Does Bungie Hate Halo 2?

Amidst widespread reports of dissatisfaction with Halo 2, Bungie clears the air.

In Edge 171, the British magazine captured a snapshot of Bungie Studios, the team behind the Halo franchise. In that cultural polaroid, however, key members of the Bungie team were critical of the last project the studio shipped, Halo 2 (that game sold upwards of 8 million copies). Technical Lead, Chris Butcher, who Edge describes as "an energetic, sharp New Zealander and reputed 'boy genius'" blasts Halo 2 in the piece:

Even the multiplayer experience for Halo 2 is a pale shadow of what it could and should have been if we had gotten the timing of our schedule right. It's astounding to me. I fucking cannot play Halo 2 multiplayer. I cannot do it.
Disappointed with Halo 2?
Butcher's comments spawned a sea of stories throughout the blogosphere: "Bungie Says They Eff'd Up Halo 2;" "Bungie Laments Halo 2's Failures;" "Bungie Owns Up to Halo 2's Flaws;" "Bungie Admits Halo 2 Sucked;" Bungie: 'We Screwed Up' on Halo 2." Those stories and their respective headlines range from moderately accurate to borderline absurd.

Also in the Edge piece, Writer/Content Manager Frank O'Connor pointed out that the game's ending was underwhelming: "We drove off Thelma & Louise style." However, the studio being critical of its own work is nothing new to those who've followed Bungie. In their first Video Documentary (ViDOC), Jay Weinland and Marty O'Donnell were both critical of Halo 2's ending. O'Donnell said "We had such a great ending to Halo 2 (laughs) where Master Chief said 'I want to finish the fight.'" Weinland was less sarcastic: "[The ending] had most Halo players universally screaming and throwing their controllers at their TVs."

The case is there, does Bungie hate Halo 2? Are they looking back at their game unfairly? Is any backlash just a way to do subtle marketing and hype building for Halo 3? Decrying the last is one way to promise the next one will be better. Are Chris Butcher's comments being taken out of hand? Or is Bungie just that critical of their product. We spoke with Technical Lead Chris Butcher, Writer/Content Lead Frank O'Connor and Community Lead Brian Jarrard about the team's reaction to Halo 2 and the way it has been portrayed in the media recently.

Bungie Reacts to Bungie
"Does the Bungie team hate Halo 2? Nah, of course not," said Community Lead Brian Jarrard. "But after making so much progress on Halo 3 and specifically setting out to fix things that we felt were shortcomings of the last game, it's hard for many to see anything but the 'bad' parts of Halo 2 at this point."

"It's funny to read our team's own criticisms of Halo 2," O'Connor said. "I wonder what folks would have thought if we'd come out and said 'Halo 2 was a shimmering work of perfection that could not possibly improved in any way, shape or form.'"
When considering those criticisms, the first ones to look at are Butcher's remarks to Edge. The Technical Lead is a Networking-related perfectionist, and his comments about Halo 2 being unplayable had little to do with controls, gameplay or weapon balance but rather the foundation of technical framework the online experience was built on.

"For Halo 2 we had our sights set very high on networking," Butcher said. "We thought about the great LAN parties you can have with Halo 1 and decided to try and recreate that awesome experience of having all your buddies over to play, but using Xbox Live instead of having to lug consoles and televisions around. Going from having no Internet multiplayer to developing a completely new online model was a big challenge to tackle all at once, and as a result we had to leave a lot of things undone in order to meet the ship date commitment that we made to our fans."

The reflection going on at Bungie is necessary -- they are trying to improve on the last product they shipped. "The Bungie team has always been its own harshest critic and this constant self-critiquing and drive to continually outdo prior efforts is a huge part of our company culture," said Brian Jarrard. "And a big component of the Studio's success."

O'Connor added, "That internal criticism is being shoveled into the furnace of development like fuel."

The approach with Halo 3 pre-release is entirely different than how Bungie approached Halo 2. Where that game was shrouded in secrecy, Halo 3 is strangely media transparent. The number of available assets is still pretty minimal, but already, with likely 10 months to go before the game ships, Bungie has made alpha videos available via the ViDOC series. Each week they've been profiling a different element of Halo 3's universe at their official site and word is that there may be even more video content in the works.

All of that doesn't even mention the game's beta coming later this Spring. While there's still a great shroud of secrecy covering the game's single player, the studio has been lifting the veil on very specific parts of Halo 3's experience. For Bungie, the reflection and criticism comes naturally and while it's easy to take quotes out of context and attribute a single comment to an entire studio, O'Connor expects that ultimately people will be pleased: "I think everyone's going to enjoy the benefits of our reflective nature."

Bungie does not hate Halo 2, they just see its flaws(like the noob combo). If they did they would not report such fun times playing it at humpdays(I am not retarded, thats what they call it) and stuff. The fact is that after the games launch, like every other game manufacturer, they see the flaws in the game and try to make the sequel better. This is also the reason why they have pulled most of their team onto the creation Halo 3, and left a small team to create the new Halo 2 maps for the 360.

but I did! damn character restriction; Way too linear, every scene competing against each other (begining; although the opening city's first few minutes were great then it devolved; can't shoot the prophet had to punch it, WTF! Arbiter did nothing for me; the Brutes were underwhelming and looked rather silly; Seymour needs to return to the 'Little Petshop of Horror')

Totally, the future is much brighter beacuse humans have a tendency to learn. The Halo franchise has had a lot of impact on the gaming community, look at the comments this thing has had. about three pages, and it has no easy task to it. All 1up servers love or like a game, and that is everyone's downside. You can't say something bad about other games without looking at your game as "perfect." No game is PERFECT. As for me I love it, so as long as everyone starts to hope for a new beginning, someone has to start a negative opinion. As for the ending, all games that have a sequel have a surprise ending, look at GOW for those of you who have it. Looking at Halo 2, it was released about 3 to 4 years ago. It still has retailers selling it in the Xbox section and soon the PC section.

Totally, the future is brighter, humans have a tendency to learn. However you look at it, the Halo franchise had a big impact on the gaming community, and will still have. But it has inspired many other games, and all games have a flaw. not one game is a perfect. All people that are part of 1up love one game or another, I live and love the Halo franchise. Althought I'm not obssessed, people can't say bad things without looking at the game they love, perfectly. All games that have a sequel have a surprise ending, Gears of War's ending for those who have it. This game is special in some ways, and not so much in others, but always, always look up not down.

Bungie is clearly doing their best to Get their game in every video game website out there, even if it means talking about the Flaws of halo 2 and how they are going to change it, or talk about the assault rifle. Halo 3 is so hyped up, that most people n a 360 are going to be going head over heels to play the beta, and when it releases the cloud will no longer be there, and it will be a bit of disappointment. I am hyped up for this game like most gamers are, but Halo 3 has next to no chance of living up to the hype that microsoft and bungie have created. hell microsoft relied on this game last generation, this gen they have, bioshock, mass effect, I donno what else, but those games are not the games that sell the systems, they are the games that people with the system buy, but people will buy the system for halo 3 and gears of war, and when halo 3 gets released, i wouldn't be s¨rprised at all if it didn't live up to the hype. Thanks for your time and have a wonderful day! And fingers crossed for bungie and releasing the biggest game ever!

The most tedious and annoying part of Halo 2 was playing as the arbiter. I don't want to get to know the Covenant much less play as one. One problem with entertainment today is that writers feel that they have to spoon feed you. Whatever happened to imagination?? Note to writers: DON'T FLESH OUT VILLAINS!!! The less that's known about a villain, the more you can fear them. It's human nature to attach attributes you don't like to things you don't like. So in other words if you think that eating babies is a bad thing, you might tend to think that the Covenant eats babies and the Flood tortures babies before they eat them. You don't have to be told this by some hack writer. I don't want to know that the Covenant Elite talk in English with a British Accents (is John Davidson a Covenant Elite?). The enemies in Halo should be known by their brutal deeds, and not by their sob stories as to why they are who they are.

It was the FPS that ALL fans of the genre have waited for, for years. It came and it conquered. Saying you don't like it is like a handicapped person saying he doesn't like to play football, or a blind person saying he doesn't like porn. One more thing...PPPPPWWWWWWWNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!! Halo 1 was better than Halo 2 because there was better weapon balance and the game was so simplistic that anyone could pick up a controller and get right into the game, and the Arbiter wasn't a bad idea because you got the Covenant's side of the story, but it made them seem more human to a player than the aliens that they are.

It's like looking back on Super Mario Bros. after making Super Mario Bros. 3. A huge part of making a sequel is to improve on what was done in its predecessor. Looking back on a past game with what one is doing now doesn't mean the game was bad or that it sucks, just that what they're doing now makes it look bad. If anything, it's a bunch of developers getting really excited about what they're working on.

Just when I'd get into MC's story, I was jarred away by Arbiter. Then I'd get into his story...again...ripped from that story arc and back to MC's. It felts sloppy and I didn't like that I bought into the hype, only to be disappointed by a shell of a game. Bungie has a lot to prove this time around, and by the looks of it...perhaps they're on the right path.

I've played both the Halo's and I've always felt that they were "just okay". I don't get the obsession, and playing both sides of the fence in Halo 2 was annoying. The outdoor sequences are nice but the indoor parts are just boring, gray labyrinths (snooooze). I'm way more excited about games like Crysis and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. than Halo 3.

...Well Hexpane, Yes the campaign did suck but the multiplayer Was "AWESOME" and the only thing that kept Halo 2 from becoming a weekend rental. Sorry but any game you can beat in less than 10 hrs and has nothing else to offer is a rental in my opinion. later

Well, as many mistakes as they apparently made with Halo 2, roughly 1/3rd of the people on my floor in this dormatory are playing the game via LAN right now. Seriously. The game was a masterpiece, and yes, still had flaws. Like Gears of War and Zelda.

I'm so sure that Bungie is completely disappointed in their BEST selling game, and the most loved XBOX franchise in existence. This just in, you can be disappointed with certain aspects of a game and still love it. It's probably a case of "Everyone says Halo 1 is better" attitude. As the saying goes, you are your own worst critic. Bungie probably saw things that they wanted to have more time to perfect and just commented on them. This is in no way any indication that they "HATE" Halo 2, and that very headline could potentially cause an uproar. Luckily, nobody believes it. I mean come on, it's just common sense. Halo is the best selling franchise for the XBOX, I predict far worse lineups for Halo 3 than there were for Halo 2. Why would a game that creates such an effect be hated by the very company that made it and benefits most from it. I saw the news when Halo 2 launched. I know that people camped out at Future Shop, Best Buy, any store that would sell it, for hours before it launched. There was pushing and shoving, a store near my place had a fight break out. There's just no way.

only Luke Smith would make a huge fucking deal about someones OPINION on Halo. it's like calling his mother a whore and him writing an essay about it.

I never realized professional journalists could take something so out of proportion...wait...now that I think about it...lol anyways, thank you Luke for clearing this up. It's good though that Bungie is so critical of their games.

'Halo 2 was a shimmering work of perfection that could not possibly improved in any way, shape or form.' For some reason, this comment made me think of Ken Kutagari: '[PlayStation 3 is] a shimmering work of perfection that could not possibly improved in any way, shape or form.' ha ha only he wouldn't be critiquing it, he would be loving ALL OVER IT! lol

someone (the Technical Lead of the Halo franchise himself) has expressed (due) dissatisfaction with the (over)hyped sequel to one of the most (over)hyped games ever. let me find an umbrella...i think the sky's falling.
