Cape Breton North voters elected Conservative candidate Cecil Clarke in Tuesday's by-election. Clarke defeated Liberal veteran Wes Stubbert by 453 votes. Provincial NDP leader Helen MacDonald placed third.
"This is not the victory of a party. This is the victory of the people of Cape Breton North," Clarke told a crowd of cheering supporters.
Clarke said he sees his victory as an endorsement of Premier John Hamm's government.
"The Premier does want the voice from Cape Breton that hasn't been there," said Clarke. "It is an endorsement, but ultimately it's one for the area."
Clarke says he'll begin fulfilling his campaign promise to represent his constituents starting Thursday, when the caucus holds its regular weekly meeting.
