Senators Call for Report on U.S. Mission Attacks

On September 14, Senators Jim DeMint (R-SC) and Bob Corker (R-TN), both members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations,  introduced S. 3551, a bill requiring investigations into a report on the September 11-12, 2012, attacks on U.S. missions in Libya, Egypt, and Yemen. The bill, which condemns the attacks, would require President Obama to submit a report on the recent embassy and consulate attacks within 30 days. Additionally, it requires the Secretary of State to submit recommended security procedure changes at U.S. embassies and consulates within 90 days.

In a press release, Senator DeMint suggested that “there may even have been warnings beforehand,” adding that “Americans need to know if we were properly prepared and what steps must be taken to protect our diplomats in these dangerous environments.” Senator Corker added the hope that “this tragedy results in an opportunity for us to learn from these events and ensure we’re doing all we can to protect the brave Americans serving in diplomatic posts in dangerous parts of the world.” The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations for review.
