Newhaven Port reveals how the Rampion wind farm will help secure its future

The arrival of the base of operations of the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm will mean the creation of two brand new buildings at Newhaven Port, kickstarting its regeneration.
This week Newhaven Port revealed that a brand new administration and engineering building would be built to house the administration and engeineering building.
The Port is hoping the selection of the town as the base of operations and maintenance for the major wind farm, will encourage other leading companies within the supply chain for the wind farm to relocate to the port, creating more jobs.
Newhaven Port manager Francois Jean said: “E.ON coming to Newhaven will create a cluster of opportunities in renewable and clean technology for local residents and companies.
“It demonstrates that NPP is working hard to deliver the Port Masterplan which will transform Newhaven over the next few years.”
An existing old warehouse will be replaced with the new base of operations and maintenance, while a new port authority building will be created too.
NPP has also started consulting with key stakeholders about a proposal to create a new heavy duty quay at the Southern end of the port.
This would support construction of the wind farm and transform the port’s ability to handle larger specialist supply and cargo vessels.
Attracting offshore wind companies to Newhaven was one of the key objectives of the port masterplan, which has been developed by the board of directors over the last three years in consultation with local councils and stakeholders.
NPP said the decision by E.ON to chose Newhaven for the maintenance and operations base showed the port has a clear future as a commercial port.
President of the Department of Seine Maritime in France, Didier Marie, said: “The decision is important for the local community and the port, offering new opportunities in terms of jobs, training and commercial activities.
“The significant efforts we have been making over the last eight years in improving the harbour, in maritime safety and investing in renovations, are finally paying off.
“We confirm our support for this project and our commitment to continuing the modernisation of the port.”
Newhaven was chosen by E.ON over Shoreham as the site for the wind farm after a detailed evaluation process which lasted more than 18 months.
Newhaven Port and Properties is the owner of Newhaven Port and is majority owned by the Department of Seine Maritime, a French county in northern France.
If granted planning permission, it is expected construction could start on the wind farm within the next three years.
