ALGIERS, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Algeria expressed concern for the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC), with whom contacts have already been established, local media quoted an diplomatic source as saying on Wednesday.

An Algerian diplomatic source indicated in a statement that Algeria is concerned over the main issues in Libya, including its security, stability and unity, as well as the democratic situation there and the potential repercussions of the situation there on Algeria and the region, local Arabic daily Elkhabar reported.

Algeria is extremely concerned with the democratic future and the unity of Libya, the statement said, adding that Algeria worried about the possibility of dominance of radicals in the country.

Other worries were also mentioned in the statement, including the potential repercussions of the situation there on Algeria and the region, weapons smuggling and the tribal specificity of this country, which could increase probabilities of instability.

The statement added that Algeria will talk about the situation in Libya when the right time comes, taking into account all the variables and making careful analysis of the situation in the country, and its impact on the internal and regional levels, for the sake of security and stability in Libya and the whole region.

The diplomatic source further stressed that Algeria has never supported, politically or militarily, the regime of Muammar Gaddafi since the very beginning of the protest erupted in Benghazi in mid-February.

Algeria has warned several times that the alarming proliferation of weapons in Libya would lead to an escalation of terrorist attacks in the region.
