One of Scotland’s most eminent universities has denied treating English students as a “cash cow” despite offering them more places than their Scottish peers for the first time.

Edinburgh University has so far offered 4,996 English applicants a place, more than double last year’s total, after SNP ministers allowed them to charge school leavers from the rest of the UK £36,000 for a degree.
