Mylo Xyloto

Let's face it; even if you don't like Coldplay's musical style, nearly everyone agrees they have been one of the biggest bands of the last decade.

I personally thought Parachutes and A Rush Of Blood To The Head were the best of their first three albums. Not such a fan of X and Y but a solid album nevertheless. Viva La Vida and Death To All His Friends was a change in direction, and a better turnout than X and Y but wasn't as consistently brilliant as their first two albums.

When the first single of their new album was released (Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall) I feared that the new album would be a disappointment. However then Paradise was released and my hope to some degree was rekindled.

Before I go on I want to say that you shouldn't judge whether you purchase this album on the strength of the two singles alone as personally I think they are weak compared to the rest of the album.

Mylo Xyloto is a concept album and therefore the songs flow on from one another quite beautifully. If you liked Viva La Vida then you will like this album a little more than those who love classic Coldplay. However, there are a handful of slow ballads which will satisfy the older crowd.

Anyway enough of my rambling; song by song:

Mylo Xyloto: Intoduction and a wonderful taste of the style of the album.
Hurts Like Heaven: Indeed high flying, catchy and well written. 5/5
Paradise: Second single and it does sound a little like Paradise. Not really a highlight though. 4.5/5
Charlie Brown: If there ever was a modern Coldplay classic then this song is it. 5/5

Us Against The World: Change in mood. Sounds like something from Parachutes. 5/5
M.I.X.X.: Basically an introduction to Every Tear Drop Is A Waterfall.
Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall: It's kind of a 'meh' song in my opinion. Too poppy. 3.5/5
Major Minus: Awesome sounding guitar in parts. Reminds me of Violet Hill. 4.5/5

U.F.O.: Very Parachutes/AROBTTH sounding. 5/5
Princess Of China: Very experimental. Almost a hip/hop vibe on top of weak dubstep. I do love the instrumental but would have preferred it without Rihanna. 4.5/5
Up In Flames: Has Parachutes written all over it. 5/5

A Hopeful Transmission: Introduction to Don't Let It Break Your Heart.
Don't Break Your Heart: Liva La Vida esque. Upbeat and colourful. 4.5/5
Up With The Birds: A song of two halves. First half is like AROBTTH. Then a sudden change to a more catchy and really quite beautiful ending. 5/5

Really quite a satisfying listen for any Coldplay fan, old or new. Replaces Parachutes as my second favourite Coldplay album. Colourful, well written and emotion filled sums up the album.
Any fan of alternative music or music in general for that matter should listen to, and purchase Mylo Xyloto.

Wicked!

Coldplay shows us once again why they are so brilliant. Mylo Xyloto is a game changer. It was worth the wait and worth every download, so I recommend it for every old and new Coldplay fan. If you like discovering new music then I recommend "Round and Round" by Buddy Mix on his Cloud 9 album here on itunes. I am looking forward to seeing Coldplay perform these songs live, so hopefully they will come in concert down under soon!

Brilliant!

So the wait is over for Coldplay fans is over: Mylo Xyloto is out.

And in true Coldplay fashion, they've introduced something unique to music today. They have ventured into new territory (sort of) with making a half concept album. Each song fits in perfectly with the next.
The album starts off with the title track, Mylo Xyloto, and although being relatively short, the soary strings and xylophone are a fantastic introduction into the second, Hurts Like Heaven. They have played this live at festival shows this year, so it's not all new stuff to the hardcore fans.
Coldplay have done a fabulous job of throwing everything into the one LP for this. There's the sing-along (Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall), the ballad (Us Against The World), the dubstep style (Princess Of China), the striped-down acoustic (U.F.O), and of course the sure festival hit (Charlie Brown).
Even if you don't usually listen to Coldplay's music, you MUST hear MX.

Does it compare to Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends? Maybe. Will it be huge? You bet.

Biography

Formed: 1998 in London, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After surfacing in 2000 with the breakthrough single "Yellow," Coldplay quickly became one of the biggest bands of the new millennium, honing a mix of introspective Brit-pop and anthemic rock that landed the British quartet a near-permanent residence on record charts worldwide. The group's emergence was perfectly timed; Radiohead had just released the overly cerebral Kid A, while Oasis had ditched two founding members and embraced psychedelic experimentation on Standing on the Shoulder of Giants....
