Population  9,650 (2000 SIL), increasing. US Census (2000) lists 7,005 who use the language in the home. Ethnic population: 9,651.
Region  New Mexico, south McKinley County Reservation, south of Gallup.

Classification  Language isolate
Language use  Some children raised to speak the language (1998). Slowly shifting to English. Used in traditional tribal council meetings. Zuni is used exclusively in all Zuni religious ceremonies, occasionally in religious services. Mainly adults. Positive attitude. Few, if any, monolinguals (2000). Schools in English.
Language development  Literacy rate in L1: Below 1%. Literacy rate in L2: 75%–100%. Some study of oral and written Zuni in primary school. Radio programs. Bible portions: 1941–2007.
Writing system  Latin script.
Comments  Jewelry making; government workers. Traditional religion.
