  • In the manner of the earlier "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" or the later "Tales Of The Unexpected", both of which were much more popular, this was an anthology series of odd, mysterious, gruesome or grimly comic stories, all introduced by Orson Welles.moreless

    The main reason for watching this expensive but short-lived series was, of course, Orson Welles, who came looming out of the shadows, clad in cape and broad-brimmed hat and emerging from clouds of cigar smoke, to introduce every story, reappearing at the end for a short wrap-up. These were always great fun, but the stories he introduced and finished off were very variable indeed. No expense was spared as to acting talent, with several stars from the US coming over for an episode as well as big British names. Stories by Somerset Maugham, Arthur Conan Doyle, Honore de Balzac and others were adapted for the series. Welles never appeared in any tale, and it is likely he took no more than a fortnight to film all his contributions. He is said to have directed most of these himself, but there have been whispers that a few of them were directed (also anonymously) by Peter Bogdanovich.moreless
