The Other Scott Horton (no relation), international human rights lawyer, professor and contributing editor at Harper’s magazine, discusses the one year anniversary of Obama’s broken promise to close Guantanamo; the politicization of terrorism prosecutions, normally the purview of professional prosecutors and not Congress; authorization in the Army Field Manual Appendix M for subjecting prisoners to long-term sensory deprivation; recent court rulings that grant high government officials immunity from prosecution, even for torture, much to the relief of Donald Rumsfeld; how the Gulet Mohamed case casts doubt on the end of “torture by proxy” under Obama; and why the AUMF catchall justification is applicable in the Afghanistan/Pakistan border region but not in Yemen or Somalia.

The other Scott Horton is a Contributing Editor for Harper’s magazine where he writes the No Comment blog. A New York attorney known for his work in emerging markets and international law, especially human rights law and the law of armed conflict, Horton lectures at Columbia Law School. A life-long human rights advocate, Scott served as counsel to Andrei Sakharov and Elena Bonner, among other activists in the former Soviet Union.
He is a co-founder of the American University in Central Asia, and has been involved in some of the most significant foreign investment projects in the Central Eurasian region. Scott recently led a number of studies of abuse issues associated with the conduct of the war on terror for the New York City Bar Association, where he has chaired several committees, including, most recently, the Committee on International Law. He is also a member of the board of the National Institute of Military Justice, the Andrei Sakharov Foundation, the EurasiaGroup and the American Branch of the International Law Association.

John F Kennedy saw the futility of fighting a war 9000 miles away when he issued Presidential memorandum no. 263 for the beginning of the return and pullout of US troops from Viet-Nam in late 1963. He planned to have all troops out by 1965, and when he was assassinated by the right wing conspirators, Johnson reversed the order almost immediately. And we all know the result. 58,000 plus US troops dead for no reason at all. Well, except for corporate profits led by Halliburton, of which Johnson was heavily invested. While Kennedy's body was still warm, President Johnson was heard saying that he was worried about his Halliburton involvement even before he was sworn in. Wake the fuck up Americans and demand the facts be heard. Who profited the most from JFK's murder?
Johnson, Nixon, Bush and Ford. If you care at all about this country, find out why these men became President. It's because they all went along with the plan and coverup. Don't be stupid. Be an informed American citizen. Demand and insist that the true facts be comprehensively revealed at last. Let the word go forth from this time and place that we Americans are tired of the bullshit and just "gimmie some truth" as john Lennon once said.

Well, One might ask, which features of American reality does produce such people as presidents? Liars and deceivers, spin-controlling the population, then that turns into sheeple, then the possibility for the most corrupt and spineless people to become leaders, and indeed treated with fake gravity as the best of the best by people and press?
It is a tradition developed during the occupation of the Phillipines. To register opponents, mingle and spy with them, abusing private informations. Preferring those, that are corruptible. Keep a straight face and swift focus away from vulnerable, and of course illegal doings. It is a true success story of self-deception, subversion, emptiness, posturing, corrupting, which can continue because the majority thinks they are better off and more comfortable, as well as nourishing the idea of being the world's best and brightest and most succesful population of History.

If anyone cares to remember, the early reports on Abu Grabe / Guantanamo disclosed that Mosad was behind all of the staged photos the guards related to these actions. The Mosad agents were referred to as “outside consultants.”
I have always felt that it was the Mosad's goal to have these photos released to incite action and blowback from Arabs. It has always been Israeli / Mosad policy to elicit "retaliation" from Palestinians that would be internationally prorated as "provocation." By distributing these pictures Israeli / Mosad and the Bush Administration could launch a low cost, global terrorist recruiting program.
More terrorist justify the policy of murder and appropriation of rights, land and oil.
