Within. It tells the story of a national security whistleblower, Julia Davis, who reported improper processing of aliens from countries with terrorist ties (Special Interest Countries) admitted into the U.S. on 4th of July, 2004. In retaliation for her disclosure that embarrassed the Department of Homeland Security, Julia Davis was subjected to acts of retaliation of unprecedented proportions.

Documents found in Osama Bin Ladens lair confirmed that 4th of July was in fact the date of planned terrorist attacks against the United States by members of Al Qaeda. Penetration of the U.S./Mexico borders by terrorists remains a major threat.

Instead of addressing the problem that was courageously reported by Julia Davis to the FBIs Join Terrorism Task force (FBI/JTTF), Department of Homeland Security made her the target of 54 investigations, land, aerial and vehicular surveillance, two malicious prosecutions and two false imprisonments. Julia Davis was vindicated, obtained a court ruling of factual innocence and prevailed in her litigation against the Department of Homeland Security. For years, these sensational events have been suppressed from coverage by the mainstream media.

The Terror Within is jam-packed with actual footage of the Blackhawk helicopter/Special Response Team raid of the Davis residence, videotaped accounts of witnesses and perpetrators, as well as extensive evidence obtained from court records. Amidst many shocking revelations, this documentary film reveals Brittany Murphys involvement as a witness in Julia Davis case, which caused the star and her significant other to be targeted by the DHS/ICE. Brittanys father, Angelo Bertolotti, attended the screening and the reception. The Terror Within provides the missing piece of the puzzle with respect to the events leading up to Brittany Murphys tragic death.

Noted industry and media professionals were in attendance for this exclusive preview, including Alex Ben Block (Senior Editor of The Hollywood Reporter), John D. Schofield (Producer of Academy Award winning films Jerry McGuire, As Good As It Gets, Ali), Roger Burlage (co-creator of Lionsgate), Alan L. Gansberg, MA (the Dean of Columbia College Hollywood).

Stephen Kohn, Executive Director at the National Whistleblowers Center (NWC) was also in attendance and expressed his outrage at the magnitude of retaliation in the Julia Davis case.
Against all odds, weve managed to prevail in the court of law, said Julia Davis. Now its time for trial in the court of public opinion the greatest court of all. Criminal abuses and civil rights violations under the color of law have to be exposed to make sure this doesnt happen to you.

"If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry."

Girl, Interrupted - Who Terrorized Brittany Murphy

Since her childhood, Brittany Murphy was determined to change the world. The rollercoaster of her life peaked to dizzying heights and fell to devastating lows. Brittany undoubtedly had the It factor and wasnt the kind to take No for an answer. She had it all impeccable comedic timing, a talent for drama, unique beauty, voice of an angel and a fearless commitment to telling the story. The only story she didnt get to tell was her own.

Brittany Murphys unexpected death stunned the world. Her departure was followed by the hauntingly similar demise of her husband, Simon Monjack. In life and death, they were plagued by rumors and vicious innuendos. Hidden in plain sight, one piece of the puzzle was missing until now.

Everyone following Brittany Murphys life and career has heard of the controversy surrounding her marriage to British national, Simon Monjack. It was suggested that the rushed marriage was prompted solely by Monjacks immigration troubles. No one explained why the Department of Homeland Security had such an interest in deporting a live-in fiancée of a movie star. In reality, an expired visa was only a pretext for attacking a witness in an incredible case - so outlandish that it surpassed fictional exploits of sensational Hollywood characters. The truth is indeed stranger than fiction.

A new documentary feature, The Terror Within, shows that things arent always what they seem. A traffic stop is not always about an infraction, an attempted deportation is not always about a visa and telling the truth can prove deadly. It did for Brittany Murphy. Many knew that in her last days, this fragile beauty was under a lot of stress. Only a few realized the inordinate extent of the burden placed upon her shoulders - the terror of being stalked, the humiliation of being called paranoid, the paralyzing dread of what might happen next. Before the darkness of death descended upon Brittany and Simon, the light was systematically extinguished from their lives.

Their hesitation to discuss the topic of Simons immigration status was directly related to the sickening reality of being unfairly targeted by the Department of Homeland Security. Half of all illegal immigrants in the U.S. are visa overstays. Several of the 9/11 hijackers were here on expired visas. The Department of Homeland Security and its agency, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), proclaim that the priority of the DHS/ICE is apprehending criminal aliens, while millions of visa overstays mainly remain off-radar. ICE dedicates roughly 3% of its investigative workforce hours to investigating visa overstays.

What made Simon Monjack a priority for the DHS/ICE was not his immigration status. To the contrary, Simons arrest for his expired visa was merely a pretext for attacking Brittany. The Terror Within finally shows that the couple was intentionally targeted and ruthlessly pursued for refuting false representations by the DHS/ICE against a national security whistleblower. Brittany was dragged into the case of Julia Davis by a third party who immediately resigned from the DHS as soon as she was asked to be interviewed for the documentary. Brittany made a brave choice to tell the truth and paid a heavy price for doing the right thing.

Simon Monjack wasnt rich or famous. He didnt look anything like Ashton Kutcher. When he complained of being targeted by the DHS/ICE and getting severely abused in their custody, no one seemed to care. When Brittany and Simon said their phones were wiretapped and they were subjected to surveillance by helicopters, their fears were dismissed as vain eccentricities of a troubled movie star and her much-maligned soulmate. The Terror Within finally sheds the light upon an incredible true story that has been suppressed from being covered by the media until now. The VIP screening of the documentary will take place on June 28th, 2011. The truth is no longer a secret.

Not the kind of TRANSPARENCY we had in mind

As you get poked, groped and humiliated at the airport, it finally dawns on you this is not the kind of transparency we had in mind. Average Americans are unwittingly becoming more transparent with each passing day.

Were being told that the government needs to have full access to every aspect of our lives in a never-ending war on terror - just another cliché used to justify the unacceptable. The government can see what you read, whom you call, what you e-mail, where you drive. In our big brothers infinite wisdom, were not allowed to see what is being done behind closed doors in the name of the government of the people, by the people, for the people (at least that was the idea).

The current administration is even more intent on plugging the leaks than the last one. Theyve initiated more leak prosecutions than any other administration ever attempted. Ongoing cases include US Army PFC Bradley Manning (accused of releasing information to Wikileaks), Stephen Kim (accused of providing information to a television reporter); and Jeffrey Sterling (accused of passing classified information to author and New York Times reporter James Risen).

Leakers and whistleblowers are often incorrectly placed in the same category by the press. The main difference between the way the government approaches these two distinctly different groups is that leakers are prosecuted for their leaks to the media, while whistleblowers are usually attacked in more covert ways and accused of unrelated offenses as a pretext for retaliating against them through the use of our legal system that was supposed to protect them. They get transferred, demoted, reprimanded, accused of sexual offenses or misconduct and eventually fired, prosecuted, crushed. Very few come out intact on the other side of the whistleblower grinder, while the government cranks up the handle faster than ever.

The reason that would-be whistleblowers choose the route of leaking to the media in lieu of going through official channels is because theyre already aware that many Offices of Inspector General have become the Venus Flytraps akin to Mao Tse-tungs "Hundred Flowers" campaign. The agencies encourage people to come and complain only to identify and eradicate the troublemakers from their ranks.

The press tends to profile the leakers more often than whistleblowers. There seem to be two prevailing reasons for that: (1) leakers are often the sources for some of the best stories and (2) their stories are more straightforward, since theyre charged with offenses surrounding their disclosures. Retaliation against whistleblowers often morphs into completely unrelated accusations and prosecutions that on their surface are not related to their whistleblowing disclosure (but at heart are the very reason for the persecution in question). Those are more complex stories that are being left up to the authors and filmmakers to untangle, while the mainstream media concentrates on Weinergate, celebrity break-ups and similar trivial pursuits.

Being criminally prosecuted is one of the worst things that could be done to a whistleblower or a leaker. Not everyone can stand this kind of pressure, which is exactly why the government often chooses this mode of retribution. On June 9, 2011, Thomas Drake agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge to avoid the upcoming espionage trial. This will only further empower and embolden the government to criminally charge more leakers and whistleblowers.

Do they have any incentive to stop when our good government groups are behaving more like lapdogs than watchdogs? In March of 2011, Obama met quietly in the Oval Office with Danielle Brian of the Project on Government Oversight, Gary Bass of OMB Watch, Tom Blanton of the National Security Archive, Lucy Dalglish of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and Patrice McDermott of OpenTheGovernment.org. These groups have bestowed a Transparency Award upon President Obama, while in the same breath decrying this administrations lack of transparency.

As Glenn Greenwald aptly put it, It is not hyperbole to say that the Obama administration is waging an all-out war against transparency and whistleblowing (and the transparency groups who obsequiously awarded Obama a transparency award [one accepted in secret] are as disgraceful as the five Norwegians who awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize...)

Five Norwegians who awarded the Nobel Peace Prize have some semblance of an excuse, since it preceded the commencement of our intercontinental military adventures. Five advocacy groups who came up with the absurd Transparency Award (POGO, OMB Watch, National Security Archive, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and OpenTheGovernment.org) have no excuse whatsoever, since the undeserved prize actually followed the pattern of inexcusable behavior that should hardly be rewarded.

The government's responsiveness under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is widely considered a barometer of transparency. According to an analysis by the Associated Press, two years into its pledge to improve government transparency, the Obama administration took action on fewer FOIA requests from citizens, journalists, companies and others.

"Transparency promotes accountability and provides information for citizens about what their government is doing," Obama said when he took office." Of course, when the government doesnt want you to know what its doing, the only transparency you can count on is your own.
