Jeff Gordon, His Mom
Rachael tells four-time NASCAR champ Jeff Gordon that when she went to the Texas Motor Speedway last year, she was surprised at how gentlemanly all the drivers were. "Are you sure you met all the drivers?" he jokes. Jeff said that he and his racing colleagues are amazed by how popular their sport has grown. "I think we all feel so fortunate," he explains. "We never expected to get to that level and have hundreds of thousands of fans out there cheering for us and following us and asking for autographs. I think we're all very appreciative."
Jeff tells Rachael that he's been into racing since he was 5 and a half years old (starting with go-carts and quarter midgets), and that his mom played a key role in developing his skills. "My dad used to take me and my mom to the track," he says, "and he would put her out there [in a car] and have me maneuver around her for practice!"
Jeff is still maneuvering around his mom, but this time it's as her sous chef when they head to Rachael's kitchen to cook a few recipes from her new book, Pit Stop in a Southern Kitchen. Carol Gordon Bickford, who co-wrote the cookbook with another famous driver's mother, Martha Earnhardt, explains that she has something in common with Rachael's cooking style: "I don't measure anything."
