NEW DELHI, October 5 (RIA Novosti) - A North Korean ship heading for Pakistan was detained and searched by the Indian coast guard, Press Trust of India reported on Monday.

The Hyang Ro dropped anchor in Indian waters without permission on Sunday. The ship's captain told authorities the vessel was forced to anchor in order to fix a leak in its fuel compartment.

"The vessel entered Indian waters without the mandatory clearances from the authorities," Indian Naval spokesman Roy Frances was quoted by Press Trust of India as saying.

India's coast guard searched the vessel and found nothing illegal being shipped on board and it was released to follow its course to Karachi, Pakistan.

The UN Security Council in June toughened old sanctions against North Korea and imposed new ones following Pyongyang's unauthorized nuclear test May 25.

The fifteen Council members supported resolution 1874 which in particular expands the arms embargo and allows searches of the nation's ships on high seas, but does not authorize use of force.
