IN MEMORY OF OUR FALLEN ALS WARRIOR POETS
RIP Jon "Blazeman" Blais August 30, 1971 - May 27, 2007
He Leaves The World A Better Place Because He Was A Part Of It...
Obituary as it appeared in The Porvidence Journal
June 3rd, 2007
BLAIS, JONATHAN S., 35, of Seekonk Massachusetts, known to many as Blazeman, died Sunday, May 27, 2007 in Fort Myers, Florida of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.
A long time triathlete, he moved to San Diego 12 years ago to work with learning disabled and at risk students at the Aseltine School. Jon was diagnosed on May 2, 2005 and in 2 short years he became a powerful voice for ALS, using the sport he loved to help promote awareness and fundraising to find a cure for this horrific disease.
Jonathan was the son of Robert and Mary Ann (Lawson) Blais of Seekonk, brother of Jennifer Murphy, brother-in-law of Jason Murphy and loving uncle of Anna Leah Murphy, all of Ashford, Connecticut. He was the grandson of the late Eugene and Simone Blais and the late James and Catherine Lawson.
Jon graduated from Seekonk High School and Rhode Island College where he majored in special education. Besides his long time participation in triathlons he was an avid mountain climber and hiker and he took his love of the outdoors into his classroom where he inspired many special needs students to reach their potential.
In October 2005, five months after his diagnosis, he became the first ALS patient to race and finish the World Championship Ford Ironman Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii while being filmed by NBC Sports. Last year he returned to Hawaii to watch the race in his wheelchair as triathlete Brian Breen raced on Jon's behalf to continue the cause, finishing as Jon did the year before by rolling across the finish line. Jon was again followed by NBC Sports who won an Emmy for their coverage and dedicated this Emmy to Jon at the Sports Emmy Awards on May 3, 2007.
At the Inaugural Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3 in Clearwater, Florida the World Triathlon Corporation coveted his Ironman race number 179 for special athletes only. In February 2007, Jon was given the Competitor of the Year Award by Competitor Magazine in San Diego.
As he gave so much in his short life, after his death his brain and spinal cord were donated to the University of Maryland Brain and Tissue Bank for research. His body was cremated and his ashes will be spread in special places around the world.
A celebration of his life will be held later this summer. You can find out more about his extraordinary life by visiting his websites www.alswarriorpoet.com and www.waronals.com, where athletes can join Team Blazeman to continue raising awareness and funds for ALS research and support for ALS patients. Donations in his memory can be made to The Jonathan S. Blais (Aka Blazeman) Memorial Scholarship Fund C/O Webster Bank, attn Jan Marshall, 741 Willet Avenue, Riverside , RI 02915 or to the Blazeman Foundation, P.O. Box 19292, Boulder, CO 80308.

Warrior Poet Jim Rebello
REBELLO, JAMES JR., 51, of Pawtucket passed away peacefully at home Saturday, June 23, 2007 after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was the beloved husband of Karen (Carlson) Rebello, for 23 incredible years.
Jim's desire to be involved in his son's lives and activities as father and coach in various youth programs touched not only the lives of his sons but also the lives of many young people. He was involved with Pawtucket Youth Soccer Association for over 12 years as a coach and vice president, Jim was also a coach with the Darlington American Little League.
Jim's strong desire to help others with this disease led him to donate his brain and spinal cord to Massachusetts General to help further research in the fight for a cure for this terrible disease.

Dear Friends,
RIP Jamie Lee.
With mixed emotions to let you know that Jamie Lee died at 5:00 PM...on her birthday. She didn't think she'd make it to see another birthday and how fitting for her to leave today. We are so sad for the empty space she will leave but we are happy for her to be free from pain, to be whole, and free from the dreadful ALS. Please keep her family and her boyfriend, Tim in your prayers.

The Remarkable Story of the Heywood Brothers Has Captured National Attention.
|
|
Sunday, November 27th, 2006 CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – ALS Therapy Development Foundation CEO and d’Arbeloff Founding Director, James Allen Heywood, announces the sudden, accidental death of his brother, Stephen Heywood, 37.
Saturday, November 25, 12:49 PM
Dear Friends,
Friday morning at 5:30 I received the call from Wendy that I have gone to bed each night hoping would never happen. I could tell from the sound of her voice that this one was different. When I arrived, their small street was lit up with the flashing lights of two fire trucks, an ambulance, and a police car. Going inside past Wendy holding Alex in her arms and into his bedroom I found Stephen. His vent had disconnected, his lips were blue and despite aggressive CPR he looked peaceful perhaps with even a slight trace of a smile. I rode to Newton Wellesley with the ambulance driver who also grew up in Newton and remembered Stephen from other visits.
Between Wendy, his caregiver and the EMT's, Stephen had CPR for over 40 min. I don't know if it is because he forgot that he was sick or because his heart is larger and stronger than any I have ever known but it restarted. You could actually see the disbelief on the ER team's faces. You also knew that they were not sure this was a good thing because Stephen's eyes were not responding at all. They wanted to make sure we understood how bad it was but they missed Stephen's point as people often do.
Stephen would tell a joke about wanting to die a heroic death. It went something like this. There would be a fire and he would save someone but it would have be a slow fire with ramps because he would be in a wheelchair. I think he found a way to do that.
There is no blood flow to either hemisphere of his brain and he has no EEG signals. Stephen is gone, left in our hearts and in the relationships and structures he built. Stephen was in command of his world and his body at all times and never lived life on anything other than his own terms. Thursday night before bed he sent an email to Ben saying how wonderful our Thanksgiving was; it was a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Stephen has kept his body alive so that his family and friends could gather and say goodbye. As Stephen indicated he wanted to he will donate his organs to others to give them a chance at the amazing years of life that he gave us. Sometime over the next few days if it is possible some very lucky person will get his heart.
So he found his slow fire and it has ramps.
