'Grey's Anatomy': Mercy West is in, Izzie Stevens is out

Izziefreakout
In Thursday night's "Grey's Anatomy," we finally met the enemy: Mercy West interns and residents stormed Seattle Grace.

I'll get this little rant over with right from the start: Why does Shonda Rhimes love to pit her doctors against one another? In the beginning the interns were fighting over surgeries. Then they fought over solo surgeries. Then they fought over specialties. There was even a storyline where the top surgeons in the hospital were grappling for the Chief's job like kindergarten kids fight over the coolest toy on the playground.

I'm sick of it! It's childish and they're compromising their patients. I rolled my eyes when Alex stole lab results in order to hijack a patient. It's such childish behavior. Someone send these people to the time-out chair, please.

Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about the Mercy West influx! Meredith compares them to multiplying bacteria in her voice-over intro, but I have to say, I kind of like the little germs.

I did find it absurd that the Mercy Westers were all dressed in orange scrubs. I realize that it was an attempt to set up a more obvious division, but really, did they think we wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the new doctors and the ones we've been watching for five years now? When the Seattle Grace residents watched in horror as the Westers swarmed the floor, it reminded me of that scene in "E.T." when the government agents descend on Elliot's house in their hazmat suits.

As if the orange scrubs weren't enough, each Seattle Grace doctor was paired with a Mercy West newbie. Let the games begin. Is this "Grey's Anatomy," or did I accidentally change the channel and land on MTV's latest "Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Emergency Room"?

It seemed as though they set Reed (Nora Zehetner) up to be the bad guy when she stole George's locker and refused to budge even after Izzie asked her to. Was I the only one who found it hard to sympathize with Izzie when she subsequently freaked out? I do miss George's presence on the show, and I understand that he was Izzie's best friend, but Izzie overreacted. As a doctor, she should be better equipped to cope with death. Plus, it's just a cubby. It's not like Reed parked her car on his grave and drew a mustache on his last photo.

One of my favorite Mercy Westers is intern April (Sarah Drew). I loved Drew on The WB's "Everwood," and I'm thrilled to see her again, in a very different role this time.  Her saccharine-sweet attitude and wide-eyed insincerity were hilarious, as was her super-mysterious hot pink notebook full of morale-boosting platitudes. Personally, as long as she's a good doctor and doing her job, I don't care what it takes for her to keep her self-esteem up during the day, whether it's a notebook or a nose-job.

Calliedad I was happy to see Callie's family story revisited. Last we saw Mr. Torres, Callie told him that she was in love with a woman and their once-strong relationship crumbled instantly. In Thursday night's episode, her father flew across the country with a priest and a handful of Bible quote flash cards.

Callie was furious when she discovered his intentions. "You think you can pray away the gay? You can't pray away the gay!" she shouted in the hospital waiting room. While it may not have been the most appropriate choice of locations for her exclamation, it's a pretty catchy turn of phrase. I expect to see that one on plenty of protesters' signs this year.

By far the best moment in this episode was Arizona's scene with Callie's father, Mr. Torres. Jessica Capshaw has an incredible ability to take even the most melodramatic of "Grey's" speeches and deliver them with a subtlety and an honesty that makes them come off as sincere instead of overwrought. "I was named for a battleship," she said, and in the powerful monologue that followed, she calmly and carefully explained that Callie was still the woman Mr. Torres raised. It was really beautiful.

And last, but certainly not least, we must address this episode's big "shocker." In the final moments, Chief Richard Webber fired Izzie Stevens.

I'm a big fan of Katherine Heigl and I'm sad to see her go, but Izzie deserved it this time. She's temperamental and she's not acting rationally. She's still recovering not only from the cancer treatment, but from the death of her best friend.

Izzie was shocked, initially assuming that she was being fired for having cancer. It turns out that her goof with the kidney patient -- a mistake she made, unsurprisingly, while her judgment was clouded by petty competition -- is what cost her her job.

"You let me come back after I cut an LVAD wire!" she shouts. Uh, maybe I'm wrong, but I'd guess that announcing your prior egregious errors of judgment while begging for your job is slightly counterproductive.

Chief begins to explain his decision, mentioning that other doctors had questions about her stamina and emotional stability -- among them her husband, Alex.

And thus, we come to the episode's true shocker. It was previously reported that Heigl would be taking a five-week leave of absence from "Grey's" to work on a movie and to bond with her newly adopted daughter, Naleigh, so Izzie's release from Seattle Grace was a given.

I wasn't expecting her to actually leave Karev, though -- and especially not in a hastily written note stuck on his locker. That's how you break up with your seventh-grade boyfriend, not the husband who stuck by your side through cancer (and creepy ghost-sex). Alex's reaction was the perfect mix of devastation and disbelief, as were Meredith's and Christina's.

I can't wait to see what kind of reception Izzie gets when she comes back in a few weeks.  A few days ago, Shonda Rhimes tweeted: "Things may happen, but [Alex and Izzie] are meant for each other. Remember that."  Hmmm.

What did you think of Dr. Stevens' dramatic exit? Did you think she deserved to be the first of our beloved residents to get the boot? Talk about it in the comments below. While you're at it, let me know what you thought of Arizona's speech and the bright orange Mercy West incursion.

Be sure to check back next week! I'm looking forward to seeing how Alex picks up the pieces. Is he going to stick it out in that bear-bait trailer all by himself?

What about Izzy patient clinic that was bought with the money denny left her surely she is tied to that.

I just wanted to say that I totally think that Meredith, Christina, and Alex should leave Seatle Grace. They should switch hospitals. The chief also sucks, I think it also sucks that Izzie got fired, but, to a certain extent, I can see why she did. And if Bailey, Sloan, Lexie, and especially Derek could switch hospitals with them, that would be better. The guy Izzie was paired with should have been punched in the mouth and fired. He was an ass. I'm really happy that Meredith is finally letting her blood-family into her life, but has Derek even stopped by to see how she is, yet? Izzie better not leave the show because it will suck with out two the main original cast. We already lost George, but I have to say that I was anticipating George. He kept getting pushed away from the group. First, he and Izzie "broke up" then Izzie got cancer and married Alex. He wouldn't even have been a part of the wedding unless Izzie started to waver and George walked her down the isle. Like I said, he was getting pushed away long before. I still really wish he wasn't dead. Lastly, if anyone else goes from Seatle Grace I sincerely think it will be Cristina because she is really sick of not being able to hold a heart and I wouldn't be surprised if she quit really soon. I think Mer would follow her and Derek would follow Mer and Mark would follow Derek and Lexie would follow Mark. And I don't think Alex will want to stick around after he figures out that Izzie left him because she got fired and she partially blames Alex. Stupid Chief!!!

So does the entire hospital not have one cardiothoracic surgeon? Burke and Hahn must have been on call 24/7; no wonder they left! Can't they import a heart surgeon from Mercy West now that the hospitals have merged? I really can't handle this particular nonsensical storyline.

Disappointing episode, ridiculous dialogue, too many speeches! Episode 2 (3 technically) got my hopes up for this season (Joan Rater was the writer on that one). Oh well, we Bears fans are used to weathering the storm...

@gail REALLY SERIOUSLY your disgusted by Callie and Arizona how is that even possible and saying two woman kissing all over eath other I dont know what show your watching because if the one you are watching has alot of Callie Arizona making out scenes then can you please tell me the name I would love to watch that show but in reality um greys has only had 4 kissing scenes and one after sex scene so I think your confused. I dont know how you can be so judgemental about a gay coupling its not wrong its not the end of the world they rnt hurting anybody so just back off and if you cant handle it then change the channel! I for one well not I love greys anatomy I always have and my two fav couples are Calzone and Mer and Der I think everyone can agree and Ive even heard the staff saying that the two couples are the same they have the same chemistry and passion I love them together I do think calzone is a better fit but I dont think that just because they are a gay couple it has nothing to do with the gender or the sexual orientation its the people in the relationship they are like two puzzle pieces that after 4 and a half seasons finally found their missing piece.

Additionally... So Izzy was fired. She'll be back in a few episodes. These writers can't ever stick with a decision. People can't even die on this show without coming back to life (Meredith, Izzy, a bunch of minor characters who bop around in the hereafter). In this way they've ruined any chance of ever doing anything dramatic.

Not the actors' faults. They have to use what they're given. I didn't give a crap about George's death, but I still enjoyed Ellen Pompeo's Luke Skywalker scream.

I only watch Grey's anymore to sustain me in between new House episodes, whereas back in the good old days, my big burly uebermale coworkers would watch with me!

Grey's Anatomy is just not the same without Izzie and George. I mean I've been watching this show for the last 5 years and so far this season hasn't been that great. I mean with the new people from the other hospital coming and the leaving of two beloved cast members sucks. I hope the season gets better but as of now it really sucks....

wow I'm sick of homophobes like erica stephens, ok i understand how you're sick of the childishness in the storyline, and izzie (even though I think a empathetic person would understand her and not judge her or other people like her). but what does the gay couple have to do with any of this? I'm applying to medical schools now. I already got into a top 10 school a few days ago. I sure hope that there won't be any homophobes like you at my "teaching hospital." They are just a real storyline of real people. no fake drama. You disgust me erica

talking about how hard it is to be gay isn't "whining"

I thought Arizona's speech was the best part of the episode. Especially when she told the story of her coming out to her father and he asked "Are you still the person I raised you to be?". I nearly cried lol I am glad to know that Izzy isnt permanently gone though and I'm looking forward to her dramatic return. In the mean time poor Alex and Boo Mercy West! :D

who is the cute intern with the pretty eyes? real name

I love nora, she's ultimately a great actress and that's what they need on the show.

Reed is the best new character there is. I mean there has been nobody controversial in so long, it would be a huge mistake to drop her.

I'm starting to see Alex share a lot with nora zehetners character and this really upsets me...I see where this is going. I just want Izzie to come back already.

Best season in my opinion. Not a huge fan of the Mercy Westers but I'm sure they'll grow on us or be written out.
As for Callie and Arizona, right now it's the best part of the show. Such a realistic relationship. I am loving that the writers have thought to put these two together. I wasn't a huge fan of the couple at first, just never really paid much attention and then all of a sudden I found myself enjoying their chemistry as much if not more then all the other couples. I know some will agree and some won't, but I think Callie and Arizona could rival MerDer. Loved the Good Man in a storm speech. She was honest and just said what she felt. She has a way with delivering what needs to be said with grace. Thank you writers for a wonderful season!!

i thought izzy died at the end of last season with george i mean she did die they showed it they even had alex being the greiving husband and all so whats up how did she get to come back alive like that but i guess it is tv so it can happen but how did she come back to life is what i want to know

the chief and izzy need to stay.

the mercy thing isn't mercy. that is the message. you can downsize good people.
that is the way. i am thinking that creepy new guy who set izzy up in a small way could have even compromised the records that izzy then ordered the test from.
the air of cut throat competition among drs. sucks. I am glad it got the boot in part of the dialogue. and bring it on the truth of love with Arizona and dad renouncing his hate thinking it love for his daughter who love a woman. yeah, that part is the medicine of last night.
