The Parlotones Sign Worldwide Deal With Universal Music

[pressportal.co.za]The Parlotones have become an overnight success (well, after eight years of hard work and dedication at least). The band, which formed in 1998, first garnered public recognition with the release of their first full-length studio album Radiocontrolledrobot. The SAMA award-winning album was released at the end of July 2005 and was received very well by both their fans and the media. The band’s first single ‘Here Comes The Man’ flew up the charts and was promptly followed up with their number one smash hit ‘Colourful’. The band made huge waves when they agreed to close the Coca Cola Massive Mix festival, performing after Metalica. Insane, maybe, but it got people’s attention!
[pressportal.co.za]In May 2006, the Parlotones won The South African Music award for ‘Best Rock Album’. The band became the darlings of SA Indie Rock and have been playing to sold out audiences across the country.

And then … it happened. Sovereign Entertainment received a call from Jon Day of Orange Films in Cape Town. The company was preparing to shoot the new Fuji Film advert for Ireland and the producers were looking for the perfect song. The single ‘Beautiful’ was put forward and immediately accepted as a perfect choice.

Once the first step had been initiated and taken, Raphael Domalik turned to Universal Music (the company that Sovereign Entertainment distributes its artists through in South Africa) for assistance. Mr. Harry Voerman was, as always, eager to assist in the promotion of a South African artist and forwarded the song to the CEO of Universal in Ireland who responded within 2 hours with a “Love the song, lets do it”.

After weeks of anxious waiting, Universal returned with not only a license deal in Ireland but requested for the UK to also be included in the deal. Shortly after the initial deal was proposed, five more countries were added following interest from Universal’s international division. The world-wide deal covers France, Japan, Germany, Holland, Ireland and The UK. The first single, ‘Beautiful’ will be released in all seven territories within the next five months, with other territories to follow.

Due to intense interest in the band from Metropolis Music (one of the top promoters in the UK) the single will be promoted with a UK tour during November.  Described as South Africa’s Crowded House by Metropolis Music Managing Director Paul Hutton, the company became involved in developing the band after they heard their latest award-winning album Radiocontrolledrobot.

Meanwhile, in another part of the world, the editor of one of Germany’s biggest alternative rock radio stations Motor FM (7.5 million listeners) had been sent a little known song titled Silence by a pretty South African girl he had met. He emailed the band to let them know how their music had affected him, offering to submit music for them for play listing on the station he worked for. The single Overexposed has since been play listed and has reached the Gold Playlist, which is the highest rotation the station offers. This is what they had to say:

‘The Parlotones\' music is affecting, meets contemporary international tastes, the singer sets memorable marks and the album shows notable acclaim since it\'s an award winner--yes, I believe there are possibilities to introduce them to Germany.’ Markus Marwil Radio Motorde Germany

Now, with the strength of the world’s largest record label and the support of one of UK’s most successful promoters behind them, a little history making might be in the band’s future.

This deal is a very important milestone for South African music as it marks the first time that a South African rock band has been singled in multiple territories by a major label.
