Date: Wednesday, May 17, 2006, 2:40pm MST - Last Modified: Wednesday, May 17, 2006, 2:42pm MST

Arizona State University Wednesday named Elizabeth Capaldi, vice chancellor and chief of staff for the State University of New York system, as its new provost and executive vice president.

Capaldi succeeds Milt Glick, who is leaving ASU to become president of the University of Nevada, Reno. She will assume her new post in August.

"Betty Capaldi has the academic standing, creative energy and analytically based administrative experience to take on the complex task of being university provost of ASU," said ASU President Michael Crow.

As ASU's chief academic officer, Capaldi will provide leadership to all of the university's campuses and academic programs. She will also represent the university to external agencies and constituencies and be part of ASU's fundraising initiatives.

"The energy and positive attitude of all I met at ASU attracted me to join the team," Capaldi said. "I look forward to working with President Crow and the faculty, staff and students to continue to improve academic quality and student success."

Capaldi received her bachelor's degree from the University of Rochester, and her Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. In addition to contributing more than 65 chapters and articles to the scientific literature, Capaldi co-authored three editions of an introductory psychology textbook, and edited two books on the psychology of eating.

She has been honored with the title of fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and she has served as president of the American Psychological Society.
