*** Throwing the kitchen sink: In boxing, you know one fighter is trailing in points when, in the final rounds, he throws everything he can to land a knockout blow against his opponent. The same is largely true in presidential politics. And so yesterday while campaigning in Ohio, we saw Mitt Romney and his team try to throw the kitchen sink at President Obama. Yes, he did touch on the economy. ("I was surprised in the president’s speech at the Democrat convention he didn’t mention unemployment. He didn’t mention 47 million people on food stamps.”) But what was striking was his focus on issues other than the economy -- such as trying to make hay out of last week’s Democratic platform snafu, although he dropped his coins/currency line. (“If I become president of the United States, I will not take God out of my heart, I will not take God out of the public square, and I will not take it out of the platform of my party.") What’s more, his campaign seized on the teacher strike in Chicago. (“President Obama has chosen his side in this fight, sending his vice president last year to assure the nation’s largest teachers union that ‘you should have no doubt about my affection for you and the president’s commitment to you,’” he said in a statement.) And the campaign used the Woodward book to argue that Obama can’t lead.
*** Romney camp: “Every day and everywhere we go, we talk the economy”: The Romney campaign contends that its main argument is still the economy, pointing to its new round of economic-focused TV ads. “Every day and everywhere we go, we talk the economy,” a Romney official tells First Read. In addition, the campaign explains that Team Obama talks a lot about other issues, too (like abortion, Planned Parenthood, national security). But when you’re behind after the conventions -- as both Gallup and CNN polls find -- the emphasis on other issues (God, the Chicago strike, Woodward) seems to come from a position of weakness rather than strength.
*** New WaPo/ABC poll shows the race essentially tied: That’s why the new Washington Post/ABC poll couldn’t have come at a better time for the Romney campaign, because it counters the emerging C.W. that Obama is beginning to pull away after the conventions. “The survey shows that the race remains close among likely voters, with Obama at 49 percent and Romney at 48 percent, virtually unchanged from a poll taken just before the conventions,” the Washington Post writes. “But among a wider sample of all registered voters, Obama holds an apparent edge, topping Romney at 50 percent to 44 percent, and has clear advantages on important issues in the campaign when compared with his rival.”
*** Is it enough to stop the conservative handwringing? The Washington Post/ABC poll also couldn’t have come soon enough because it might help stop -- for now -- some of the handwringing we’re seeing from prominent conservatives. John Podhoretz writes that the Romney camp is “too intent on winning over the small batch of uncommitted and independent voters by saying absolutely nothing that might possibly offend them. The problem with that strategy is a) it means he doesn’t say much, and b) it does nothing to stimulate the enthusiasm of those already in his corner.” Byron York adds, “Republican nervousness is spreading and threatens to turn into a stampede. For months, GOP strategists have told themselves that no president since World War II has been re-elected with an unemployment rate above 7.2 percent. But some are beginning to wonder: What if Obama can do it?” And here was Laura Ingraham yesterday: "If you can't beat Barack Obama with this record, then shut down the party. Shut it down. Start new, with new people."
*** Cook piles on: But it’s not just conservatives. Check out today’s column from political analyst Charlie Cook. “It is becoming clear that if President Obama is reelected, it will be despite the economy and because of his campaign; if Mitt Romney wins, it will be because of the economy and despite his campaign.” More Cook: “The Romney campaign made the extraordinary decision to not try seriously to connect their candidate with voters on a personal level until their convention. As dubious as that decision was, they were rewarded by having a convention shortened by a day due to a hurricane, then compounded the error of waiting until the convention by putting much of what was most needed to be seen in the 8 and 9 p.m. hours, when the only viewers would be C-SPAN fans. Wow! The biographical film and the testimonials of people whose lives had been touched by Romney were powerful, necessary, and largely unseen.”
*** Remembering 9/11: President Obama (with the first lady) holds a moment of silence at the White House at 8:46 am ET, and then (with Defense Secretary Panetta) delivers remarks at the Pentagon at 9:30 am ET. Later in the day, the president heads to Walter Reed Hospital to visit with wounded soldiers… Vice President Biden is in Shanksville, PA… And Mitt Romney, in Reno, NV, addresses the National Guard Association at 2:15 pm ET. Romney already released this statement: “Today we again extend our most profound gratitude to our brave troops who have gone into battle, some never to return, so that we may live in peace. On this most somber day, those who would attack us should know that we are united, one nation under God, in our determination to stop them and to stand tall for peace and freedom at home and across the world.”
*** And remembering 9/15, too: While we’re focused on today’s remembrance, don’t lose sight of another anniversary this week -- the Sept. 15, 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers. It’s worth noting that the retrospectives we might see of that anniversary could further the narrative that the Obama campaign and Democrats want to tell: that the country is better off from four years ago beginning on Sept. 15, 2008. It’s also an opportunity for third-party validators to talk about the deep hole the country was in from 2008 to early 2009. Now conservatives and critics might use the anniversary to examine TARP’s effectiveness and to make the case that Wall Street is better off than Main Street. But overall, 9/15 advances the narrative of the U.S. economy’s dire shape four years ago.
*** Clinton stumps in Florida: While the presidential candidates are taking a day off from the actual campaign trail, Bill Clinton is hitting the stump for President Obama. Fresh off his well-received convention speech -- a Pew poll finds that a plurality thought it was the highlight of entire Dem convention -- Clinton visits Miami at 4:30 pm ET. And tomorrow, he campaigns in Orlando. Given these appearances in the Sunshine State, don’t be surprised if the former president reprises his Medicare arguments from last week. And take it from a pretty source that Clinton’s campaign activity will occur in these four states (all with older whites or working-class whites): Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, and Ohio.
*** Comparing the ’12 convention ratings with ’08 and ’04: And speaking of the conventions, here’s a look at the Nielsen ratings. The 36 million and 30 million who tuned in, respectively, for Obama’s and Romney’s acceptance speeches is down from four years ago (Obama got 38 million in 2008 and McCain got 39 million). But they are both up from 2004, which might be the more comparable election (Bush got 28 million and Kerry 24 million).

As well we should, every year since the destruction of the twin towers Americans have paid tribute to the victims of 9/11. I imagine this statement of respect will continue for years to come. Perhaps it is time formalize this acknowledgement with a national holiday: A Day of Remembrance.
11 years later and the horror of 9/11 is still so fresh in my mind it seems like only yesterday!
We will never forget...
Meanwhile, Willard is frantically flinging J-E-L-L-O at the walls to see if anything will stick!
Remember, they have already conceded, their campaign will not be dictated by those pesky facts!
Please take some time today to remember the 3,000 victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and their families. We can never forget that day. I will always remember where I was when it was happening on live TV. I have a relative that worked on the 86th floor of one of the towers who was fortunate enough to change jobs in May of 2001 and is alive today just by that good fortune.
11 years ago today United Airlines flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, PA. Those onboard voted. It was a simple up or down vote and not the ten page monstrosity facing Floridians in November. Had the vote on 93 been conducted by Florida, the hijackers may well have reached their intended target. Do them proud Americans, vote this Fall and fight for everyone’s right to do so.
We wander through the ashes of the fallen
Choked not by dust but by tears;
By voices that were theirs.
Voices that said yes to all but fear,
Voices that sang in chorus to action-
With freedom thus we lived
And with freedom thus we died.
With profound thanks to our troops and their families. And enduring support to all those who lost loved ones in the tragic events of September 2001.
The rhetoric became so intense after 9/11, that our family stopped traveling by air and we didn't see certain relatives for years. We didn't feel like playing Russian roulette with our children's lives. Before Bin Laden's demise, we called al Qaeda terrorism the next global terrorism "Hundred Years War". The future looked bleak.
Now that Bin Laden is gone, there's a different feeling.
A trove of data taken from his compound confirmed that Bin Laden was still directing al Qaeda activities. Many more al Qaeda operatives were tracked down using that information, and the world feels safer because of President Obama's courage and conviction.
Postponing the risk, decision and fallout to another president was an option. But our President kept his promise to act, given the opportunity.
Thank you President Obama.

It’s all about full-time pay and lucrative benefits and cushy retirements for a seasonal job which requires 180 work days a year. Compare that against an average full-time worker in the private sector with 3 week’s vacation and 8 paid holidays who works 237 days per year, or 32% more days than a teacher.
It’s also all about a guaranteed job for life if you can survive three years and get tenure. The cost in time and money of getting rid of a bad tenured teacher is so high that very few tenured teachers are ever fired for poor performance. And the Chicago teachers strike is largely about avoiding any teacher accountability through an evaluation system.
And if the Chicago teachers were actually doing a good job, it might all be worth it. But, they’re NOT doing a good job. If you don’t believe me, then listen to what lefty liberal icon, Ezra Klein, had to say about it in his WaPo blog:
And the best part of this strike is there is no “evil Republican” to be demonized. The teachers union’s opposition is none other than Barry’s former Chief of Staff, Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The Chicago teachers' strike is putting President Barack Obama's re-election campaign in a bind, pitting unions loyal to him against officials with ties to the White House.
The Obama camp needs to be careful not to upset the unions , which it needs for campaign funds and to do ground work leading up to the November 6 election, while not alienating independent voters who are worried about the Democrats being too close to powerful labor groups.
While not directly involved, Obama is associated in many minds with local politics in his hometown, where one of his current cabinet members, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, formerly oversaw the schools and now endorses the changes that have angered teachers.
And Mayor Rahm Emanuel is a former Obama chief of staff.
Some 29,000 teachers and support staff are involved in the strike to protest reforms such as performance evaluations for teachers and more authority for school principals.
"They should go back to work. I think it's unbelievable," said a major Obama donor in the Chicago area, worried about the effect the strike will have on Obama's image with the independent voters in swing states he needs to defeat Republican Mitt Romney.
"Every person I know who is a major donor to the president is against the strike decision," the donor said.
But the Obama campaign relies on the Democratic legions of rank-and-file union labor to carry out voter drives in key battleground states, which may be their best chance to overcome well-funded Republican attacks over the airwaves.
Obama is expected to handily win Illinois on Election Day, but he needs union help in closely contested Midwestern states like Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio, where polls show Romney and Obama roughly in lock step.
"The unions are a strong part of the Democratic party and when you alienate the unions then you begin to pull the Democratic dominance of Chicago apart," said Dick Simpson, a political science professor at University of Illinois at Chicago.
Last year for the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 I wrote this piece. I have added a couple of sentences about Afghanistan, yet left the rest intact as I originally wrote it.

Reflections on the Aftermath of September 11, 2001
As we approach the 10th anniversary, I think back to that awful day and what we lost then and during the ensuing ten years and sadly are still losing, vast amounts of treasure and most precious of all, lives of our citizens. Have we learned anything in the past 10 years, anything at all?
I remember that morning and as the enormity of the destruction sunk in, I remember thinking, our lives will never be the same again. Not knowing how change would happen, but certain it would.
We lost some of our freedoms, the carefree way we traveled, especially by air. We lost the openness we had toward strangers, our thoughts of others we don’t know have become suspicious, sometimes wary of their words and or their motives. We have to be very protective of our personal information and with whom we may share it
As a country we lost a lot, apart from the loss of life and treasure, we lost our way in who we used to be. It seems so sad because it could have been better. At first there was that feeling of togetherness, we clung to each other, in our shock, then, we will rebuild and be as strong if not stronger than ever. Other nations, felt our loss and our grief, standing with us, as we had, for so many of them in their hour of need.
Then we were told to go shopping, not to bother our pretty little heads, we will get through this, we will bring the terrorists to justice, we will hunt those that hurt us no matter what it takes. Not matter what it took, we were going to do it, whether the law said it was OK or not. It was stated, you are either with us or you are with the terrorists, no matter what it takes, my way or the highway.
Now, reading excerpts of VP Cheney’s memoir and watching his interviews, it comes back like a bad dream, the invasion of Iraq, for weapons of mass destruction, none were ever found. The loss of life, over four thousand American lives, countless hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. Over a hundred thousand American service people injured there, many of them so seriously they will require ongoing health services for the rest of their lives. For all this and so much more, he has no regrets.
For the first term of the Bush administration, Cheney was, for all intents and purposes the President, he pushed for military action in Iraq. We will be greeted with flowers and cheers he said, as he bulled his agenda through because George Bush was never cut out to be president. Cheney had manipulated himself to be VP, and though his daddy had been President, GWB never had any experience other than the backslapping role of Governor of Texas, the best job in the world, he told Rick Perry his Lt. Governor.
We found that during this time, torture and abuse were done in the name of the People of the United States, the Constitution was trampled on, the moral high ground lost, perhaps forever and the country is now nearly bankrupt. Some even made political careers out of selling fear. We are still in Afghanistan, it is a so very complex situation, we are still losing our troops, Yes, the troops will be home in 2014 and that is good, however the extended cost from the war will be with us for a generation or two as we care for our wounded warriors. Presently the war costs us a billion dollars a week in treasure we now can ill afford, the extended costs of this war, the longest in American history will continue to be a drain on our economy for many years to come.
Out of 9/11 has come the extreme partisanship we see today. The lack of courtesy and respect towards those who are different or do things differently, the lack of unity, the striving towards a common cause, we are all in this together, is no more. M Bin Laden is gone, yet we still fight his followers as we should and we seem to be doing it smarter than before with good results.
Bin Laden succeeded beyond his wildest dreams, he couldn’t have known that the destruction he wrought that awful day, would balloon into a financial disaster too, aided by zealots and nincompoops who didn’t figure how to pay for the wars except put them on a credit card for future generations to pay, in addition, gave tax cuts to the rich to further dig the hole we fell into.
What should have united us, has divided us, and the unscrupulous have taken advantage of it all.

As we remember the victims of 9/11, please take this time to say thank you to President George W. Bush for putting in place the proper tools and techniques that has lead to the "bringing to justice" so many responsible for terrorism around the world. A thank you to President Obama for having the foresight in keeping in place many from the Bush administration and the tools like the Patriot Act to continue the eradication of terrorism.

My daughter is a teacher to the visibly impaired, so I think I'm a little more qualified than YOU are when it comes to her work schedule!
She works 365 days a year 24/7!
If she is not in the classroom she is answering a phone call at 11:00 pm on Christmas Eve from a parent who is having difficulties and needs some reassurance!
After normal working hours, she's on the phone trying to get a student into a special school which would better suit their needs.
She travels to their high school & college graduation on her own dime!
She buys supplies out of her personal budget when the districts won't cover them!
So to the Idiot from Albany, do us all a favor and STFU for a change!

I cannot imagine any real person with so little life of their own they have nothing better to do than post first on so many NBC blogs.
My guess is that she is possibly either a fictional person invented by NBC for employees to use to drum up action on blogs or an actual NBC employee paid to rattle up liberal posters.
While I might thank Bush for providing some of the tools, I won't give Bush any credit for getting bin Ladin beyond that. If we had sent as many troops and focused as much energy on going after bin Ladin, as we did going after Hussein, it's unlikely that bin Ladin would have survived a first Bush term, let alone a second.
It is interviews like that on "Meet the Press" that put Romney in the position of weakness. Gregory basically set the ball on the tee with some of his questions yet Romney was unable to deliver.

I agree that Obama gave the order after several, several urgings from the DD and deserves credit for that. But the same could have been said about the Clinton decision not to kill bin Laden when he had a chance. Maybe 9/11 would never have happened.
Ben, some think the order was political. Had he not allowed seals to go ahead, the info would have leaked out that Obama blew the chance and appear weak and seriously hurt politically.

If anything rings true about the posts of posters like Albany Joe and his fellow whiners it is that they have no grasp of the problems facing teachers.
Bet on this. They've never been to a school board meeting. They haven't spent one minute watching a teacher try to teach a group of students who range in intelligence from very bright to downright stupid. They haven't seen a parent insist that their rude, ignorant child is actually the cream of the crop. They have no clue that parents not only won't, but can't, help their own children with homework.
They don't know how many kids come to school having eaten nothing for breakfast at all or maybe they had some potato chips and a bottle of Mountain Dew. They don't know how many kids don't even live in the homes of their parents.
They don't know that in too many cases a grossly overpaid administrator will back a parent over a teacher. They don't know that most school board members think they're awesome because they look at the budget, but have never been in a classroom.
The reason these people don't know this is because they don't understand education at all. Indeed, they're uneducated. They don't know squat.
Romney, where is this man headed and what's he talking about? And Ryan too. He just repeates everything that Romney says. Is he a parrot? Is he not allowed to express "his" own thoughts? Sure seems that way. Romney will say one thing in the morning, but by the evening he's flip flopped on it again. And Ryan is right behind him to follow up the flip flopped. What are we suppose to believe?
And these liars want to run our Country? I think not.

Since the $21.6 million he took home for doing NOTHING last year means he takes home in a day and a half what they get all year.

Just think if Scott Walker was the Mayor of Chicago, what would they be saying? Well, the absolute first, would obviously be racism. A vast majority of the students our minorities, so it would have to be racism! The president would say something stuipid. Ed Shultz would be telecasting live. But why the silence if their both are Democrats? Hypocrisy?

Please keep it on message by publicly discussing the following:
Your intention to cut education funding, medicare and health care services for all Americans.
Your intention to cut taxes for the wealthiest Americans, against the will of approximately 85% of America.
Your intention to skyrocket the already bloated deficit with increased defense spending while "doing away with" social programs like Planned Parenthood.
Your intention to continue to hide information from the voters such as your tax history, which tax loopholes you claim to want to close for the rich, your plan to reform health care once you destroy Obamacare, your history at Bain Capital between 1999 and 2001 when you were CEO and President and your history as the Governor of Massachusetts.
Your intentions in dealing with Iran, China and our new (self envisioned) "geo-political enemy" Russia, assuming full blown war is NOT your intention... Please clarify.
Your future actions that will create jobs (beyond tax cuts for the wealthy and de-regulation). The whole "I have an economic magic wand" thing doesn't work for most of us and that is why you are losing.
These are important issues you are refusing to talk about. We've heard enough from you about Obama and we know most of what you have to say about him is false. So, lets hear something from you, about you and your intentions.
There is analysis that the bump was the result of energized blues states and not the purple states.
The debates are coming, and these often are the catalyst for who wins.
After you remember 911, then remember this. The job creation statistics are growing. We are going to have a better 4th quarter than in the past 5 years.
Not only are things better than they were 4 years ago, they are getting better and better all the time.
Also remember, that Republicans are trying hard to squelch your vote. Make sure your registered, take people who can't get to the polls by themselves. Obama's edge is on registered voters, not so much with likely voters.
Then also remember, get out your check book and donate to Obama/Biden this week.
American doesn't need another Republican President with "trickle down" economics.

I have several family members who teach school - they put in very long days (a lot longer after the kids go home and they either don't go home or take the work home with them), if our children are our most important resource and legacy then shouldn't the folks we leave them with during the day be qualified, well paid, and successful? I believe they should. I am able to make my living every day because I had a good public education, my children had a good public education (we tried private school for them for a couple of years - not worth the money and they actually learned more in the public school so we went back there), and my grandson is receiveing a very good education in the public schools. Now, why anyone with a college degree + would want to spend their time and resources on another person's children tells me they are better people than quite a few posting on this board and we are quite fortunate indeed they choose to make a lot less money to provide the education our generations need. An educated public translates to an educated workforce which generates good paying long term jobs. I'm not exactly sure what the teachers are asking, I don't live in their state and I don't pay their taxes but I do hope they can work it out. In Tennessee a county not far from the state capital could not open it's doors for 3 weeks after the start date because the Sumner County Tennessee commission would not fund the schools - so that is the other end of the spectrum because Sumner county is a very republican county. So did those folks not care about the children either? Nope, they most certainly did not.

My wife is a teacher; I know first hand the commitment they make for their students. To suggest teaching is a "seasonal job" has to be one of the most ignorant statements I have ever read on First Read. It truly shows how the Right is in favor of the "dumbing of our society". Actually I would like to say thank you to the first responders, the fire fighters, the police and doctors who responded so brilliantly and heroically. Those who were forced to act because of the misteps and mistakes of others. I would thank the CIA and federal agents who tried to sound the alarm and give warnings of the coming attacks. Warnings that in the end were not taken seriously, warnings that were not believed and disregarded.
I lament some of those "techniques and tools" that were put into place as a result of the attacks. I lament because of the terrible horror of that day, the country led by our "leader", drove us to commit torture. The same one who failed to protect us, used the occasion to infringe on our privacy through eavesdropping and wire tapping. The leader who so brazenly started a war not related to 9/11 soon felt it unnecessary to even think about bin laden or attempt to kill or capture him.
w led a trumped up charge to an unneccesary war in a futile search for nonexistant weapons of mass destruction. First and foremost I lament the lives lost on a war of choice and the personal anguish felt by thousands of their loved ones.
On a global scale, I lament that w. set in motion a course of events that led to a futher detioration of the middle east. With the blundering war we lost our blood and treasure while Shi'ite Iran gained a political ally in a newly formed Iraq. Repurcussions continue in Iraq today as the Iraqis continue to fight and kill each other. Further ripples can be seen, today as Syria with its Alawite minority continues to be funded and supported by their Shia allies in Iran. Due to the atrocities commited in Syria, Sunni backed rebels will continue to look to Al Quaida for weapons and help. Once, those terrorists gets more invovled in Syria a full scale blood bath civil war will commence.
Not to disrespect the loss on 9/11 but we should also remember what took place afterwards. We should never forget.

But now it's time to shake the etch-a-sketch and move towards the middle to pick up those independents and undecideds. He can't win the election without them, but any move to the middle will cost him the right of the right wing GOP base. He can't win without them either. He needs every vote.

David, its not about the teachers necessarily themselves, its about teacher's unions, fair pay and benefits in contrast to comparable private industry jobs. My mom and sister are both teachers here in Illinois (although mom is retired) so dont tell me that I dont get it. Given the quality of education and the resistance to education reform from the unions and teachers, what do you think would happen if they just dumped the unions and opened the jobs up for new hires? Do you really think the school systems would have a tough time finding replacements at those compensation levels and they certainly would have no problem doing an equal or better job of actually teaching.

Most of the polls also are using party mixes that give additional democrats surveyed beyond the actual turnout mix of 2008. 2010's Democrat turnout was LOWER than 2008. Removing this slant and the race is still a dead heat.

Ok, you're in a tight spot and you need a game changer. Something dramatic that will convince America you're the right guy for the job.

1. Release ten years of your tax returns.
2. Pledge to bring your millions home to America and pay the taxes on them.
3. Pledge to invest half of your fortune in start-up businesses designed to put Americans back to work.
4. Pledge to end the incentives that keep sending American jobs off-shore.
5. Pledge to close ALL loopholes for the rich and insure they pay a fair tax just like everybody else.
6. Take ownership of the Affordable Health Care act and pledge to support it.
7. Pledge to protect Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security in their current form.
8. Pledge to cut Defense Spending by a mere 10% in-order to pay for these programs.

Interesting that this Chicago teachers' strike occurs at this time. Eleven years ago, the union for my town's teachers made the same, mistaken, decision. This state- this town- lost a tremendous number of people in the attacks- yet, the union leadership decided it was the right time to walk off the job.
Since the back to work order was ignored, a Superior Court judge began jailing teachers for contempt of court. He worked alphabetically, and I knew exactly what would happen- as soon as he got close to the part of the alphabet that would have put the two vice presidents and president behind bars with their peers- those three women declared a breakthrough in negotiations.
They were at exactly the same point as the day they declared a strike.
The other similarity to Chicago? It was all about compensation- they demanded an 18% raise on salaries that were, already, the highest in the state. Although our test scores are vastly superior to Chicago's, it was, and is, incomprehensible that public employee unions refuse to understand that their salaries come from taxpayers- many of whom are already stretched thin.
Ah, well. I understand that, as a result of this strike, Rahm Emmanuel has abandoned plans to fundraise for Obama's SuperPac-just another way this strike will have a negative impact on Obama's campaign.

Let me assure you that Feisty is a real person and not an employee of NBC. My wife and I met Feisty in Chicago a year ago last Spring and I had lunch with her. Whenever I read a comment from someone like Albany Joe that bashes teachers by bashing teacher unions, I am reminded that it was the GOP who began the demonization of teachers in their effort to elilminate unions and collective bargaining rights of all workers. I remember that the GOP has systematically for 30 years slowly starved education through continual budget cuts because doing more with less is a conservative value. I am reminded that according to the GOP we are to blame teachers for the failures of our students just as surely as we are to blame immigrants for our low wages and government as a problem not a solution. Albany Joe and those like him preach villification of teachers via unions because they have been force-fed anti-teacher and anti-union rhetoric and like sheep, they believe, follow, and repeat. IT NEVER OCCURS TO CONSERVATIVES that while blaming teachers and teacher unions for our education failures, these very same anti-tax conservatives have starved the educational institutions and now ask why so many are hungry and dare to blame the educators for the hunger.
After 25 years of not striking, how dare Chicago teachers decide that air conditioning in schools is a necessity for keeping students focused. How dare they ask for smaller class sizes in order to give more attention to those who need it most and on those who need to be challenged. How dare they ask for a 4% pay raise each year over the next four years. How dare they. We pay college football coaches more money than we pay those who educate our children who are our future. We invest more money in football stadiums than we are willing to spend on students and spend to hire and/or reward the best teachers. We subsdize corporate welfare with tax loopholes giving more to profitable businesses like oil companies yet we willingly accept the conservative preaching that teachers and schools need less money not more. Somewhere along the line in the last 30 years, what should be a number one priority--educating children for our future--has become just another demonization tool by the right to starve the beast, make education dysfunctional and thus privatize, privatize, privatize.

They just couldn't decide between the president who ordered the raid and played an important role in planning it, or Mitt Romney, who apparently deserves credit for everything and anything because he has lots of money.
What this poll shows is kind of scary: A majority of Republicans voters, who make up about a third of the electorate, apparently have less intelligence than a stalk of celery.

It is not the childrens' fault, but a teacher will know, and will out of the goodness of their heart often provide supplies that child needed so as to help them not feel different.

As for getting on the first postings, perhaps you are not aware that there are places you can sign up for an early alert to First Read articles, a feature where Newsvine will alert you that they are about to release an article. You can then pre-type your response and save it, then when the headline hits the home page you can call it up and zap the transfer. Only people with nothing but time to waste can do this, because you have to keep refreshing homepage and checking send/receive on your emails. That's what happened today, the early alert is time stamped 06:13PDT (09:13PDT), and you see what time the first few responses went on.
However, it probably won't do you any good, most of those people who sign up, including me, get their emails up to a half hour late. Mine today was 17 minutes after the posting started, so even if I was playing the "early-on" game it wouldn't work. Not one issue on the Teacher's strike in Chicago has to do with improving education for children. It all revolves around their own benefit. They should be held accountable for the dismal production of their students. $76K a year before benefits. Compared to the $40K the average taxpayer makes. And they don't want any accountability to the performance of their students. I am going on a year at my job and am preparing for my performance evaluation so I can hopefully get a raise. I have to set goals and show my employer that I can attain those goals. I don't have to walk in a teacher's shoes, my kids tell me things these teachers do/say in the classrooms that are inappropriate. Sure there are teachers who truly care about their students and want to be a positive influence in their lives. But I am sorry a majority of teachers I have encountered in my 20 years of raising children is nothing to gleam at.

Remembering 9/11. I recall getting up later than usual that morning and turning on the television to watch as I dressed. The first tower had already been hit and at first I thought this was some horrible movie.
I was watching a news anchor when we saw the plane hit the 2nd building. It suddenly became all too real. I remember my knees buckling as I reached for my couch. I sat, numb, watching as first one tower then another fell.
I remember feeling the most helpless I've ever felt - and the angriest. Like most people I went through every emotion that day. Disbelief, anger, unfathomable sadness and grief. And, as the other two planes hit I kept wondering if it was going to end.
I went to my office where everyone was going through the motions of work - then we closed up and went home. I had meetings planned in the heart of the financial district in Chicago - those were cancelled.
Looking back now it seems longer than 11 years - yet it also seems just like yesterday.
I recall all of Congress standing on the Capitol Steps singing God Bless America. I recall a nation that came together and, for short time, forgot our differences.
Today let's remember those who died - not only in the immediate attacks but also those who raced in to save others, then lost their lives themselves.
Today I remember and honor those who died. Today I remember a time I hope we never face again.

my mom was in the union the last time there was a strike and she always said that school strikes not only hurt the kids but the system as a whole, every time there is a strike, the enrollment goes down, parents take there kids out of public and in the private or Catholic or home school.

If a person has 100 million dollars nd he spends 5 million a year in expenses and with tax write-offs and playing in the market he makes 5-6 million a year he hasn't lost any money so therefore no reason to try and make more money, yet if he was getting taxed correctly he will have the desire to start a business to create more $$ and jobs since he is losing money
Chicago has a higher cost of living than most cities. Recently, a friend of mine sold his home there for a million dollars. Here in PA, it would be worth $400,000 to $500,000 tops. Traffic there is a nightmare with Lake Michigan funneling through- traffic between Indiana and Minnesota through the city. Trucks sit for hours waiting to get through this mess. This drives up freight costs and the cost of conveniently located housing.
While students may attend school 180 days per year, teachers have additional in-service days and spend many additional hours at home grading homework and papers. The stress some experience in their school day would be enough to drive some of us non-teachers crazy.
I believe that the fiscal crisis in our education system is partly the result of lower tax revenues and partly inefficiencies in the delivery of teaching services. Students not ready to learn also make it more difficult. Mainstreaming the special needs kids also adds to the cost. Education is the investment we make in our children's future as well as an investment we make in America's future. There are no easy answers. Some charter schools underperform badly. Others do very well, especially those that get to choose the best and the brightest to be their students. Bad behavior, you're out of here.
Pre-school education makes a huge difference in educational outcomes. Head Start and other pre-school programs should be universal. My own kids started a Montessori program at age 3 and considered school work a normal part of their lives. Today, both are successful college graduates, gainfully employed, paying taxes, in their chosen fields.
Yes. Do you? An investment banker makes random investments in various enterprises, hoping that some will pay off more than he or she loses. A monkey could do the same job. There's this idea on Wall Street that somehow being an investment banker means that you are some sort of genius. All it really means is that you managed to get lucky a few times. The whole problem with Wall Street is that it is impossible to distinguish real performance from luck. So lucky people get powerful, and yet still have no clue what to do. So they do random things. Have enough powerful people doing enough random things and you have a recipe for disasters.
That is why our economic system has the problems it does and why we need strict enforcement of our current regulation. These people are idiots, and even worse, they are idiots who think they are geniuses. They don't know what they are doing. The only solution is to treat them like inmates in an asylum and not allow them a lot of freedom.
There is no comparison between the average investment banker and the average teacher. A teacher produces something of value. At best, the total value of investment bankers, if they all behave responsibly, is a zero sum game.
Perhaps because we don't trust the raters? As has often been pointed out, test scores of children are not a valid way to rate teachers, as the same teacher can have wildly varying scores.
If you can come up with a legitimate way to rate teachers, I am sure they teachers themselves would be interested. Go for it.

Just some of the items on their grievance list:
1.They want smaller classrooms so students can get the proper attention to help them learn to the best ability. Right now classrooms can have 35 students and 1 teacher - no assistants. That's a horrible ratio and makes learning difficult.
2.During the hotter months room temperatures have reached over 100 degrees. They are asking that all rooms be air conditioned. Not too much to ask if you want children to be able to learn.
3. They want enough supplies so that all students get books, materials, etc. Again, probably not too much to ask.
4. They want to be able to "police" themselves to weed out teachers who aren't doing the best job.
So, since most of you clearly don't have a clue about what is going on, maybe you should keep your mouths shut, specifically, DON, Kirk, NoJoe, JAS, Ben. You guys make bigger fools of yourselves every day!
The 16% pay increase is over 4 years. The "average" teacher salary in Chicago is NOT $71,000. That's absurd and believe me - the teachers would be thrilled to be making that much.

THough I do blame Bush for his failure to respond to the intelligence--though I think that if he had it might have reduced the chance of the attack by maybe 25%. But he did nothing except go to his ranch.m I don't blame him for the attacks, but I do blame him for not attempting to do anything when he had credible info in front of him in his PDB.
But today I just think of my friends., I have only been down there once since, the sight of tourist buying cheap 9/11 souvenirs made me sick, hearing them bitch that all it was was a hole made me want to scream at them...that is not a hole...that is where three of my friends and thousands of others died. It's very intriguing to see posts citing the inaccuracy and bias of polling data. This from some of the same people who repeat Romney's proven lies. I wonder if you all use the same info sources for this polling bias (undercounting Republicans) that you use for your other false arguments.
Polling has many variables such as the lack of land line telephones among the young and people just not answering the phone. These are best estimates based on models the polling organization uses.
May I point out that it does Democrats no good to be overconfident when polls show their candidate ahead. This overconfidence (which could be the result of a biased poll) can result in some likely Democratic voters just not showing up to vote because of the inconvenience. If it's a close race, they will make the time to vote. Thus, I conclude that it does Democrats no good to introduce bias into a poll. It is not a conspiracy.

The two polls that have been proven the most reliable over the past several elections are Rasmussen and Pew. All others have been less accurate either from over sampling or polling registered voters as opposed to likely voters. The worst is Newsweek, by the way.

Implied in the Washington Post poll is that the level of support for Obama among 'Independent Voters' is poor, with Romney getting about 55% of the Independent Vote vs only 45% for Obama.
With the number of Democratic and Republican voters traditionally about equally split, the Independent Voters are the key to most elections.
By the way - the numbers I quoted are for the Presidential race. In the races for the House and Senate, the Republicans are expected to retain the House, and possibly the Senate as well.
Not a good sign for Obama.

We should be ashamed as a country that some of our elected politicians chose politics over taking care of the brave men and women who selflessly ran into the buildings to save others.
Every single person in Congress who filibustered the 9/11 First Responders Healthcare Bill, should be stripped of their lifetime benefits funded by the taxpayers - especially the coward, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.). I hope he's nowhere near any 9/11 Memorials today because people like him don't deserve to be there.

Reflections on the Aftermath of September 11, 2001
As we approach the 10th anniversary, I think back to that awful day and what we lost then and during the ensuing ten years and sadly are still losing, vast amounts of treasure and most precious of all, lives of our citizens. Have we learned anything in the past 10 years, anything at all?
I remember that morning and as the enormity of the destruction sunk in, I remember thinking, our lives will never be the same again. Not knowing how change would happen, but certain it would.
We lost some of our freedoms, the carefree way we traveled, especially by air. We lost the openness we had toward strangers, our thoughts of others we don’t know have become suspicious, sometimes wary of their words and or their motives. We have to be very protective of our personal information and with whom we may share it
As a country we lost a lot, apart from the loss of life and treasure, we lost our way in who we used to be. It seems so sad because it could have been better. At first there was that feeling of togetherness, we clung to each other, in our shock, then, we will rebuild and be as strong if not stronger than ever. Other nations, felt our loss and our grief, standing with us, as we had, for so many of them in their hour of need.
Then we were told to go shopping, not to bother our pretty little heads, we will get through this, we will bring the terrorists to justice, we will hunt those that hurt us no matter what it takes. Not matter what it took, we were going to do it, whether the law said it was OK or not. It was stated, you are either with us or you are with the terrorists, no matter what it takes, my way or the highway.
Now, reading excerpts of VP Cheney’s memoir and watching his interviews, it comes back like a bad dream, the invasion of Iraq, for weapons of mass destruction, none were ever found. The loss of life, over four thousand American lives, countless hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. Over a hundred thousand American service people injured there, many of them so seriously they will require ongoing health services for the rest of their lives. For all this and so much more, he has no regrets.
For the first term of the Bush administration, Cheney was, for all intents and purposes the President, he pushed for military action in Iraq. We will be greeted with flowers and cheers he said, as he bulled his agenda through because George Bush was never cut out to be president. Cheney had manipulated himself to be VP, and though his daddy had been President, GWB never had any experience other than the backslapping role of Governor of Texas, the best job in the world, he told Rick Perry his Lt. Governor.
We found that during this time, torture and abuse were done in the name of the People of the United States, the Constitution was trampled on, the moral high ground lost, perhaps forever and the country is now nearly bankrupt. Some even made political careers out of selling fear. We are still in Afghanistan, it is a so very complex situation, we are still losing our troops, Yes, the troops will be home in 2014 and that is good, however the extended cost from the war will be with us for a generation or two as we care for our wounded warriors. Presently the war costs us a billion dollars a week in treasure we now can ill afford, the extended costs of this war, the longest in American history will continue to be a drain on our economy for many years to come.
Out of 9/11 has come the extreme partisanship we see today. The lack of courtesy and respect towards those who are different or do things differently, the lack of unity, the striving towards a common cause, we are all in this together, is no more. M Bin Laden is gone, yet we still fight his followers as we should and we seem to be doing it smarter than before with good results.
Bin Laden succeeded beyond his wildest dreams, he couldn’t have known that the destruction he wrought that awful day, would balloon into a financial disaster too, aided by zealots and nincompoops who didn’t figure how to pay for the wars except put them on a credit card for future generations to pay, in addition, gave tax cuts to the rich to further dig the hole we fell into.
What should have united us, has divided us, and the unscrupulous have taken advantage of it all.

It's not so much about the removal of God from the platform (although the vast majority of voters believe that God exists so it's kind of picking an unnecessary fight) the controversy was the fraudulent counting of the votes. Very clearly it was less than a 2/3 majority but it got rammed through because, I guess, that's Democrat's view of democracy.
I really think the issue was less about God and more about Israel, which Democrats hate.

1 - That was the 'spread' in 2008, so they are using that as the basis, but of course the 2010 Mid-term elections should have given them a clue that public support for Obama is seriously eroded since then.
2 - Media Bias - Since studies show that about 90% of reporters tend to support liberal Democrats, we should always use a dose of skepticism when reading stories in the media.

4. Mass' total job growth was just 0.9%, well behind other high-wage, high-skill economies in New York (2.7), California (4.7), and North Carolina (7.6). The national avg was better = 5%
5. Mass suffered the second-largest labor force decline in the nation- only post-Katrina Louisiana had a bigger decline in its labor force than Massachusetts during Romney’s tenure as governor.

The 16% pay increase is over 4 years. The "average" teacher salary in Chicago is NOT $71,000. That's absurd and believe me - the teachers would be thrilled to be making that much.

You are correct, the President proposes a Budget, but it is his responsibility to work with Congress to have an annual budget in place by the due date each year. He has failed to get his Democratic Senate Budget committee to pass a Budget for 3 years now.
The Budget provides an opportunity for the President and the majorities in Congress to lay down ideas on where they believe the nation should go and what new programs and revenue items they propose. It isn't a blueprint for how our government is or should be funded.
These budget committees are tasked with taking the President's Budget and creating their Concurrent Budget Resolution. The legislation they draft is for Congressional use only, it doesn't go to the President to be signed, it isn't a law, it only helps Congress keep to a budget.

I'll start with your comment on jobs. The recent job creation numbers were a serious disappointment at best. While the jobs created number keeps growing as you suggest, it is not growing at the pace that is even needed to break even with the population growth. Last month 96k net new jobs were created when 150k is needed to break even or show modest gains against population growth. The previous two months which were also disappointing and trending down were further revised down by 41k jobs. With this said, how is it that the Obama administration is anything but goats in job creation? While I realize like many others the effects of the market crash and recession would not go away overnight, it appears that the TRILLIONS thrown into the economy have not had any significant effect at all! In fact, the long term problems created by that level of deficit spending have come to far out weigh any possible benefits it might have had. The economy could have righted itself just as quickly if it had been left alone. That is not to say that the economy is headed in the right direction as it stands now!
The situation in Chicago with the teachers strike should tell liberals something about the realities of our education systems. The Illinois teachers' median salary is 74k, the median salary for k-12 teachers across the country is under 50k including special education teachers. The increase in salary originally asked for by the Chicago teachers Union was 20% in the first year and then 5%/ year for the length of the contract. Who said this isn't about money? Our education system is broken and it is teachers, administrators, and parents that are to blame. Teachers are ineffective in school because any disciplinary power they have has been severely limited. Administrators side with parents more often than not, and parents have unrealistic expectations of not only their children's behavior, but on the powers vested in teachers to control what sometimes amounts to not much more than an unruly mob! Children, even good ones, will side with the majority in most peer pressure situations if for nothing else than to be accepted. They are not adults and will opt for pleasurable experiences over work every time if given an opportunity. How many parents can identify with having to remove the game controller or the remote from their child's hand before the homework gets started? The curriculum our schools are trying to teach today is far more advanced than when we were children and the push is to start more complex lessons at an even earlier age to keep up with students in the rest of the modern world! The problem with this approach is that if Johnny or Janie don't know the basics well enough, they are confused or left struggling with more advanced material. As adults we often learn at our own pace and have the persistence to hash on a topic until it has reached the level of required mastery, unfortunately children aren't adults as much as we wish they could be. Rahm Emanuel, democrat though he is, recognized that something other than money levels needs to change in education for our schools to be more competitive in the world and is seeking for a place to start these changes. The strike isn't about money it is about accepting the changes necessary to improve education in Chicago, where the graduation rate is about 60% and the literacy rate of even the graduates is much lower. This is a problem that is not new, but is now coming to a head in the national media. I grew up on the northwest side of Chicago and saw even 40 years ago the vast difference between private and public education.
Teachers often have a thankless job, especially in the inner city schools where poverty and illiteracy are an everyday problem. We should support them in their attempts to teach, but not just through pay increases and reduced work loads. Instead we should be weeding out the teachers who are just collecting a tenured pay check, require accountability of them, and give them the tools to be successful in the classroom. Not just books and supplies, but a curriculum better designed to prepare our children for higher learning and the disciplinary support to maintain a studious environment in the class room.

September 11, 2001 was one of the worst tragedies in our nation's history. It is easy to armchair quarterback and decide who was negligent and who wasn't but that is not really fair to those involved at the time. Intelligence gathering is an uncertain science even in the best of times. Trying to read someones intentions without hard evidence or clear statements is a best guess situation which unfortunately our elected officials must rely on quite often. My thoughts and prayers go out not only to those families directly involved by the attack, but those who still may feel a sense of shame or guilt for asking the question , What If. The president has laid claim to the fact that Bin Laden was killed on his watch, but the efforts that brought us to that day would never have come to be without the resolve shown by congress and President Bush in the months immediately after the Tragedy. The state of our war on terror today is the culmination of a team effort that spans 11 years, two presidents, and several congresses. No one person can claim credit for that effort, and no one person should be fool enough to try.

Since Rasmussen uses a 3 day rolling average, and Obama's lead was 5% yesterday, that means that Obama and Romney are likely tied today at about 45% each.

Bush's proposed 2009 Budget was totally ignored by the Democratic Congress. The only thing signed by Bush for fiscal 2009 was a Continuing Resolution authorizing spending for 2009 at the same level as in 2008. If we can get our economy growing at 3.5% over the next 10 years all those deficit projections go out the window. If Republicans allow a tax increase on the rich, especially investment income, the deficit will close further. If they don't, we should fire them. The top 1% earn 24% of the nation's income, the same as in 1929. This is way more than the 10% the top 1% earned in 1980. Tax cuts for the rich were promised by Republicans over the last 30 years as a way of growing our economy to employ the many in good jobs.
Now, we can see this strategy did not work to produce good jobs in sufficient numbers. Over the last 10 years we have seen overall job growth of a little more than 5 million new jobs, while the rich have stashed away ever increasing amounts of their wealth in investments that do not produce American jobs.
By contrast, Clinton raised taxes on the rich and gave it to the working poor and we saw job growth of 18 million in 7 years and 4 balanced budgets as well. I think this is a strategy we must employ. Remember in 1993, when Republicans said Clinton's strategy would ruin our economy. They were wrong then and they are also wrong now.
Trickle down doesn't work for the 99%. Trickle up does.
I was 18 when Ronnie Raygun proposed Trickle Down and 30 years later I haven't seen any Trickle, only thing that Trickled down from the Top was Seagull Pooh. We cannot afford to Double Down on Trickle Down it doesn't work. I know I was there.

For those who believe that all children in America already have everything they need:
Last night my daughter told me that one of her good friends has just lost her free lunch status because her mom remarried. With 4 children in the house, they can't afford the cost of lunch, and this friend is worried about what they're going to do.
My daughter went on to say that last year another of her friends lost her lunch coverage when her dad got disability payments. That put her family $2 a month over the limit. So for the rest of the year, the child did not eat lunch.
For those who don't understand how this could happen, the guidelines for free lunch require that a family of 4 have income of less than $29,965 a year (gross) to qualify. Think about it - could you feed, clothe, house, provide medical care for and transport four people off less that $2500 a month?
Is this the best the richest country in the world can do? It sickens me that people like Mitt Romney take home $21.6 million a year without even working, and these children go hungry. If we can't at least feed and educate our kids, something is wrong.

Every school district has programs that they either do away with or that comes under attack.
My wife is a teacher at a ( like most all schools) underfunded and over looked.
We always are paying for supplies etc. to help those who cannot afford them.
It is the government in these programs that are the problem.
WE have a program for college tuition call OHLAP. I make 1000 over the income figure and so I have to try and pay for college. The rich politicians just do not realize how hard it is.
Those who are commenting have no idea what it takes to be a teacher or be in the lower middle class and be dollars away from help.

As for Akin, I am not among those who chastised Republicans for calling for him to pull out of the race. They did the right thing. BUT they only did it because they know that he will now lose that Senate seat.
Otherwise, they would have been perfectly happy to pull a Romney.
Romney has vowed repeatedly to "kill"/"completely repeal"/"stop in its tracks" the Affordable Care Act, now the law of the land.
It will not be possible for him to do that and 'keep the parts he likes', that Romney thinks will get him elected.

Later his spokesperson said that only applied to people who have always had insurance, which leaves out anybody who was deemed "un-insurable" prior to Obamacare taking effect - THIS INCLUDES CHILDREN!!!

Ben, can you explain exactly where we were in January, 2009 and the direction we were headed vs where we are today. I can understand your disappointment that the current Republican Congress had not been able to totally mess up the country. However, I cannot understand anyone who is not able to compare the two time periods and say we are worse off now. I also find it a bit disingenuous when anyone criticises the Presidents policies when Congress has not passed any of them. Most of our current problems stem from the fact that during the last two years the Republican Congress wanted to pass abortion bills when we needed job bills. It is not like this is the first recession we have been through.
What happened to insurance rates going down? Mine went up $135.00 a month from last year. My health insurance, (High deductible) is the same as my mortgage payment now. I do like parts, (preventitive care, pre-existing conditions), but I don't see any relief coming my way. BTW I am a small business S-Corporation and along with other regulations and roadblocks my costs are getting out of control.

Plus, we will have a healthier work force.

According to people familiar with Illinois governing, a present vote is quite common and is an accepted way of avoiding a yes or no vote on politically sensitive issues. That leaves 97% of the time that he voted yes or no, almost 3900 times. You cherry pick your info and leave everyone with a mistaken impression or worse that you choose to misconstrue the truth.

Government's role is to balance the needs of America as a united community against the needs of capitalism. Obama inherited a disaster, the worst financial crisis in 80 years, the worst since the Great Depression. Obama inherit the Great Recession, along with two unfunded wars and the unfunded tax cuts of 2001 & 2003, all of which had been adding to the budget deficits and national debt long before Obama took office. Just pointing out the wrecked economy that President Obama was handed when he took office is not blaming the previous administration.
The Great Recession has caused the loss of two trillions dollars in federal revenue. In addition at least two trillion dollars has been spent as a result of the need to counteract the effects of the Great Recession and it's aftermath. Such as the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 02/2009(the stimulus), unemployment insurance extensions, extension of the Bush tax cuts, payroll tax cuts & their extension, increased use of food stamps(SNAP) and so on. The above accounts for more than four trillion dollars of the national debt added since President Obama took office.
Also, we are still fighting one of those unfunded wars and have been for over ten years, including the entire time that Obama has been in office. This is also adding to the national debt.
Obama has not been on a spending binge at all, he has been repairing the disaster he inherited.

None of us could imagine the horror of what happened on 9/11 and I think that extends to our intelligence people--we live in a society where we value our lives; we couldn't fathom peope who like to blow themselves up. That's not true. We think that government should exist to serve the needs of all the people, and where there are problems with that government they should be fixed. You have no idea how hard teachers work and how they care about the children. Sure some of them do it better than others but to lump them all together as you have in such a derisive way is truly ignorant.
While the teacher's union is indeed out of line for going on strike to protest only a 2% increase (among other things), I can't stand it when people denigrate teachers. Like every other profession, there are good and bad, but the profession as a whole is noble, and they definitely deserve everything the school system can pay them.
Public school teachers are the scapegoats of a system that his horribly messed up. They are expected to educate students and are criticized when students fail, but are given relatively little resources to do so, and a whole lot of bureaucratic interference that prevent them from doing their job. They are expected to teach on subjects that have little to do with the basics, and have to prepare students for an exam that is too standardized to really tell much of anything. They are expected to give attention to every student when larger class sizes are making that impossible. They must give up much of their own personal time to ensure that assignments are prepared and graded, so that student progress can be accurately measured. And on top of it all, they are being criticized by parents who refuse to have any input on their children's educational process themselves.
Teaching is an honorable profession, and they deserve to be paid at least as much as the Wall Street fat cats that add nothing to the system but greed, but can collapse the system when they screw up--and get a government bailout when they do.
Michael.....great post. I have worked and volunteered in schools both private and public and can attest to teachers' dedication. To the daily long hours, the after school activities support, the science fairs, resources funded out of their own pockets, along with the pride they feel when an at first difficult student has a breakthrough. Attending graduations for a long ago elementary student, coming to a funeral for a long ago student's parent, these are what make you appreciate the role teachers have in our society. They need our support and deserve it as they truly do make a difference.
Teaching is a honorable profession, I agree! Having been a teacher, I have a little knowledge about what goes on in public education and teacher unions. The majority of teachers work hard and are committed. However, there is a large number of people teaching who should not be in the classroom. The problem I have with the situation is that there is truly no 'evaluation' on teachers to weed out the poor ones. Once you attain tenure, you 'home free'. The teacher union is a joke. The teachers union has only two objectives; (1) collect dues and pay the officials great salaries for doing nothing; and (2) protecting all teachers regardless of their abilities and competency in the classrooom. Want proof...just go to NYC and see the teacher 'rubber rooms' where 100's of teachers who have been identified as failures sit in a room all day, get paid, and are never fired for incomptence. When this situation is corrected; teachers are evaluated on merit, not tenure, and the unions are confined to working for the good teachers then I listen. By the way, how many billions of dollars have been spent on education in this country and look at the results? Money along does not guarantee results!

This was actually true, he had declared his state of primary residence as Utah. He retroactively moved to Massachusetts, filed documents that he and Ann lived in their son's basement. Town records showed that basement to be an unfinished basement....I guess they went back to eating on that old ironing board! In the 1930s there was a stimulus every year except for 37-38 and the economy grew at a 9% rate, but it was still not until 1954 that the average American was back to the level of 1928. The mistake was made by Hoover, not Roosevelt.
With only one stimulus allowed by the republicon congress it's no wonder that the mistakes of bush/cheney have yet to be repaired, and are projected to carry on past 2020. The mistakes belong to bush/cheney and the do nothing house.
So, you expect your leaders (and mechanics) to be able to see the future.
The collapse of 2008 turned out to be much worse than it was expected to be at the time the election was being conducted - at the time of those so-called "campaign promises". What was expected to be about a 3% decline in GDP turned out to be 9% in the fourth quarter of 2008 - after the election was actually held.
It was also expected at that time that in the absence of dramatic changes in government policy, it was likely to trigger the next Great Depression. Notice that didn't happen. It's still a mess but it never reached the depths that were expected.
Notice also that the recession of 1980-82, which was far less severe than this one, and that Reagan inherited and approached using what has now become classic Republican dogma, took over six years for unemployment to recover.
So, given that the collapse was so much worse than expected and the results were so much less catastrophic than expected, exactly what is it you were expecting?

I also do not like the idea of strangers judging my morality or lecturing me about it. I did not vote for Obama last time and am still not sold on him but if I have to vote today it will be for him. What is up with Ryan doing something so childish as lying about his time running the marathon? Good God. How does he expect anyone to take him seriously now?

Obama is not the one who said that his idea of compromise is to get everyone else to agree with him--that was a republican. We've never been this divided as a nation on race, class, religion, or politics since Obama took office. He starts a class warfare to pit citizens against each other? How is that uniting? My post was removed yesterday on pg. 1 so I want to make this observation with all those who jump topic. The private sector has killed wages for 10 years so we begin to look at Unions as the bad guy just like the 99% who hate the 1%, no difference. Envy plain and simple. Union workers have been in steep decline for decades and so many still see them as a threat. Less than, 12% of the workforce in this nation is Union yet the GOP would like to make you think they are the biggest threat to your interest and in reality; it is their threat because they cannot continue to erode the cost of labor with Unions around. Keep worrying about Unions and see what you make in the future. Germany has a robust economy and has an 80% union workforce so what does that say about America and it belief. Greed has driven CEOs to off shore jobs to chase profit to the extreme level. This is just one more case of divide and conquer. Keep buying into the class envy that makes us weaker and weaker and see the quality of Americas lifestyle decline.
