Musical Inspiration to Open to the Possibilities of Life

Elisha Goldstein, Ph.D. Updated: Sep 20th 2010

woman opening armsI recently heard a touching story of a woman I knew, Stacey, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The moment of her diagnosis a new view of the world washed over her. One day in the spring when she was walking with a friend past a number of clothing shops her friend turned to a window in delight as she said, “I love that sweater, I can’t wait for fall to come.” To which Stacey replied, “Fall, I can’t wait for the next minute to arrive.”

Perhaps our eyes open when we realize our time in this body is limited and we get a bit clearer on how precious the moments of our life really are.

James Mraz wrote a very popular song called "I’m Yours" which was recently adapted by Jan Goldstein, author of The Bride Will Keep Her Name and All That Matters.

He begins by saying “With apologies to James Mraz” because he adapted the lyrics to allow the message of the song to be “Life’s Yours,” reminding us that we can leave our fears and ineffective habits from years past behind and open up to the possibility that life holds for us right now.

Below is James’ song so you can get a hang of the melody.

Here are the lyrics for the unpublished adapted song “Life’s Yours.” If you know the melody of James Mraz’s song, all the better, now sing along.

Well the year is done and you bet I felt it

I tried to be chill but I nearly melted

I fell right through the cracks

Now I'm trying to get back

Before this day runs out

I'll be giving it my bestest

And nothing's going to stop me but divine intervention

I reckon it's again my turn to win some or learn some

I won't hesitate no more, no more

It cannot wait, life’s yours

Well open up your mind and see what there’s to see

Open up your plans and damn you're free

Look into your heart and you'll find love love love love

Listen to the music of the moment people dance and sing

We’re just one big family

And it's our God-forsaken right to be loved love loved love loved

So I won't hesitate no more, no more

It cannot wait I'm sure

There's no need to complicate

Our time is short

This is our fate, life’s yours

I've been spending way too long checking myself in the mirror

And bending over backwards just to try to see me clearer

But my breath fogged up the glass

And so I drew a new face and I laughed

I guess what I'm saying is there ain't no better reason

To rid yourself of vanity and just go with the seasons

It's what we aim to do

Our name is our virtue

But I won't hesitate no more, no more

It cannot wait, life’s yours

Well open up your mind and see like me

Open up your plans and damn you're free

Look into your heart and you'll find that the sky is yours

So I won't hesitate…

life’s yours
