District 9 Blu-ray to Include God of War III Demo

Just the other day we got ahold of the artwork and specs for the December 29th DVD and Blu-ray release of District 9 (see them here). But one item was missing from the story: The Blu-ray will include a playable demo of the PlayStation 3 game God of War III, which comes out in 2010.

According to Home Media Magazine, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment America have joined forces to release the first movie and game demo hybrid.

"The combination of District 9 and the game demo of God of War III is an unprecedented home entertainment offering," said Lexine Wong, senior EVP of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. "We are thrilled to give consumers not only an incredible high-definition presentation of District 9 and the wealth of bonus material about the movie, but also a taste of what is destined to be the biggest video game of 2010. This pairing of the movie and game demo is just another example of what is possible with the Blu-ray format."

"Blu-ray functionality has long been a differentiator that separates the PS3 from other home entertainment systems," said Peter Dille, SVP of marketing and PlayStation Network for SCEA. "Through this collaboration with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, we’re able to create a unique experience only available on the PS3 system that blends two of the most popular entertainment options available, watching District 9 and playing God of War III off the same disc."

From the official God of War III website, here's a synopsis of the game: God of War III will bring epic battles to life with stunning graphics and an elaborate plot that puts Kratos at the center of carnage and destruction as he seeks revenge against the Gods who have betrayed him. Set in the realm of brutal Greek mythology, God of War III is a single-player game that allows players to take on the climatic role of the ex-Spartan warrior, Kratos, as he scales through the intimidating heights of Mt. Olympus and the dark depths of Hell to seek revenge on those who have betrayed him. Armed with double-chained blades, and an array of new weapons and magic for this iteration of the trilogy, Kratos must take on mythology’s darkest creatures while solving intricate puzzles throughout his merciless quest to destroy Olympus.

Pointless in my opinion. If a game is to be released with a movie, at least make it relatable.

To me, it doesn't matter so much which game comes with which movie -- just the fact that Sony finally got smart and is realizing some of the potential of the PS3 is the real news. The system has so much potential that's been wasted up until now. I'm sure in time they'll get a little more savvy with the pairings.

Indeed. For a system whose tagline is "It only does EVERYTHING" Sony has been, it seems, the last to realize this.

I'm certain that they'll have GoW III's demo on the PS Store as a standalone as well...but DISTRICT 9 might just be the first BR I pick up.
