• Van Nistelrooy spent the first few years of his career in the Dutch second tier at Den Bosch before an impressive 13-goal debut Eredivisie campaign with Heerenveen prompted a transfer to PSV.

• Scored 60 league goals in his first two campaigns at PSV, topping the Eredivisie scoring charts on each occasion and forming a brilliant partnership with Belgian Luc Nilis; a British-record €30m move to Manchester United was delayed a year by serious knee injury, taking place in 2001 rather than 2000.

• Made up for lost time at Old Trafford, top-scoring with 25 goals in the club's 2002/03 Premier League triumph and scooping the UEFA Champions League top-scorers' prize three times in four years, with a tournament-record tally of 12 in 2002/03; in so doing he became United's all-time record scorer in Europe with 38 goals, overtaking Denis Law.

• Awarded his first cap for the Netherlands in November 1998 against Germany, he made his belated major tournament bow at UEFA EURO 2004, scoring four goals in his first three games; managed one goal at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and two at UEFA EURO 2008.

• Left United for Real Madrid in 2006 and claimed Pichichi award with 25 goals as the club regained the Spanish title; added a second title in 2008 before injury and a departure for Hamburg in January 2009.

• After his contract with the Bundesliga club expired, Van Nistelrooy was tempted back to Spain on a one-year deal in June 2011 by ambitious Málaga.
