Q: What is The New Yorker’s complete online archive?

A: The archive is a page-by-page facsimile of The New Yorker. The current issue is posted first thing Monday morning, before many subscribers and newsstands receive the printed magazine. It also allows you to access every issue back to 1925, and to read and print articles. All you need is a standard Web browser. No plug-ins or special applications are required.

 

Q: How do I register for The New Yorker’s complete online archive?

A: Subscribers to the print magazine can register for archive access at no extra charge. If you’re not a subscriber, sign up for a free four-issue trial. Please note that registering to join the newyorker.com community (so you can comment on blog posts, enter contests, and use other special site features as we add them) is a separate process from registering for access to the archive. Q: What’s the difference between the archive and “The Complete New Yorker” DVD set or hard drive?

A: The archive is updated weekly, but it requires an Internet connection. “The Complete New Yorker” DVD set or hard drive allows you to read back issues up to April, 2008, without an Internet connection. “The Complete New Yorker” can be ordered from The New Yorker Store.

 

Q: If I have “The Complete New Yorker” on DVD or hard drive, can I use the archive?

A: Not necessarily. Access to the complete online archive requires a magazine subscription.

 

 

Registration and Subscription

 

Q: How can I create an account?

A: If you’re a subscriber to the magazine, you can register for digital access. Otherwise, you must subscribe to the magazine, sign up for a free preview (which does not include access to the complete archive), or purchase a single issue.

 

Q: What if I already have a username and password for newyorker.com? Can I use them to access the archive?

A: No. Registering to join the newyorker.com community (so you can comment on blog posts, enter contests, and use other special site features as we add them) is a separate process from registering for access to the archive. You cannot use your newyorker.com username and password to log in to the archive unless you have registered separately for the archive, using the same username and password in each case. You must register in both places if you want access to the archive and to newyorker.com community features. Learn more about The New Yorker and registration.

 

Q: Do I need to subscribe before I can access the archive?

A: If you want access to the archive, you must subscribe. A print subscription comes with access to the archive, or, if you don’t want a hard copy, you may subscribe to the archive alone. You do not need to subscribe in order to buy a single issue.

 

Q: I’m a print subscriber who signed up for the trial version, which has ended. How do I now register for the archive?

A: Print subscribers can register for digital access using their addresses or their ten-digit account numbers.

 

Q: How do I find my account number?

A: Your account number has ten digits and appears on your magazine label.

 

Q: I am a print subscriber who does not live in the United States. How do I register for the archive?

A: Please call +1 (515) 243-3273 during the hours of 8 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. Central Time, Monday through Friday, or send an e-mail. When submitting your request via e-mail, please include the complete mailing address at which you receive your magazine.

 

Q: I’m a print subscriber. Will registering for the archive mean that I no longer receive the print edition?

A: You can register for a print subscription with digital access or for a digital-only subscription. If you’re a current subscriber, registering for digital access will not affect your print subscription. Questions about your print subscription should be directed to 1-800-825-2510.

 

Q: Do I have to be online to read the archive?

A: Yes. You must be online to access the archive. You can print out pages and articles to read offline.

 

Q: Once I purchase an issue, do I own it indefinitely?

A: Single-issue buyers have access to that issue for a year. Subscribers have access to the complete archive for the duration of their current subscription.

 

Q: If I unsubscribe from the weekly e-mail, can I still access the archive?

A: Yes. Unless you cancel your subscription, you can get access at archives.newyorker.com.

 

Q: I accidentally unsubscribed to the weekly e-mail. How do I re-subscribe?

A: Please contact our online customer service so we can reset your account. Please make sure to include the e-mail address you used to register for the archive.

 

Q: I have a subscription, but I can’t access a particular issue. How do I access the issue or article I’m looking for?

A: Register for digital access. If your subscription has expired, you may renew your subscription or purchase access to a single issue.

 

Q: What if my print subscription has expired?

A: You may subscribe again or purchase a digital-only subscription. Both options will give you access to the archive.

 

Q: How do I change my e-mail address?

A: If you are a print subscriber, you must change your registered e-mail address. If you are a digital-only subscriber or a single-issue purchaser, e-mail us at digitaleditionsupport@newyorker.com.

 

Q: What if I register but do not receive a follow-up e-mail with my log-in information?

A: E-mail us at digitaleditionsupport@newyorker.com.

 

Q: How do I give an archive subscription as a gift?

A: E-mail subscription support services at nyrdigital@cdsfulfillment.com.

 

Q: How do I cancel my archive subscription?

A: Please call 1-800-873-8201 to cancel your digital subscription. If you’ve ordered a digital-only archive subscription (i.e., not in conjunction with a print subscription), you will receive a prorated refund for any remaining issues. If you wish to stop receiving the weekly notification e-mails, please click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the e-mail. For questions about your print subscription, call customer service at 1-800-825-2510.

 

Q: Is there customer service by phone?

A: If you want to cancel your subscription, call 1-800-873-8201. If you have questions about your print subscription, call 1-800-825-2510. Please direct other comments and questions to our online customer service.

Q: Can I print an entire issue from the archive?

A: No. You can print more than one page at a time by selecting thumbnail images in the print window. Mac users: Please use Firefox or Safari 3+. At this point, it is not possible to print using earlier versions of Safari.

 

Q: When I try to print a page or an article, I get a two-page spread that’s too small to read. How do I print an article?

A: Start with the “print” button in the black toolbar at the bottom of the archive. When you click that button, you’ll get a panel that shows thumbnail images of every page in the issue. Click on each of the pages you want to print, then hit the gray “print” button. (When you try to print using the browser menu or a keyboard shortcut, you will get a two-page magazine spread on a single page, and it will be too small to read.)

 

Q: Can I send an article to a friend?

A: You can send an e-mail with a link to the article using the e-mail button on the toolbar. The link will point to the two-page spread that you see when you send the e-mail. Your friend will need a subscription in order to read the article.

 

Q: Can I turn pages when I am zoomed in?

A: No. Click on the page to zoom out, then use the arrows to turn the page.

 

Q: How do I search in the archive?

A: The search box in the toolbar of the archive will return three sets of results: Matches in the issue you’re currently reading; matches from our complete issue archive; and optical-character recognition (OCR) results, which will include the text of advertisements as well as articles. (Please note that OCR search is very good but not perfect; those results may contain some mistakes.)

Another way to search across the entire New Yorker archive is to go to the home page and use the search box at the top of the right-hand column, or visit our advanced search page. (When browsing a digital issue, you can get to the home page by clicking on the New Yorker logo at the top of the screen.) These search results will include blog posts and other online-only content such as video and slide shows as well as articles and abstracts from the magazine.

 

Q: Why do I get the message, “You have exceeded the maximum number of computers for this account”?

A: Each account can be accessed from a total of six computers. If you have exceeded this number, please e-mail digitaleditionsupport@newyorker.com to have your account reset.

 

Q: How many computers can I log into at the same time?

A: Each account permits only one user at a time.

 

Q: Why do I have to log in again if I refresh my browser?

A: Cookies must be enabled for the log-in function to work properly. Disabling cookies may result in a log-in prompt every time you refresh your browser.

 

Q: Each time I attempt to navigate to a different page, I'm prompted to log in, and after entering my log-in information multiple times, it tells me that I’ve exceeded the number of log-ins for my account. How can I stop this from happening?

A: If cookies are not enabled on your browser, then your account will not be registered locally and you will be asked to log in multiple times during one session. If you enable cookies on your browser and you still get the “exceeded the number of log-ins” message, please e-mail digitaleditionsupport@newyorker.com so your account can be reset.

 

Q: How do I log out?

A: There is a log-out button in the upper right-hand corner of the archive.

 

Q: I need only one article. Is there a way to get one article without a subscription?

A: If you are not a subscriber, you can buy online access to a single issue for $5.99.

 

Q: Can I select and copy the text from an article?

A: No. The scanned pages do not allow you to select or copy text.

 

Q: Can I download the issues to my computer and read offline?

A: No. The digital archive is only available online, but you can print out multiple pages.

 

Q: Some URLs in the archive are underlined. Are these hyperlinks?

A: Yes. Links in articles and advertisements that are underlined are hyperlinks. These links will open in new tabs or windows, depending on your browser settings.

 

Q: Why do some images not print clearly?

A: The archive prioritizes readability of type. Most images should be readable. For high-resolution prints of cartoons and covers, visit the Cartoon Bank.

 

Q: Why I can’t see the toolbar of the archive?

A: Maximize your browser window to the full size of your screen. Use the button in the upper right of your browser window. On a PC, use the F11 button. On the AOL browser, you will need to open a full-screen.

 

Q: Why is there a page missing?

A: Try to refresh the browser or maximize the window. If that doesn’t work, send a message to customer support.

 

Q: The archive works with which Web browsers?

A: For PC, Mozilla 1.7+, Firefox 1.05+, Internet Explorer 6.0+, Opera 9.0+, and Safari 3+ (release versions only) are supported.

For Mac OS X, Firefox 1.05+ and Safari 3+ are supported. Internet Explorer for Macintosh is not supported.

Beta versions of any browser, including Google Chrome, are not supported.

 

Q: Can I use the archive on my mobile device?

A: The archive is accessible on mobile Safari on your iPhone, but it will be difficult to read. It does not work on the Web browers of most other mobile devices. However, our Web site, newyorker.com, is optimized for a smartphone screen, and will allow you to easily read blog posts and some magazine stories on your phone’s browser.

Q: What’s the best way to read The New Yorker on my iPad?

A: Download our iPad app. Our archive is also optimized for iPad. Registered users will automatically get the iPad-optimized version when they visit archives.newyorker.com on an iPad’s browser. If you already have a print subscription, make sure to register for digital access on a desktop or laptop browser before attempting to access the archive on your iPad.

Q: What should I do if I lose the link to the archive, or if my e-mail didn’t arrive?

A: Please go to the main page of the archive.

 

Q: What should I do if I forget my password?

A: Please go to our log-in panel. You will be asked for your e-mail address, and your password will be e-mailed to you.

 

Q: How do I change my password?

A: Please go to our change-your-password page.

 

Q: One of my digital issues looks bad, or broken. What can I do about it?

A: Please contact our online customer service so that we can fix the problem. Let us know which operating system and Web browser you are using and include the version numbers (e.g., Mac OS 10.4.9; Firefox 3.0.3).

 

Q: Why didn’t I receive my digital issue?

A: Your print subscription may have lapsed. If you’d like to renew or start a new subscription, please call 1-800-825-2510 or use our online customer service.

Your free preview may have expired. If you’d like to continue to access the archive, become a subscriber.

We publish several double issues each year. Look at the cover date on the most recent issue; if there are two dates, you will receive a digital issue the following week.
